Deja Blue 9 had a wonderful turnout of competitors and safety volunteers.  We had deep records being crushed, lots of PB's being challenged. As well as a killer safety team.  A big thanks to the main sponsor Bliss Yoga.  They provided our athletes and safeties with private yoga and mediation sessions.

Meet PFI Freediver Instructor: Jackie Troller

Jackie is located in Oahu Hawaii.  She is a water loving NOAA scientist and part time school teacher.  She has always had a large affinity to be in or near the ocean and wanted to continue her education in water safety.  She knew the PFI education standards were exactly what she was looking for. Check out more on Jackie through the PFI website below!

So You Want to be a Freediving Instructor?

Come join the Best-- Here's How!

If you’ve ever thought of ditching your desk job for a life of underwater.  Or possibly wonder what it could be like to teach your passion for the ocean and diving every week.  If you’re ready to swap those fluorescent office lights for sunlight and warm breezes, consider becoming a certified PFI freedive instructor!  Our next instructor course starts in August (in Apollo Beach Florida) and another will be held in December (in Kona Hawaii)!

If you like to travel, freedive in different locations and environments, and if you like helping others explore their own potential—all while improving your own high capacity freediving—then reserve your spot in the next PFI Freediver Assistant Instructor course and Instructor Exams

Here you will earn your professional freediving credentials.  The instructor course is thorough and challenging, and aimed at fully preparing you to represent yourself and PFI in the freediving world. It’s a step you’ll be glad you took.

Performance Freediving
Every year PFI chooses an organization to donate some of the Deja Blue proceeds to. We are excited to have chosen the Cayman YMCA during the Deja Blue 9. The YMCA is an important part of building communities, helping families, children and adults grow, explore and be healthy and active. PFI is pleased to support healthy lifestyles and physical education for all ages.
AdaptiveTraining

Performance Freediving International understands everyone can enjoy water when given the opportunity.   PFI  has provided an adaptive program for those who have different abilities in the water.  We are open and welcoming to everyone.  PFI knows there are tremendous benefits and healing properties to being in or near water.  Read the interview below with CEO Kirk Krack about how he developed the program.

Freediver Crossover Exam

Because of the amount of certification agencies for freediving PFI has opened a new pathway for friends and family looking to gain the best experience and knowledge but have already taken a course and have been certified.

Intermediate instructors and higher will be able to proctor non-PFI certified students from agencies such as FII, AIDA, SSI, PADI, Apnea Academy etc.  This exams function is to recognize experienced certified freedivers from other agencies may “test-out” of the Intermediate Freediver requirement for courses above IFD, such as Advanced, Safety Freediver, and the Pro-level programs.  We are getting quite a bit of interest from outside PFI, and we are delivering.

The exam consists of a classroom session, going over the Safe Buddy program so they understand PFI’s method of safety, the IFD written exam.  A pool session, testing their abilities in the water including a 3:00 static. Finally, an open water session testing their depth, safety, and self-emergency abilities and techniques.

Maximum depth for the course is 25m.  Minimum age is 16 years, and they must provide proof of certification that meets minimum requirements.  You will be provided with a crossover equivalency spreadsheet.

We have the Freediver Crossover Exam S&P, as well as the Intermediate Freediver Exam to go along.

Safety Check

Keeping up skills and training is important between courses.  Staying in top diving shape can make you a better safety as well as help advance your diving skills.  Every day of diving should be paired with safety skill simulations, both Loss of Moto Control (LMC) and Black Out (BO).  By staying current and prepared on these skills, this can save not only your buddies life but your own!  We suggest running through each drill three times per diver. This engrains muscle memory and helps you to instinctively know how to take action in the case of an emergency.
