Our Common Identity
An annual May tradition is the college commencement address, a ritual where speakers give young adults quips & short pieces of advice on how to survive in the adult world.
In addressing the graduates of Catholic University, Archbishop José H. Gómez of Los Angeles called those entering the new chapter of their lives to a new era of "American holiness and heroism." Highlighting division in our country, Archbishop Gómez called on graduates to follow the paths of those Saints who have come before us, as diverse as the faces we worship with each Sunday.
As we live our daily lives, how do we act with charity to others? How do we see the face of God in the neighbors & strangers who live among us? How do we work to bring about a more perfect union, to build God's Kingdom here in Washington, DC?
Please consider joining members of St. Matthew's Cathedral parish at these upcoming service opportunities.
"My prayer for you is that you will write a story that is filled with goodness, love & service; with prayer & giving thanks for simple gifts. I pray that you will always seek to know what is right — & have the courage to do it...The American story is not over yet. It continues in you & in me. We can still rely on the protection of divine Providence. We can still open our door with confidence to people who are yearning to breathe free. We can still practice a politics with malice toward none & charity for all. We are made for greater things." - Address of Archbishop José H. Gómez to the graduates of the Catholic University of America, May 12, 2018.
