Reliant Motor Club

The Club for Owners and Enthusiasts of Britain’s finest specialist car manufacturer”

Reliant & Gandini

We are delighted to have recently arranged an interview with Italian car designer Marcello Gandini for the next edition of the Reliant Motor Club Review magazine (No 4 due later this month).  The Motoring Research website states that, "Marcello Gandini is one of the world’s best car designers, responsible for penning some of the most eye-catching, dramatic and important cars of the 20th century". It was during his time with Gruppo Bertone in Italy that Reliant approached the company and Gandini designed both the FW11 (which after failing to replace the Anadol in Turkey or the Scimitar GTE went on, in one form or another, to form the basis of the hugely successful Citroën BX) and Project SE82 which as the name suggest, was destined to be a Scimitar GTE replacement for 1982.  You can read the interview with Gandini in the next Reliant Motor Club Review magazine (No 4).

On the club front, things have been busy behind the scenes and we hope to have news of some potentially exciting projects to share with you in the next edition.  The RMC has been gaining attention and some of you may have heard Elvis on BBC radio last April.  Elvis was invited on the Georgey Tonight show with presenter Georgie Spanswick to talk about Reliant, his books and the RMC.

Whilst we were out last week during a thunderstorm we spied a Scimitar GTE that's local to the area happily going about its business as usual.  It made us smile as unlike some "sunny day only" classic cars,  Reliants are not afraid of a bit of water and they out in all weather conditions.  Hopefully this summer we will see the sun return and things will dry out a bit. In the mean time stay safe and have a great summer.

Best Wishes,

Caroline

Caroline Payne - Secretary
Reliant's SE82 project designed by Marcello Gandini at Gruppo Bertone,  The SE82 was initially designed as a replacement for the Scimitar GTE powered by a Rover V8 engine. Unfortunately despite heavy investment, the project was dropped in favour of a small sports car.
The Royal Wedding
The RMC would like to congratulate the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on their wedding and indeed wishes them all the happiness for the future.

Following the wedding, the Duke and Duchess drove to their wedding reception in a Jaguar E-Type Concept Zero, which is a modern electric version of the 1968 classic.  The car looked fantastic, although here's hoping that by the time Prince George of Cambridge walks down the aisle someone will be creating a modern electric version of another classic - a Reliant Scimitar GTC.   We think the newly wed Royals would look superb in it.

GDPR has landed
Last month GDPR finally kicked in and certainly caused a deluge of emails as many organisations frantically reorganised their data to ensure they were complaint. Thankfully, at the RMC, we tackled this last February.  For those who somehow missed it GDPR is a new set of regulations that replaces the previous Data Protection Act and all companies and organisations that store personal data in one form or another must comply with the new rules.  You can read our GDPR policy here.

RMC on Facebook
In our last Newsletter we announced that we have created an additional page on Facebook that was open to the public (rather than a closed group).  This has been very well received and allows us to share specific news with both members and the public.  You do not need to be a RMC member to join us on Facebook.

Our Facebook page is very active and a great way to communicate with the club so if you have not already done so, pop by and say hello. Please also help to boost our profile by visiting our main site and clicking on "Like"
Tell us your story
Members are aware that the RMC is not just about the vehicles Reliant manufactured but Reliant as a whole capturing its day to day life and indeed gaining information from perhaps Reliant's greatest asset, its former employees.

Since the launch of the RMC we have discovered some fascinating stories from both from our members and former Reliant employees.  If you have a story that you would like to share then please do contact us .
RMC Membership continues to climb
We are humbled at the RMC that the club has been so well received with so many new members and existing members renewing their memberships, many on a 2 year basis. We welcome all our new members and indeed welcome back those who have renewed.  The RMC continues to be global with members in Australia, France, Germany, India, Israel, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey. UK and the USA.

Supporting Reliant Clubs & Historical Organisations
One of the key aims of the RMC is to co-exist and work alongside other clubs and so we feel compelled to also thank the Reliant Sabre and Scimitar Owners Club, the Bug Club and the Kitten Register for all their encouragement and cooperation.  The RMC is also a member of the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs, the Tamworth Heritage Trust and shares resources with the Staffordshire County Council Archives Department.
