Presentation on EC7 to IStructE

Just in case you haven’t seen the advertising put out by IStructE, you may wish to know that our Dr Andy Goodwin is giving a presentation to the Regional Group on 16 May 2018.

Entitled “EC7 Is Just For Geotechnical Engineers – Isn’t It?”, the talk is aimed at de-mystifying EC7 to help structural engineers recognise its implications for them and aid its wider adoption going forward.
It is being held from 6pm in Lecture Theatre 3, The Diamond, 32 Leavygreave Road, Sheffield S3 7RD.  Further details of the talk can be found in the IStructE publicity here.

More CPD Ideas...

Just a couple of CPD ideas for you all this month.  They are especially useful for graduates pursuing professional qualification but may be useful for more experienced colleagues too.

Technical Report Writing - We have given tips on this subject before, but thought bringing another idea forward would not hurt.  Have you heard of the 'Magical Number 7'?  It is a useful guide to help make your technical writing as easy to understand as possible. Psychological research by George Miller has shown that trying to communicate more than seven (plus or minus two) ideas means your readers will have increasing difficulty assembling it all.  It is not an immutable law, but a useful tool to be aware of.  More details can be found in an article by Geoff Hart here, or you can read the original work by George Miller here.

Geotechnical Visualisation -  There are plenty of text books out there describing the derivation and application of geotechnical theories, such as bearing capacity.  We find when delivering our courses that visualising the issues using case studies is very instructive and helps people relate theory to reality.  We are now looking at using YouTube videos to explain issues, and came across this short American video on bearing capacity.  Especially if you learn visually and want to conceptually understand how the ground behaves, it is worth a watch.

We
hope you find the above ideas useful.  More will be forthcoming in future newsletters.
Mock Interviews for ICE Professional Reviews

We are delighted to be running mock interview courses in August for several consultancies, to help their graduates prepare for the Autumn review session.  We are running 'open' sessions too on 7 August and 4 September.   Feedback indicates the sessions are always very useful and well received.  Contact us for details or to book.
