BHHS Students Earn Certifications

Brookings-Harbor High School students can take classes and receive valuable certifications in several of career pathway areas, including the Allied Health Certificate, CompTIA Professional Information Technology certificates, and numerous Graphic and Digital Media Art professional software certificates.

Allied Health Certificate

Students who have taken Health Career Pathway classes can earn the Allied Health Certificate in partnership with SWOCC via Ms. Kristy Kleespies classes.

During the 2017-18 school year five students earned the Allied Health Certificate.

This certificate enables them to work in entry-level jobs in medical offices (such as Medical Office Assistant, Clinical Lab Assistant, Home Health Aid) while they pursue further education for future health careers. The Basic Allied Healthcare Pathways Certificate is available free for students that take advantage during their junior and senior year of high school, and applies 5 points toward a SWOCC nursing application or 16 dual credits toward other degrees.

Classes that must be taken to achieve the Allied Health certificate include Intro to Health Care Careers, Medical Terminology I & II, Body Structures & Functions I & II, and Medical Law & Ethics.

Comp TIA Certificates

BHHS students are also earning professional Information Technology certifications from CompTIA, the leading issuer of technical certifications for the IT industry.
Mr. Dane Tippman is the Career Technical Education Teacher whose classes, such as “IT Essentials: PC Hardware & Software” and “Advanced IT: PC Problems & Projects,” prepare students for this skills test.

Students can begin with the entry-level IT Fundamentals Certification, which verifies their knowledge of computer use and repair essentials. Students can then be certified in even more difficult and prestigious certifications in Computer Networking, Cybersecurity and Penetration Testing among others.

Digital Design Certifications

The Graphic and Digital Media Art Program at BHHS, provides modern Career Technical Education skill sets in arts, information and communications technology, digital media, interactive media, animation, special effects, film/video, photography, design, game design and more.

Examples of current BHHS course offerings that include employment and job-ready certification opportunities are Digital Graphics Design, Digital Production and Adobe Dreamweaver and Flash Professional classes.

Mr. Joe Morin, who is retiring this Spring, has built up an impressive certification program in his classroom over the years. This year alone, 20 BHHS students earned training certificates of completion in various industry-standard design programs

Janitor of the Year Contest ends

Local Kalmiopsis Elementary school janitor, Frank Hernandez, was named a finalist for a nationwide Janitor of the Year contest this spring, but ultimately another janitor from the city of Cincinnati, Ohio, prevailed.

“Mr. Frank” was one of 10 finalists competing for a $5,000 cash prize along with $5,000 in Cintas and Rubbermaid products and services for his or her school—not to mention bragging rights.

The community support for Mr. Frank was enormous with posters created by the PTO, T-shirts made and worn by staff and students, numerous TV, radio and newspaper interviews, and support from many local business owners. In total, the contest received more than 446,000 online votes. Voting closed April 20, and Mr. Bob Cook of Sands Montessori earned the most votes to win.

Although, our Mr. Frank was not the ultimate winner. As a finalist, he will receive a $500 check and a Rubbermaid prize package. Mr. Frank did an incredible job representing the Brookings-Harbor School District and our town during the contest, and we are so proud of him for being a finalist in this nationwide contest open to janitors and custodians of educational facilities of all levels—elementary through college.

ASPIRE Program Seeks Mentors for 2018-19 Year

Hello, this is Sean Gallagher  — Superintendent of Brookings-Harbor School District here to talk about the ASPIRE Program at Brookings-Harbor High School and how you can make a difference in the life of a high school student by volunteering as an ASPIRE mentor in the next school year.

Students at Brookings-Harbor High School are in need of adults who are willing to spend a few hours per year providing assistance with planning high school class choices to align with a plan for post secondary education, as well as the process of applying for college and financial aid.

Students benefit greatly when they have the chance to speak with a caring adult who is willing to look at all possibilities for post secondary education. The ASPIRE program welcomes adult mentors with a variety of school and professional experiences. Apprenticeships, technical schools, community colleges, universities and military careers are all options that can be explored depending upon the individual student’s aptitude and interests.

To qualify, potential ASPIRE mentors for the 2018-2019 school year must apply by May 31 and submit to a background check. Training is available online and support is provided in the Bruin Career Center at Brookings-Harbor High School for all mentors.
Are you interested in being a mentor? Contact Cara Dailey in the Bruin Center at the high school. She can be reached via phone at 541-525-2969 or email

Thank you for your continued support to ensure our local schools are a place where “Every Student Can Succeed."
