City of Niagara Falls 2018 Spring Updates

COMMUNITY CLEAN SWEEP DAY - The Park in the City Committee will be hosting their annual Community Clean Sweep Day on May 12th, 2018 event starting at 9:00 am at the Mick and Angelo’s Kitchen and Bar parking lot. Hundreds of volunteers will take part in collecting litter from various City boulevards, parks, trails and walkways in an effort to make our City a cleaner place. If you would like to attend the event we encourage you to register online. Participants will be provided with safety gear and cleaning supplies as well as a complimentary lunch back at Mick and Angelo’s at the conclusion of the event. The event will proceed rain or shine. This is a great opportunity for businesses to conduct team building activities and for students to acquire their Community Service Hours.
 
CANADA DAY - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Do you want to get involved in one of Niagara Falls' biggest community events? Are you interested in obtaining community hours for High School or to improve your resume? Would you like to meet new people and grow your sense of community? Volunteer July 1st for Canada Day! We encourage you to email Niagara Falls Recreation and Culture Department as soon as possible, if you are interested in getting involved in this Canada Day.
GARAGE SALE AT THE GALE  - VENDORS WANTED! Make a few dollars selling your "goods" while benefiting the Niagara Falls Activity Subsidy Fund. New this year, we are inviting crafters, artists, and vendors selling items such as baked goods, jams, honeys and other local product! $25.00 per parking spot. $40.00 Cube vans. All fees include HST. DEADLINE for vendors applications is Friday, June 1st, 2018. SPOTS are LIMITED. Applications and detailed event information can be found at our website, on our Facebook page, or at MacBain Community Centre and the Gale Centre.
PLAYGROUND RIBBON CUTTING - The City of Niagara Falls invites you to the Opening Celebration for the five neighborhood park playgrounds and one outdoor fitness equipment area! The Playground Ribbon Cutting will be held on June 9th, 2018, at 1:45 pm, and is located at 5522 Prince Edward Ave. Participants are encouraged to join us in the celebration which will include children's bouncy castle, face painting & more! In addition, a photo competition will be held until May 28th, 2018. The competition winners will join the Mayor on a bus as he opens all six locations prior to the 1:45 pm playground celebration that day. BEE CITY -  The City of Niagara Falls will be awarded a designation by Bee City Canada on Friday, June 15. The ceremony will take place at the Fairview Cemetery starting at 1:00pm. Fairview Cemetery is home to Niagara’s only Green Burial site that houses thousands of pollinator wildflowers. Mayor Diodati will be in attendance accepting the designation from Shelly Campbell from Bee City Canada. The public is welcome to attend to learn about the importance of bees and their effect on the environment.

 

RIDE OF SILENCE - Dust off your bicycles and come take part in the annual Ride of Silence bicycle event on Wednesday, May 16th starting at 7:00pm at Fireman's Park. The event is free to all participants and assists in creating awareness about the Share The Road initiative. It honours those in the past who have either been killed or seriously injured while riding a bicycle along our roadways. The ride is 10 km, with all ages who are capable of riding along the road, are welcome. Please remember that helmets are mandatory. Riders are welcome back to Fireman's park after the ride to enjoy a barbeque hosted by The SCVFA.
 

SEED BOMBS - The Schools In Bloom Seed Bomb Event allows for students to learn about pollinators and their effects on our environment. Students will prepare hand-made mud balls that include sunflower seeds. These balls will then be thrown by the students along a prepared ground area at the Fairview Cemetery, where they will germinate and grow into beautiful sunflowers. Sunflowers, like any plant, will photosynthesise and produce plant matter from carbon dioxide and various nutrients.They attract Honeybees and have a long blooming season. Students will learn about the importance of pollinator flowers and how they impact our environment. The event will be led by Renee Delaney from Small Scale Farms on May 23rd, 2018.

JUNE IS RECREATION AND PARKS MONTH - The City of Niagara Falls invites you to join in the celebration of "June is Recreation & Parks Month" by following us on TwitterInstagram and Facebook. We will be launching our social media campaign on May 29th, 2018, continuing ALL JUNE LONG! This campaign is a reminder of the vast amount of activities that can be enjoyed in the Niagara Falls parks and on our trails. Join us as we suggest an "activity a day" that you can participate in at Niagara Falls parks and trails. Follow us online for more details.
SCHOOLS IN BLOOM AWARDS CEREMONY - The Park in the City Committee will celebrate the accomplishments of 14 participating schools in the 2018 Niagara Falls Schools In Bloom Program. Through the support of the Park in the City Committee, the Niagara Parks School of Horticulture and many local sponsors, schools were able to plan and implement various horticulture and environmental projects at their school during the spring season. All projects were student driven and supported by staff and volunteers.The Recognition of Excellence Ceremony is held each year to celebrate the different projects and sponsors involved in the program. The ceremony will be held at Niagara Parks Schools of Horticulture (Niagara River Parkway) on June 14th, 2018. It will include a 3:00 pm Reception, including finger foods and refreshments and a 3:30 pm Recognition Ceremony.
