(Read) Experts’ Roundtable: Baseball Sport Administrators
Eye brows raised yesterday on the news that West Virginia & Marshall could receive portions of a reported 0.25% sports gambling integrity fee enacted on outlets taking bets in the state if the Supreme Court ends up allowing states to make their own rules on the highly controversial topic. Overall, it looks like Governor Justice got out over his skis in announcing a deal had been struck. If an agreement does get done, there's the possibility of both institutions receiving more state monies in order to cover additional costs associated with added Compliance & oversight costs to police sports gambling. Oklahoma AD Castiglione gets a total annual compensation bump to $1.55M, ties him with Wisconsin's Alvarez as the highest-paid public school 'Power 5' AD. Outgoing OU Prez Boren: "Joe Castiglione has literally changed the culture of the athletic programs at the University of Oklahoma." There's also retention bonuses of $400K if he's still leading in Norman on June 30, 2020 & another $600K on June 30, 2023. Castiglione: "I’ve never really ever, and will never, think about the success being about me or one single person. Really, it’s the teams that make it happen, it’s the coaches that recruit the best and the brightest, it’s the staff that I have, we all try to work together to work toward the same goal." Also, on the Maryland talk, "I think this response is pretty clear. … As anybody does, I have a great affinity for my alma mater, but one thing I mentioned to President Boren and some of the board members, this has become an alma mater of sorts, too." (link, link, link)
More as the world turns in College Park: Maryland Trustee Attman comments on the AD search, "He’s (Executive AD Evans) a very good candidate. He’s doing a great job as the interim. The process will consider him and other worthy candidates. That’s the only goal of this search — that’s to get the best candidate in the country to work with with us and build on the success we’ve had and to lead us in the future." Attman goes a bit further, indicates UMD Prez Loh is fully in favor of a "robust search." (link); Former Terps MBB HC Williams looks to have taken a swipe at the search committee put together by Loh to aid the AD search process. Williams compared the Maryland group to the Commission on College Basketball, which was selected by the NCAA, "How could you be critical of the NCAA when you pick the people that are going to be on (the committee)?" (link)
CBS Sports' Dodd examines academic benchmarks being looked at by the NCAA Transfer Working Group. The Big 12 is providing the most vociferous opposition to any benchmark, let alone the 3.3 GPA currently being considered for an immediate eligibility transfer, citing the racial inequality of such a standard, as black student-athletes would be eligible to play immediately at a significantly lower clip than all other races. Others, including Iowa State AD Pollard and Saint Joseph's MBB HC Martelli raise the specter of endless waiver requests and litigation, although the NCAA maintains the position would be defensible in court due to overall more freedom in the process. (link)
Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner goes deep on the Pac-12's FY17 picture, the $509.4M in total revenue breaks down into big buckets of $326.1M for TV rights, $113.4M for FB postseason & $35.1M for Mach Madness payouts. $127.9M in income for Pac-12 Networks, which pushed approximately $2.5M to each member institution & Wilner wonders how the Networks spent $98M. Key follow-up questions Wilner sent to the league: Why was conference advertising down by $3M? Why was overall Networks income down by $300K after years of $10M+ increases? Why doesn't all the TV money add up? Response: "What I can tell you is that the consolidated tax return line items often combine results from the Conference and Networks and sometimes use different rules than traditional accounting methods and internal metrics." (link)
MBB-FBI: Sketchers sues Adidas on the grounds of unfair business practices given the alleged backroom payments to the families & middlemen of prospective student-athletes. More specifically, "illicit payments denied competitors like Sketchers who play by the rules a fair opportunity to compete for the cachet of having trend-setting high-school and college athletes seen in their products. […] has been harmed due to increased advertising and marketing costs and lost sales, market share and goodwill." Sketchers wants part of Adidas' profits, compensatory damages & an injunction against Three Stripes. (link)
Oregon State FB will possibly submit a secondary violation for its mailers that ended up on the Hawaii campus addressed to Warriors student-athletes. However, there's still some question on if the intended recipients actually opened the mail, which could have an impact on the filing. Word from an OSU staffer: "We've determined at this point that it was an isolated incident." OregonLive's Canzano: "...so if this is an isolated event and Oregon State operates like a fine-tuned machine, this really just all goes away until Rolovich and Smith coach against each other in 2019." (link)
