Please join me in congratulating Dr. Rick Hall, on his being elected Council of the Association for Child Psychoanalysis for the 2018 - 2021 term. Dr. Hall also recently presented a case on the analysis of an 8 year old child at the ACP Meetings in Santa Fe, and will be presenting the same, well-received case in Seattle in November 2018, and once more in Denver next year.

Tribute to Jeremy Safran

Jeremy Safran, 66, was killed in his Brooklyn home. We feel shocked and saddened, and we are close to his wife Jenny and their daughters. Jeremy was a gentle and sensitive man, a friend, and an extraordinary researcher. He taught Psychology at the New School for Social Research in New York and worked as a research director at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York. He has been President of the International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy (IARPP) and has always been an active member of the Society for Psychotherapy Research (SPR). We owe him and Christopher Muran some of the most brilliant intuitions on the therapeutic alliance and on the mechanisms of rupture and repair in the therapeutic relationship. Two of his books are available to the Italian readership: Theory and Practice of the Therapeutic Alliance (Laterza, 2003) and Psychoanalysis and Psychodynamic Therapies (Raffaello Cortina, 2013).

He wrote: “I have never felt comfortable in identifying myself exclusively in a single therapeutic tradition, and my writings show a predilection for straddling the line between various schools and orientations”. Indeed, it was true; Jeremy was able to integrate not only different souls (of researcher, theorist, and clinician), but also different therapeutic approaches (cognitivism, interpersonal theories, and relational psychoanalysis). Jeremy’s pluralism was never a way to dumb down theories and perspectives – it was an attempt to grasp related meanings that had been expressed in different languages. For anyone who reads his work in its historical evolution, one of the things that strikes the most is how clearly the transformation of his thinking come through in his writings. Starting from the long collaboration with Leslie Greenberg in the early Eighties, Jeremy never aimed to integrate different theories because some kind of ideology, but because it was the result of personal, clinical and conceptual research.

For many of us, his research on the processes linked to ruptures and repair in the therapeutic alliance represents the quintessence of his thinking and of his clinical proposal. In his conceptualization, in fact, we find his emphasis on patients’ and therapists’ emotional experience, the interpersonal dimension of his clinical work, and his attention to the here and now in the therapeutic relationship. His work marks the transition towards a dynamic and constructivist conceptualization of the therapeutic alliance. The therapeutic alliance is not a given, nor an a priori requirement. It is a process of ongoing negotiation that in some cases, for example in the treatment of patients with severe personality disorders, can constitute the purpose of the treatment itself.

The conceptualization of the therapeutic alliance proposed by Jeremy (together with Chris Muran) is empirically-based and grounded on task-analytic investigations, a method that allowed the construction of clinical models that describe the different ways in which the alliance breaks down (i.e., withdrawal or confrontation) and the stages that can be usually identified when those are resolved. The meaning of any technical element can therefore be only understood in the relational context in which it emerges, and the technical indications provided by the authors are not standardized manual-type prescriptions, but almost “experiences” lived in the relational frame.

Jeremy was interested in oriental philosophies, Buddhism in particular (among his works, I remember his 2003 book Psychoanalysis and Buddhism: An Unfolding Dialogue). He tried to accept and appreciate things for what they were, not because of passivity (which was utterly out of character for him!), but because he seemed  to want to grasp their essence. He also used to say that, in approaching the patient, it was necessary to have a "beginner’s mind". We will miss him immensely and will always remember his spiritual tension as strong as his empirical passion. [Vittorio Lingiardi]

Psychodynamic Treatment of Eating Disorders: An Integrated Approach

Data indicate that most clinicians use a combination of approaches when they treat eating disorders, and there is empirical support for treatments that incorporate a psychodynamic approach. Comorbidity was associated with longer treatment, and it was the norm rather than the exception: a secondary or personality disorder. Factors such as culture and personality are an often neglected aspect of conceptualization and treatment leading to various problems and have been the focus of Dr. Khademi’s research and clinical work. These issues can be addressed by use of an integrated psychodynamic approach to examine personality, transference, and countertransference with eating disorders. This presentation will review existing empirically supported treatments and end with a clinical discussion of a case.

How Can Psychoanalysis Change Your Life?

Here is what SDPC members say:

"The decision to enter psychoanalytic treatment and training was one of the best I ever made. Thirty years later, the multifaceted world of psychoanalysis remains exceptionally gratifying. I have received invaluable training in developing and maintaining a deepening therapeutic process with a diverse range of patients, enabling me to sustain an emotionally rewarding practice - even in the age of managed care."

"In a larger and relational sense, the psychoanalytic community has been like an extended family for me. A bit like my own small town in which I have made lifelong friends."

"I felt welcomed by each member I met both during classes and events organized by  SDPC. A few members worked with me to understand which program would fit me best."

The Research Conference of the International Psychoanalytical Association was initiated in 1990 by Joseph Sandler, Robert Wallerstein, Otto Kernberg and Peter Fonagy (and others) in London. The aim is to build bridges between clinicians and researchers in psychoanalysis. The conference initially took place in Europe only, but has been rotated through the IPA regions since 2015.

