Tools for Assessing and Managing
Community Trees and Forests
Learn about i-Tree Tools
In this issue:
In addition to South Bend utilizing the National League of Cities grant award to conduct an i-Tree Canopy assessment, as was highlighted in February's newsletter, an i-Tree Eco project was completed. These projects were utilized to assess the extent to which urban forest and other green infrastructure can be developed to help manage stormwater, mitigate urban heat, and improve neighborhood quality.

An analysis of South Bend’s partial park and street tree inventory data was completed using the i-Tree Eco model to assess the relationship of tree structure and tree benefits. The Eco model is a field-based assessment tool used by cities across the world to model the effects of trees and forests using local pollution, weather and other environmental data. Eco generates extensive species specific structural and benefit reports including public health impacts related to air pollution reduction, carbon sequestration, energy effects and detailed hydrology effects. Cities with existing tree inventories can easily import their data into the model for analysis. The Eco analysis showed the significant green infrastructure contributions that South Bend’s oak trees and other large stature trees with greater leaf surface provide compared to smaller trees such as pear and crabapple trees.

In collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service, Project Learning Tree has published a new set of activities designed to engage middle and high school students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) as they calculate the economic and environmental benefits of trees. These three easy-to-do, hands-on lessons accompany i-Tree Designa free online tool developed by the US Forest Service and its partners, to help students discover and analyze the many ecosystem services that trees provide.

i-Tree and STEWMAP Workshop Focuses on Rapid Growth in the Philippines
Secondary cities in the Philippines are experiencing rapid population growth and urbanization which has created significant challenges for city managers to preserve natural resources sustainably while supporting economic expansion and promoting inclusiveness. Representatives from several of these cities attended a workshop to explore an innovative two-tool strategy of applying i-Tree to improve their understanding of the benefits and values of urban trees and forests; and utilizing the Stewardship Mapping and Assessment Project (STEW-MAP) program to identify, map and work more collaboratively with local stewardship groups. Participants were introduced to i-Tree and STEW-MAP and participated in concurrent learning sessions for additional hands-on exploration of urban forestry tools and programs. We look forward to learning about and sharing progress made by urban foresters in Philippine cities as they continue to develop and advance several urban forestry pilot projects utilizing i-Tree Canopy, i-Tree Eco and STEW-MAP.

A Guide to Trees and Stormwater Management
A new online guide, TreesAndStormwater.org, helps connect decision makers from across the nation with resources forintegrating trees into stormwater management design and policy, from initial planning to long-term strategies, budgeting, monitoring, and maintaining. Trees are a valuable part of stormwater infrastructure, mitigating the negative impacts that both wet and dry weather can have on our cities and overall environment while also providing many co-benefits.  The Guide taps into a wide range of resources, with content from NOAA and the EPA, as well as links and guidance on using i-Tree Tools and other models to inform and advocate for trees as part of stormwater management strategies.

i-Tree Eco Features for Users in Mexico

Wednesday, May 23rd @ 1:00 pm EST

Join us for a behind the scenes look at the launch of new Eco features included in the latest software release. We’ll hear from our partners about the importance of expanding these capacities, and how i-Tree users in Mexico will be able to broaden their access to better local information for their canopy initiatives.

The free series is offered by the Urban Natural Resources Institute and is led by members of the i-Tree Team. Sessions typically feature demonstrations, presentations and discussion designed to help participants become familiar with the i-Tree tools and provide a foundation for further learning.

Pre-registration is required to participate in these webinars.