New ESPN Prez Pitaro sent a review of his first 60 days on the job to all company employees earlier in the week. Of note: "The extraordinary, well-coordinated companywide effort has led to early signs of increased audience reach, usage and engagement – an effective start in achieving a critical goal: expanding the relevance of ESPN to a broader array of sports fans. It’s essential to remember this is not just a one-time project. The ESPN App, which also rolled out to our global audience through our 12 editions, and ESPN+, will both be important elements of our day-to-day business going forward. […] Not only are we the No. 1 digital sports property and No. 1 sports app, but fans choose ESPN first and spend more time with ESPN Digital than the second, third and fourth sports properties combined. […] But we can’t rest. We have to be relentless in serving sports fans, anytime, anywhere. How we serve them – especially younger fans – must continue to evolve and “Life Needs Sports” can serve as a rallying cry for our business going forward." More. (link)

Gonzaga AD Roth back in the news with comments on the process that nearly led the Bulldogs to the Mountain West, "It took a lot longer than the public knows. We really spent a lot of time deciding what was best for us, and we wavered on some things." The Athletic's Bennett works through all the numbers & schedule alterations made by the WCC to paint of picture of why the Bulldogs stayed put. There's also this, "The Bulldogs would have sacrificed years of NCAA Tournament payments earned had they moved to the Mountain West." BYU MBB HC Rose says satisfying the Zags was never a direct conversation in coaches working group meetings that he chaired, but, "We adopted these new rules and the league stayed in place. All that’s a good thing." (link)

Michigan State Interim Prez Engler indicates Interim AD Beekman is doing a "great job," but no decisions have been made on a timeline for a full-time hire. Engler also stands behind MBB HC Izzo & FB HC Dantonio, "I'll put the integrity of these two men and their programs against anyone in the country. [...] I think in Dantonio and Izzo you've got two coaches with great personal integrity who run very clean programs. That is not to say that everybody in those programs has always comported with what's expected of them." More. (link, linklink)
Penn State AD Barbour continues beating the drum as Phase I of her Master Facilities needs $120M to get going. The Nittany Lions have increased annual donations by $6M since 2013 to $30.7M in FY17, but a transformational gift may be needed to launch the facility revamp projects in Happy Valley. Barbour: "You're trying to create excitement. We are meeting with individuals and families and they're all in different stages of the process. […] We've had a lot of change in athletics, relationships take time to solidify and I think that while we're moving slower than any of us wanted to, I don't know that we're moving slower than is realistic." (link)
More Facility Notes: Scroll down to a video tour Marquette MBB student-athletes took last week of the new Bucks arena that they'll call home. Minnesota's Board of Regents amended MBB HC Pitino's contract yesterday to allow him to exceed 40 hours of private aircraft use in one fiscal year to recruit players if "fundraised dollars earmarked for expenses cover the additional costs of chartering flights." Pitino doubled and tripled his allotted charter hours in his first and second seasons with the Gophers. (link); Dartmouth announced last month its fund-raising campaign targeted specifically at female donors, with the goal of raising $1M each from 100 different alumnae. Other schools highlighted, as well, including Duke's Women's Impact Network. Council for Advancement and Support of Education Prez/CEO Cunningham: "It speaks to emerging trends. The wage gap between women and men is closing. Women on average live four years longer than men and are inhering money from their parents and their husbands, so their capacity to give can be significant. In terms of the number of donors, we’re seeing more women giving, and they’re giving more broadly." (link)
Live Nation Entertainment Inc CEO Rapino earned upwards of $70M in 2017, making him the highest-paid CEO among the 1,000 U.S. public companies outside the S&P 500. $58.6M of that figure is in stock awards that vest over five years, making his actual salary closer to $22M. Live Nation, the parent company to Ticketmaster, owns or operates 222 concert venues worldwide. Ticketmaster distributed 500M tix in 29 countries for $2.1B in revenue last year, part of the $10.4B overall revenue of Live Nation. All big money figures aside, Rapino's pay is a byproduct of extreme competition in the entertainment, including sports, marketplace. (link)

