Bridging the Gap Between 12 Step Groups
and Churches of all Denominations

Happy Birthday Overcomers Outreach

From the Director – On May 9th, 1985, Overcomers Outreach was incorporated under USCFR 501(c)3 as a non-profit ministry, thus allowing Bob and Pauline Bartosch to dedicate themselves to full-time ministry. 33 years later, we continue to humbly serve and support one another as we look to Jesus for our "Higher Power".

Step 5 - Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
“Admit your faults to one another and pray for each other so that you may be healed.”
James 5:16
With God’s help I have discovered a lot about myself, especially where I had been selfish and self-centered. Being honest about myself with another person will confirm that I have been honest with myself and God, while also allowing me to become more willing to take advice and direction from others. My own perception of reality can be a little “blurry” if I don’t share my inventory with someone I trust. Establishing accountability in this way, I determine factually the kind of unjust or injurious treatment I have inflicted on others. The actions I should avoid in the future and the direction I should take to improve my behavior become apparent. My total and complete honesty with another will strengthen my faith, and therefore build up my courage to be free of all of my secrets, fears and egoism.
For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.                                                                                    Romans 10:10
Shame, guilt, and fear of being publicly exposed kept me in hiding far too long. I choose carefully who I am to admit my faults to, but I must choose, for the causes of these feelings must be brought out, and sharing with another is how I do this.I resolve to do what God would have me do to best serve Him and my brothers and sisters alike, so when I choose who I share with, I must be mindful to not cause undue pain or discomfort to that individual. I hold nothing back and get everything out into the light and discover that the past begins to lose power over us, that my burdens are lifted, and I can walk into a new freedom and know new happiness. I begin to feel the nearness of God in new ways, and my faith grows even more.
Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.                                                                   1 Cor. 4:5
It’s in the realm of the heart and spirit that I face difficulty. I know which is right, but do I have the dedicated will to do it? I must have a determined desire to do that which I know is right, if I am to achieve any measurable degree of purity. It has been well said that intelligence is discipline. In other words knowledge means little until it goes into action. Until I translate my knowledge into the action of my own life, the value of it is non-existent. I am not intelligent under such circumstances. So it is with the decency of my life. I know what is right, but unless I do it, the knowledge is a haunting vacuum.
I have looked at my past and discovered where I was wrong in perception and/or action. By talking these things over with someone I trust I have put into practice some basic principles that will help me for a lifetime. I am getting honest with myself about myself. I see what needs to change in me and the way is becoming clear.

 A Prayer of Gratitude
Sometimes it seems easy to get discouraged. It seems to be too much for us. But it is never too much for God. At the top of the list should be that we serve a mighty God, who alone can save us. Best of all, HE ALREADY HAS through His Son, Jesus Christ. To know that we are so blessed to share eternity with such a loving, powerful God should move us to faithful service to others, that we may help them know His Glory. Let's pray:

Father God, we praise you for the opportunities you provide for us to serve you. We ask for open eyes, that we may see your image in those around us, open ears that we may receive your instruction, and open hearts that we may convey your love and mercy to others. May our hearts be humble to receive your providence through others as well, so that all increase is from you, Lord, and may you be glorified in all we do and all we receive in and through your precious Son, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.
Amen
