Acting locally to build Global Innovative Solutions

Google’s exhibition at the CES2018 Show this week, that unveiled the Google Assistant making phone calls to schedule appointments without the people at the other end realising they are speaking to a machine, is truly innovative. It is indeed proof that machine learning and Artificial Intelligence is coming of age. Man and Machines are finally coming together to form the next-generation Social network.
 
Various Technologies have helped to accelerate the confluence of Man and Machines. These include, but not limited to Ubuquitous Connectivity, Widespread Adoption of IP based Networks, Miniaturization, Computing Economics, the rise of Cloud Computing and of course, advances in Data Analytics.

ICANN UPDATE

Implementing ICANN’s Africa Strategy


This is five years since ICANN developed the African Strategy; ICANN's first regional strategy to be developed as a tool for engaging with the continent. ICANN is thankful to the African Internet community for its continuous support of ICANN along with a great spirit of collaboration. In the past five years, the African community's has increased its participation in ICANN.

NiRA 10th AGM Highlights 

The Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) held its 10th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Monday 30th April, 2018 at the NiRA Office Complex, 8 Funsho Williams Avenue, Iponri, Surulere, Lagos. The AGM was well attended by NiRA Members, Stakeholders, Observers and the Press.
 
The primary purpose of the AGM was for the NiRA Executive Board of Directors, to give account of the 2017 activities and the business plan for financial year 2018 of the Association to members and the stakeholders.

AFTLD Workshop in Dakar, Senegal
At the Africa Internet Summit (AIS) at Dakar, Senegal, the Africa Top Level Domain Organization (aFTLD) concluded its workshop program for representatives of country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) Registries in Africa.
 
AFTLD is the association of top level country code domain name (ccTLD) managers in the Africa region with the main objective of helping African ccTLD managers on issues and trends around management of ccTLDs.

.NG Domain Name Active Domains as at 30th April 2018

The growth of .ng domain names is encouraging. For the month of April 2018, the total number of domain names registered (fresh registration and renewals) is 7219 whilst for March 2018, the total domain name registrations (fresh registration and renewals) was 7319. And in comparison, for April 2017, this figure stands at 5855.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Resellers Entrepreneurship Programme
 

Date: Friday 16th May 2018
Venue: NiRA Office Complex,Lagos
 
On Wednesday, the 16th of May 2018, NiRA will conduct another Entrepreneurship Program to educate the General Public on being a .ng domain name reseller. The Reseller Entrepreneurship Program is aimed at developing and training entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs about the Domain Name Industry. The training will also provide insight into the vast opportunities that exist within the Domain Name Industry. This training is conducted free annually and attendance is open to all.
 
The training teaches entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses within the Domain Name Industry with minimum capital; how to run an online business and tap from the vast opportunities in cyberspace. The training will create unique opportunities for participants to network with professionals within the Domain Name Industry.
 
Some NiRA Accredited Registrars would be available to enlighten participants on the rudiments of Registering/selling domain names and on available reseller packages. 
 
This workshop is open to all, who are eager to engage in the DNS Industry. 
2018 Digital Sense Forum on IG4D, IPv6 roundtable
 
Nigeria DigitalSENSE Forum on Internet Governance for Development (IG4D) and Nigeria IPv6 Roundtable has been scheduled for 6th to 7th June 2018.
 
The 2018 NDSF series on Internet Governance for Development (IG4D) and Nigeria IPv6 Roundtable would hold at the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), Cappa, Lagos.
 
The themes for the two-day forum are ‘Internet Governance: Sustaining Development’ on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 and ‘IPv6: Broadening the Horizon’ on Thursday, June 7, 2018.
 
NDSF series is organised and hosted by DigitalSENSE Africa (DSA) Media, an At-Large Structure certified by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA), Nigeria Internet Group, Internet Society, Nigeria chapter and IPv6 Council Nigeria, as well as the Africa Civil Society on the Information Society (ACSIS), among others.

NiRA would host the 2018 .ng Awards on the 6th July 2018 in Lagos. The nominations closed on Monday 30th April 2018. The voting for nominated candidates would commence on Thursday 10th May 2018. We encourage all to participate in all the activities
