“All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.”
— Abraham Lincoln

This Mother’s day as we reflect on that powerful quote from Abraham Lincoln and relate to how our mothers have positively influenced who we are and who we hope to be, let’s take the time to celebrate the powerful change-agent in our lives… Mom, Amma, Maa.  Happy Mother’s Day!

At Asha for Education we take a holistic approach to drive socio-economic change in India through the education of underprivileged children. We recognize that to change the next generation, to break the vicious cycle of poverty, we must focus on two generations: mother and child. That’s why we passionately fund projects that foster that cycle of transformation.

Take the example of Aarti Home, one of the projects that we proudly sponsor. The kids in this school are either orphans or come from extremely under-privileged backgrounds. Mrs. Sandhya Puchalapalli, founder of Aarti Home, is like a mother to all the kids at Aarti Home.

Reshma (shown in the right picture) achieved the highest academic performance at school.  In addition, Aarti English Medium school achieved a 100% pass result, third year in a row!! Kudos to Mrs. Sandhya Puchalapalli for making a tangible difference in the lives of these children.
Thanks to your support and generous contributions, Asha for Education Seattle chapter has disbursed each year ~1M towards transformational projects like Aarti Home.
Our volunteers are committed to creating awareness and driving socio-economic change in India through the education of underprivileged children. To continue to support projects like Aarti Home and take on additional transformational projects we engaged in awareness and fund-raising events. Orchestra has raised over $300K for "Asha for Education" during the past 16 years.

Geetanjali
Geetanjali is our signature musical event performed by Geetanjali Tamil Music band celebrating South Indian cinema songs and music.  Year after year the band has been performing to support Asha for Education and has been well-received by the Seattle area audience. Geetanjali Orchestra has raised over $300K for "Asha for Education" during the past 16 years.
Geetanjali 2018 was held at Kane hall in Seattle on Saturday March 31st 2018 and was a blast!  It was a sold-out show with memorable performances.  A lot of work into the band practice sessions, coordinating the children's orchestra. Several Asha volunteers helped in preparing the Asha presentation, packing the food, publicity, ticketing, and much more.  More information on the band and highlights of the show are available on #geetanjalitamilband Facebook page. Thank you Geetanjali TamilBand and Asha volunteers!!

Junior Asha Seattle
Junior Asha (JA) is the youth wing of Asha for Education – Seattle Chapter where kids (12-18 years old) participate in local events, spread awareness about Asha and raised funds.

On March 24th Nayha, Shrutika, Mehak and Arjun from JA participated in the Teen Action event at Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and held a booth to showcase the work of Asha and Junior Asha using the example of Adruta Children’s Home.  Keeping with the theme of the event – Empathy, the JA team engaged the audience by quizzing them with questions such as “What percentage of people are homeless in India?” Many people realized that their numbers were way off and that the situation of the underprivileged was worse than they had imagined.
Another event was the Big Climb for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) on March 25th.  10 Junior Asha teens volunteered for the event with the help of Junior Asha mentors Archana Mehta and Dheepa Ramani. The kids split into two groups and cheered the climbers and runners as they completed their climb up 73 flights of stairs at the Columbia Center.  In the process they interacted with children who have survived the disease and families of children who were not so lucky. Exposure to such difficult life circumstances is part of the experience from which JA teens derive inspiration and empathy.
JA has planned additional events for this summer. Details about these events can be found on the Junior Asha page.
