Ride of Silence: May 16, 2018

On Wednesday May 16th, 2018, The Park in the City Committee will host their 12th annual Ride of Silence bicycle event.  The annual free bicycle ride event encourages all residents to take part and ride in honour of severely injured and fallen cyclists.  You don’t have to be a serious cyclist to participate and all ages are welcome.  You just need a safe bike and a helmet and be comfortable riding along the roadway within our city.  The ride is a slow, procession style, approximately 10 km ride, with all cyclists following the rules of the road.  This year, the ride will start at 7:00pm at Firemen’s Park.  Come early for a free bicycle check compliments of Inception Cyclery.

For further information on this event, please email rc@niagarafalls.ca or call Recreation & Culture at 905-356-7521 ext. 3330.

New Hours at Niagara Falls Public Library

As of April 30th, 2018, the Niagara Falls Public Library has changed its hours of operation across all branches throughout the City to offer more consistency and access to services. The changes come in response to 2017 statistics and feedback from public and staff surveys. The changes include earlier opening times, earlier closing times, and extended summer hours.

Pilot projects will also test extended Friday and Sunday hours at the Community Centre Library throughout May and June, and then again in September and October.  Victoria Avenue Library will test extended Sunday hours from mid-October through December.

What do you think about these changes? Let us know! Your feedback will help determine whether these extra hours and other schedule changes continue in 2019.

For more information and the new schedules, visit my.niagarafallslibrary.ca.
National Public Works Week: May 20 - 26, 2018

We may easily take for granted the vital contributions of public works professionals as we go about our daily lives, even though it would be practically impossible to carry on without them.  Responsible for building, improving and protecting our nation's transportation, water, waste management, and public buildings, assets, and spaces, their dedicated efforts make our communities sustainable and resilient and our lives richer and safer.

This year marks the 58th Annual National Public Works Week sponsored by the Canadian Public Works Association and the American Public Works Association. For more information on the essential services and capital projects delivered by the City's Building, Municipal Works and Transportation departments, please visit niagarafalls.ca.

Public Open House: CN Train Operations Impact Study

The City of Niagara Falls, in partnership with Niagara Region, is undertaking a study of the impact of Canadian National (CN) Railway train operations within the City’s urban boundary. This will include a consideration of impacts on the transportation network, emergency service response, residents, businesses / commerce, environment and safety.

Preliminary recommendations will first explore all feasible opportunities to relocate through freight operations onto other active rail corridors, and secondly by evaluating strategic grade separation candidate sites.

Two public open house events will be held as part of this study. The first Open House was held Thursday April 26, 2018 at the MacBain Community Centre. The second Open House is planned for Thursday, May 31, 2018 to present the preliminary recommendations.

If you cannot attend this meeting but would like further information about this project, please contact the City’s Project Manager, Mathew Bilodeau, at (905) 356-7521 ext. 5204 or mbilodeu@niagarafalls.ca. Alternatively, an online survey is available on the City’s homepage www.niagarafalls.ca. For more information, visit the project page.

72 Hour Emergency Preparedness Guide

In Niagara, we are fortunate to live in a very safe part of Canada; however, no place is immune to the possibility of a large-scale emergency. By being prepared for an emergency, you enable first responders to concentrate on assisting people who are the most vulnerable. If a significant emergency does happen in your neighbourhood, it may take emergency service providers some time to reach you. You should be prepared to take care of yourself and your family for a minimum of 72 hours.

The City of Niagara Falls, in partnership with the Niagara Region, has prepared the Niagara Falls 72 Hour Emergency Preparedness Guide (PDF) to help you become better prepared.
