Happy Spring!
I love this time of year for the sudden thunderstorms that knock my apple blossoms to the ground in a shower of petals, for my garden smelling of lilac, for the first tastes of green garlic, asparagus, and the baby animals that fill my social media feeds.
In my last letter to you, I talked about the importance of storytelling so I wanted to share with you some of the activity and results from our storytelling on farmer suicide. In Washington State, Governor Inslee signed the bill that goes into effect in June, it forms a task force and funds suicide prevention resources. At the federal level, the STRESS Act was introduced into the House of Representatives and FARMERS FIRST was introduced into the Senate. We need all hands-on deck – please contact your Representatives and Senators, ask them to support the bills. They will provide live-saving assistance and fund mental health resources for our most important natural resource, our nation’s farmers.
While working to get these bills introduced, we also launched a fundraising campaign for our upcoming documentary film, Women’s Work: the untold story of America’s female farmers. We’re proud to announce that we raised $15,607 – thank you! I will be keeping all of our supporters in the loop as to our final amount after fees and expenses. We had our first production meeting to discuss filming this summer and are looking to film a story here in Washington State. So, if you haven’t nominated anyone, please do – here’s the link!
