Continuity Planning Workshop for Community Based Organizations

Community organizations play unique and important roles in disaster response by serving the needs of their clients.  A continuity plan helps you stay up and running when your daily operations are hampered in some way, such as by a power outage, resource shortage, or other impact of an emergency. This free course presents continuity planning in a simple and focused manner, with a one-day training workshop and follow-up technical assistance sessions.

Continuity of Operations Planning (COOP) Made Practical

This course will address key components of a continuity of operations (COOP) plan, including how to identify essential and supporting functions, incorporate vital considerations that ensure the safety and well-being of patients and staff, and protect essential equipment and records. Participants will also learn how a COOP plan can be used as a dynamic tool to ensure minimal disruption to essential services and operations following an incident. Participants will receive a set of tools to use in developing or enhancing COOP plans for their own organizations.

Module III: Hospital-Based Patient Decontamination Operations

May 22 & 23, 2018
Boston, MA

This course has been developed specifically for operational members or managers of hospital-based patient decontamination programs. The course is designed to engage participants in a discussion-based learning environment and consists of eight hours of classroom instruction, followed by a fast-paced, hands-on, eight-hour practical session involving the deployment of patient decontamination equipment.

Hurricane Preparedness Week

 
The week of May 6-12, 2018 is National Hurricane Preparedness Week. The official start of the 2018 hurricane season is June 1 for the Atlantic Ocean. There are a plethora of resources from NOAA, FEMA, and HHS ASPR to learn more about the week and share key messages with others.

Lessons from 2017
As we prepare for the next season, we’ve compiled some lessons learned and other resources in the healthcare sector for response and recovery from the record-breaking 2017 hurricane season:
  • This issue brief from the Kaiser Family Foundation provides an overview of the status of the recovery in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin islands six months after Hurricanes Irma and Maria, with a focus on the health care systems and health needs of residents.
  • This report from HHS ASPR compiles data for approximately 100 Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) units from regions across the country as they engaged in preparedness and response activities including dialysis, patient movement and other ESF-8 support.
  • This infographic from HHS ASPR details 90 days of health response and recovery in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria.
  • This article shares perspectives on healthcare Information technology (IT) challenges faced in Puerto Rico and Florida.

2018 NACCHO Preparedness Summit

 
This year’s NACCHO Preparedness Summit took place in Atlanta from April 17 – 20, where the theme was “Strengthening National Health Security: Mastering Ordinary Responses, Building Resilience for Extraordinary Events.” Our Office of Public Health Preparedness presented four sessions this year; you can find our presentations on the Learning Center and reach out to us if you’d like to learn more.
