This letter is intended to advise you regarding temporary exam and semester average grades that will be reflected on your child’s report card for courses requiring an End-of-Course (EOC) exam, and to serve as a reminder of the Middle School annual and cumulative promotion requirements.
End-of-Course Exams
The state requires standardized EOC exams for M/J Civics and the following high school credit courses: Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology, and U.S. History, or their equivalent. The EOC exam must equal 30% of the semester grade; therefore, final grades cannot be determined until scores are received.
EOC exam results are not expected until the end of June. In an effort to release report cards as scheduled, temporary exam and final semester grades will appear on the report card for EOC courses.
For students who take an EOC exam, the report card will reflect an “E” exam grade and a temporary “P”, “NG”, or “F” semester grade, depending on the student’s quarter grades.
The “P” final grade indicates that the quarter grades meet the minimum criteria to pass the course and the .50 credit will be awarded. However, if a student’s EOC exam is invalidated by the state, the exam and final grade will be replaced with an “NG” and the course credit will be removed.
The “NG” final grade indicates that the quarter grades do not meet the minimum criteria to pass the course; passing the course is contingent upon the EOC results.
The “F” final grade combined with an “E” exam grade indicates that the quarter grades do not meet the minimum criteria to pass the course. The student will need to retake the course to meet the promotion requirements and/or to earn credit. The middle school Extended School Year (ESY) program is available for students who need to recover the M/J Civics course.
If a student does not take the required EOC exam, the report card will reflect an “NG” exam grade and a temporary “NG” or “F” semester grade, depending on the student’s quarter grades. The student should register to take the EOC exam during the ESY July testing session.
Parents will be notified in July when the final semester grades are updated and posted.
Middle School Promotion Requirements
Middle school students must pass language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies to meet annual promotion requirements.
To be promoted to high school, middle school students must successfully complete three middle school or higher level courses in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, including one civics education course; and complete a personalized academic and career plan.
Students who do not pass Algebra 1, but score level three or higher on the Algebra EOC exam meet the requirement for the corresponding course.
Students who pass Algebra 1, but score below level three on the Algebra EOC exam must retake the exam to meet the high school graduation requirement and are strongly encouraged to enroll in the ESY Algebra 1 EOC Prep Program.
The Student Progression Plan on the district’s website provides additional information related to academic requirements and programs.
Online report cards are scheduled to be posted for middle school students on Thursday, June 7, 2018, on the Hillsborough County School District website.
