Around Town:

Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover Returns

The Volvo Ocean Race will mark its second Newport stopover May 8-20. During their last visit in May of 2015, more than 130,000 people visited the Race Village at Fort Adams with an additional 16,000 watching from the water. The visitors contributed an astounding $47.7 million to the Rhode Island economy which is again welcomed and anticipated by Newport businesses and patrons. The Race Village will again be held at Fort Adams and will be free of charge upon entry. All racing can be viewed from the North and West Lawn of the park with other activities taking place inside the Fort. The One Ocean Exploration Zone will be open during Race Village hours and will feature interactive and educational exhibits focusing on marine life, sailing, ocean conservation, weather experiences and marine technology with sustainability as a highlighted component. Also during the Stopover, Sail Newport will offer “Try Sailing!” opportunities for all ages with their fleet of J/22 sailboats and experienced skippers.

Community Spotlight

"Scott Wheeler Day"

Back in 1998 our very own Tree Warden, Scott Wheeler, began what was then called “Newport’s Parks in Bloom” program to help enhance the City’s beauty with spring flowers that would be present in every park. The initial planting of 3,300 bulbs quickly transformed into what is now known as our annual “Daffodil Project.” Within the past 20 years, the Wheeler’s daffodil goal has quickly increased to 867,500 planted daffodils which is a mere 132,500 shy of a million or as we like to call it, a “Daffodillion.” His efforts to highlight and elevate the beauty of Newport has not only been recognized by Mayor Winthrop but also by his fellow residents. April 16 has officially been declared as “Scott Wheeler Day” and we cannot wait to continue to celebrate him amongst the daffodils! Thank you and congratulations, Scott Wheeler.

Neighborhood Focus

Take the Clean Seas Pledge!

Sail Newport and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management are once again serving as dedicated co-hosts for the Volvo Ocean Race and are leading the way to eliminate man made pollution from our waters. They are asking attendees to bike or walk to the races, to properly dispose or recycle their trash and to bring their reusable water bottles. This is in alignment with a continued sustainability theme that was initiated during 2015’s race stopover in Newport. After 23,000 pounds of trash was diverted from entering landfills, influencers from the sport, industry, government and science realms were joined in a discussion about marine pollution and overall ocean health.

Newport’s initiative paved the way for future race locations and it is now a requirement for all 12 stopovers to mimic the sustainability game plan. Stopover organizers are encouraging their attendees, residents, visitors and business owners to sign the “Clean Seas Pledge” with the intent of ridding the ocean of marine litter. Whether you place trash receptacles outside of your business or simply pledge to remove plastic straws from your daily routine, every little behavior change counts. If you’d like to learn more about plastic marine pollution and how you can help protect our waters, this year’s discussion will be held at the Volvo Pavilion on May 18 at Fort Adams. Government 101: Clean Sidewalk Ordinance

An ordinance has been put in place to rid Newport streets, sidewalks and waterways of trash and litter that may decrease the value and aesthetic of the City. We ask that all residents, visitors and businesses be mindful of how they are disposing of their trash and to keep all areas that they encounter clean!