As Idaho AD Spear continues his 60-day administrative leave, questions surface on an alleged rape in November of last year involving a Vandals student-athlete. Spear told the student Senate during April discussions, "I can tell you that we have not had in the recent past here any issues with sexual assault." The Idaho Statesman's Cripe works through what's known about the situation, one Spear learned about via an email from Moscow Police Captain Barrett. No charges were filed as a result of the incident as former City Attorney Vowels notes, "In the end, we could not prove that a crime was committed." (link)
New Eastern Washington AD Hickey pens a letter to Eagle fans, noting how proud she is to have the job and sharing her vision for the "unlimited" potential for EWU. Highlights some staff hires, FB scheduling and standout student-athletes and says she will send monthly updates with an "inside view" of the athletic department and a monthly challenge. The first challenge is for fans to purchase season tickets and to consider a contribution to the Eagle Athletic Fund, and to "help us make the retailers in our area aware that we need Eagle merchandise in their stores just like the way they carry Gonzaga and Washington State items." (link)
Former Tennessee AD Hamilton, who now lives in Nashville, reached out to several active ADs in the area to start having a quarterly lunch as a group. Hamilton: "Even though we're going from NAIA Division III to NCAA Division I to Power Five and everything in between, there's some common themes obviously that matter in athletics regardless of level. There's dialogue that develops both in the meetings with each other, but also outside of that meeting with each other. It's nice to have the knowledge of somebody else who understands a little bit about what you do." The group now includes Vanderbilt's Williams, MTSU's Massaro, Belmont's Corley, Lipscomb's Hutcheson, Tennessee State's Phillips, Tennessee Tech's Wilson, Austin Peay's Ivey, Cumberland's Pavan, Trevecca's Elliott, Fisk's Glover, Sewanee's Webb, Martin Methodist's Bain, Western Kentucky's Stewart and UT Chattanooga's Wharton.(link)
FBSchedules' Daughters wonders if "intent" should be a factor that the College Football Playoff Committee considers when evaluating teams. Daughters takes issue with Notre Dame AD Swarbrick's comments a year ago: "Intent is part of what the selection committee looks at. A program might be down by the time you get to it, but when you schedule that game – who were they, what does it say about your intent?" Daughters: "If that’s the case, then every Power 5 athletic director ought to be on the phone dialing up teams who are up presently and will hopefully crash in the next five to ten years. Yes, let’s identify the programs whose success stands on shaky ground – like a coach who is older or who has bigger aspirations, or diminishing recruiting rankings, or potential NCAA violations – and schedule them in the future. ... Intending to schedule the best set of opponents possible is admirable, but it is irrelevant when deciding which four teams have earned the opportunity to compete for a national championship." A bit more analysis on programs that scheduled high-ranking opponents several years in the future, only to face a far inferior team at kickoff. Ohio State FB releases a new video on its 'Brand U' with a number of comments from former & current Buckeyes student-athletes on the important role Asst. Director of Creative Media & Branding Silverman plays in educating on how to best leverage a personal brand on social media. Freshman student-athlete Johnson: "Sammy's presentation to me during the recruiting process about the branding just showed me Ohio State cared more about you than just being a football player and wanted to help you out in life. It was the deciding factor in my decision." Helluva testimonial. (link)
Also Noticed: Five more Ole Miss FB transfers have been ruled eligible immediately. Anderson (transferred to Houston), Nixon (UCF), Street (UAB), DeFoor (Georgia Tech) and Dixon (Nebraska) went through the same revised NCAA waiver process as notable new Wolverine Patterson to become eligible to play in 2018. (link); Montgomery, AL is hosting the Sun Belt's baseball tournament, will it attempt to land the football title game, too? Commish Benson: "We have talked about that. All the reasons that come to mind about the baseball tournament are the same reasons a football championship could be a good fit as well." (link); The NFL will keep a Wild Card playoff game on ESPN. Against the backdrop of bias against working parents when it comes to schedule flexibility, and with the acknowledgement that some non-parents face similar bias because they "have no life," Harvard Business Review provides some guidelines for managers to follow in order to be fair to all parties: 1) In general, more-flexible schedules work better for everyone.; 2) If you have a work-from-home policy, it should be reason-neutral; 3) Ensure that employees can actually use your flexible work policy; 4) Set clear boundaries & procedures for being in touch; 5) Establish trust with your employees and then trust them; 6) Measure outcomes, not process; and, 7) Have policies in place to support your employees.
