Essentials of Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties
The presentation will focus on how children learn to read words and why some children struggle. Understanding the nature of word-level reading development and word-level reading problems will guide both assessment and intervention. Studies consistently show that the most commonly used intervention approaches provide limited benefits for weak readers. However, other studies have shown that some approaches can yield very large reading gains for such students, and these will be described in this presentation.
This is for all grade levels that have students that struggle with reading. If you are asking the question of relevancy because you have secondary students that struggle here is your answer from David Kilpatrick himself, “If you are involved in addressing word-level reading difficulties in struggling secondary students, then the answer is yes. There is no “statute of limitations” on correcting word reading problems, though most schools across the country function as if there is. The reasons a third of fourth grader struggles in word level reading are the same as why tenth and twelfth graders struggle. The most common issue I see is that once kids get out of elementary school, they no longer receive direct attention to improving word reading skills. So if these coaches work in a context in which that can be addressed, then yes, this would be as relevant for them as for elementary coaches.”

Crystal Flash is bringing students from rural schools to visit the GRPM for educational programs by underwriting busing costs!
Rural schools who visit the GRPM between now and December 31, 2018 may be able to be reimbursed for transportation costs. The GRPM offers both self-guided and guided educational programs for schools. Programs provide learners opportunities to explore culture, history and science through guided exhibit explorations and hands-on activities. Guided programs, along with planetarium shows, carousel rides and traveling exhibits are available to students at an additional charge. Stipends are dependent on distance traveled to the Museum and must be approved in advance of visiting.