This year, it takes place in Los Angeles and is devoted to a particularly hot topic: Outcome Research and the Future of Psychoanalysis. Leading experts will present overviews of the many outcome studies which already exist, demonstrating the effectiveness of our treatments, and will discuss exciting future perspectives.

The Committee on Gender and Sexuality  of the American Psychoanalytic Association

Announces

2019 RALPH ROUGHTON PAPER AWARD

The Ralph Roughton Paper Award was established in 1998 to honor the founding Chairperson of APsaA’s Committee on Gay and Lesbian Issues.  In its first decade, it offered formal recognition to outstanding published papers that deepened our psychoanalytic understanding of gay men and lesbians.   In 2007, the mission of the Award was changed.  In the years that it is awarded, the Ralph Roughton Paper Award is now given to an unpublished manuscript that, in the opinion of the judges, makes an original and outstanding contribution to the psychoanalytic understanding and/or treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, trans*, or gender-variant people.

The Award carries a cash prize of $1000 and the author of the winning paper will be invited to present it at the National Meeting of the American Psychoanalytic Association in New York on February 8, 2019 . The winner may submit the paper for review by the Journal of American Psychoanalytic Association and, if accepted, it will be published as the winner of the Ralph Roughton Paper Award.

Submission Guidelines
Papers must be unpublished (but may have been presented at professional meetings) and must conform to the Preparation of Manuscript guidelines outlined by the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association with the exception that the length should not exceed 30 double-spaced typed pages. Paper submissions are welcome from anyone regardless of institutional affiliation.  Submissions are due August 31, 2018.  Email one Word document containing the manuscript with all references to the author deleted, and email a second Word document containing the author’s name, email address, address, phone number, and any institutional affiliation to Carol Levin (carol.levin@me.com).

Dear Psychotherapy Training Director and/or Institute Administrator,

As you know from past communications, the Psychotherapist Associates Committee is working to attract more psychodynamically oriented psychotherapists to the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA). We hope to enlist your help for recruiting new Psychotherapist Associates (PA’s) and meeting attendees.

As we look to the 107th Annual Meeting this June 22-24 in Chicago, we are asking you again to inform all current trainees, recent graduates and faculty in your Adult and Child Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Programs about the scientific meetings, the tremendous benefits of attending and the fascinating programs relevant to their work as therapists. We have included a link to a list of selected programs relevant to psychotherapy.  It would be tremendously helpful for you to distribute or forward the attached letter with June meeting links  in order to encourage participation as a Psychotherapist Associate.  We appreciate your reiterating the significantly discounted meeting registration fee and other benefits for Psychotherapist Associates.

We recently became aware that significant numbers of mid-career psychotherapists who completed local  Psychotherapy Training Programs in the last 15 to 20 years are not affiliated with APsaA nor attending the scientific meetings. Many of these psychotherapists may be unaware of APsaA’s Psychotherapist Associates category. We believe reaching out to this constituency could generate substantial interest and involvement in our organization. If your institute or center has a database of Psychotherapy Program graduates dating back 15 to 20 years, we strongly urge you to include them in this outreach effort by forwarding the attached letter.

In addition, we would appreciate your informing people about the Psychotherapy Department’s informal Psychotherapy Networking Lunch in Chicago on Friday, June 22.  We welcome training directors, new and returning Psychotherapist Associates and meeting attendees to this event.  Please note that advance registration closes on May 22.

It’s through your support and engagement that APsaA’s psychoanalytic psychotherapy community grows.  We welcome your ideas for further outreach; look forward to collaborating with you and thank you in advance for your assistance.  Please contact us with any questions or concerns.  We look forward to connecting with you in Chicago!

Warm regards,

Margo P. Goldman M.D.

Save the Date:
8th Triennial Symposium on Psychoanalysis and the Arts
Co-sponsored by APsaA and the IPA
Florence, Italy, May 21_23, 2020.
Theme of Symposium:
Partners in Creation
“In the arts and psychoanalysis, partners in creation experience the perils of rivalry and fusion as well as  the pleasures of intimacy and mutual discovery.”

The planning committee looks forward to the return of well-received presenters from the 2017 Symposium, such as musician, David Rosenmeyer, and art historians David Freedberg, Diane O’Donoghue, and artist Jane Freud. We also expect to welcome additional renowned speakers, such as psychoanalyst and neuroscientist, Mark Solms.

The site of our symposium will be the Convitto Della Calza, a 16th century architectural masterpiece adorned with magnificent frescos; it has been reborn as a 21st century conference venue, with state-of-the art audio-visual systems.  Individual microphones at each seat will allow attendees to join post-lecture discussions with ease. Two coffee breaks per day (with Italian delicacies) will facilitate further sharing of ideas.

Once again, we will offer tours of the attractions of Florence, a city that is, itself, a living museum, the grandest realization of the high Renaissance, updated but intact, within a setting of inspiring beauty.

Periodically, we will send progress reports on our plans for the 2020 symposium and when the date draws near, we will share detailed information about hotel accommodations and registration. To join the mailing list, email us at partnersincreation2020@gmail.com
