Collaborative Art Making

On Monday, May 7th, students, faculty, staff, and alumni gathered in Paige Hall to collaborate on an art piece. The event, EDUNIFIED: The Power of Art, was funded by the Inter-Departmental Diversity Development Fund and facilitated by artist Karl Stephan, Art Education alumnus ('15). The goal of this event was to highlight and bring attention to the diverse “voices” in our department through artistic expression. It was a great opportunity to relax and be creative with friends and colleagues. The collaboration will hang in Paige Hall, so next time you are in the department look for the brightly colored canvas and try to see its many layers.

Goodbye, Sabina! We Will Miss You

The Department bids a fond farewell to Sabina Vaught, who is moving to the University of Oklahoma to lead its Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. Professor Vaught has been at Tufts since 2006, and she has made wonderful, transformative contributions to our MA program in Educational Studies, as well as to American Studies, Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Africana Studies, and to the new MA in Diversity and Inclusion Leadership. View photographs from an early May celebration of Professor Vaught. At that event, we heard many wonderful speeches by her former students and colleagues and watched this video tribute by Silas Pinto.

National Memorial For Peace And Justice

The Director of School Psychology, Steve Luz-Alterman, recently visited the opening of the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama. The memorial is dedicated to the more than 4,000 documented victims of racial terror lynchings between 1877 and 1950. Describing the memorial, Steve states, "The structure contains more than 800 rusted steel monuments, one for each county in our country where a racial terror lynching took place. The names of the lynching victims and the dates when these lynchings occurred are engraved on the columns." Read more about Steve's experience.

Tufts/SMFA Art Education Festival

At the end of April, Art Education MAT students put their students' art work on display at the annual Art Education Festival. Art Education faculty and students were delighted to hold the exhibit in their new location at the main SMFA building, 230 The Fenway! The exhibit was held in the Atrium and BAG Galleries, spaces which provided high ceilings and natural light, beautifully and professionally highlighting the MAT students' PK-12 student artwork.

Students And Mentors Gather

On Tuesday, May 8, students, faculty, staff, and supervisors gathered at a reception in honor of the School Partners, Mentors, Supervising Practitioners, and Program Supervisors who work to support Tufts Pre-Service Teachers and School Psychologists. It was a lovely celebration, full of cheer, reflection, and well wishes. Thank you to all who have supported the efforts of our students!

Anti-Racism in Museum Education Workshop

On a recent Saturday, 26 people – current and former students of the Museum Studies Program – gathered to work with Marit Dewhurst and Keonna Hendrick (pictured above, L to R) on cultivating anti-racist practices in Museum Education. Marit is Director of Art Education and Associate Professor of Art and Museum Education at City College of New York. Keonna is the School Programs Manager at the Brooklyn Museum. Keonna and Marit believe, as they wrote in the 2017 introduction to a guest-edited section of the Journal of Museum Education, that “museum educators have a responsibility to interrogate the ways in which racism (often unintentionally) manifests in our interactions with exhibitions, audiences, and colleagues if we wish to create inclusive spaces where multiple identities are valued equitably. Tasked with connecting learners to collections, museum educators can play a pivotal role in dismantling the systems of oppression that operate within art education.”

DACA Fishbowl-Style Discussion

The Education Department Diversity Committee’s Professors Deborah Donahue-Keegan and Silas Pinto organized a continued conversation about ways of supporting educators working to address the diverse needs of students and families affected by DACA in our schools and communities. Educators from K-12 and higher education participated in a “fishbowl-style” discussion while describing their various approaches to this incredibly necessary work. The discussion and follow-up questions focused on the importance of building strong relationships and providing/connecting individuals to currently available, reliable resources. Graduates students and faculty from various departments were also in attendance for the discourse facilitated by Professor Linda Beardsley.

Congratulations, Danielle

Double Jumbo Danielle Alli, MAT '05, a current History and Individual Skill Building Teacher at Charlestown High School, is one of eight teachers selected for the Boston Educator of the Year award. On the award website, Danielle states, “I am inspired knowing that I can help students engage with the world around them at a time when they are becoming adults and making decisions about how they want to contribute to the spaces they live and work in. Realizing that we create the community together inspires me to keep working towards helping students reach their goals and become the leaders and critical thinkers our society needs as we progress into the future.” Congratulations, Danielle!

Congratulations, School Psychology Students

Two School Psychology students, April Valete and Alena Morris, have received scholarship awards from the Massachusetts School Psychology Association’s (MSPA) Diversity Committee. The committee's mission is to "maximize the power of diversity to drive superior School Psychology services and ideals, to reflect the population and socioeconomic circumstances of our clients, to eliminate biases that may be in the workforce, and to embrace and promote a culture that encourages and celebrates differences.”  Congratulations, April and Alena!

On April 27th, members of the Tufts community gathered at Granoff Music Center to celebrate the achievements of graduate faculty and students. SMFA/Tufts MFA Theses Reception

On May 18th, from 7:30-10:00pm, attend the opening reception for the work of 42 graduating Master of Fine Arts students from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. The show, organized and titled by the graduating class, (T)HERE, represents the collapse of "here" and "there" into one unified paradigm. The artists see our globalized world as both "here" and "there" and that the problems of the past are the problems of today. It acknowledges that the contemporary moment is a synthesis of the mainstream and the periphery, theory and experience, history and future. Learn more and see some of the artists' work.

Education Commencement Ceremony!

The department is looking forward to celebrating the achievements of our graduating students at the 2018 Commencement Ceremony.
