Welcome to a very special edition of our newsletter, 'Articles and Ideas for Clever Business Owners and Operators'.

This month we have an announcement to make which we know you will love. We’re excited to introduce you to our newest team member, Steve Gifford, Workplace Relations Practice Group Head. We celebrate our 4th birthday, take you out tuna fishing with our Senior Associate, Joseph Carneli and find out more about our Brisbane expansion in the latest edition of Lawyers Weekly.

Welcome Steve Gifford, Workplace Relations Practice Group Leader

Steve has specialised in the areas of employment, industrial relations, occupational health & safety and workers’ compensation law for in excess of 16 years. He offers clients rare access to an experienced lawyer in all these areas of law. He provides advice and representation in areas like termination of employment, enterprise bargaining agreement approval and termination, risk management, industrial disputation, occupational health & safety prosecutions and coronial inquests to name just a few.

Steve’s clients’ appreciate his technical ability, commercial approach and willingness to get to know their organisation. He is also aware that clients need practical solutions, not just a strict legalistic approach to their problem.

When he is not playing soccer or attending Karate, Steve loves spending quality time with his family.

Happy 4th Birthday!

May 23rd marked four years of Rankin. A big thank you to our clients, associates and referral partners. To our team, a big thanks for all your care, hard work and support. A special mention to Joseph Carneli who shares his birthday with us. The festivities continued the following day with a surprise trip to Hobart to visit MONA (Museum of Old and New Art).

In the spotlight: Joseph Carneli, Senior Associate

At Rankin we believe that engaged and motivated employees are at the heart of a positive legal experience for clients; so our vision and strategy is based around maximizing lawyer inspiration.

Joseph, Rankin's own Rex Hunt, went on his annual deep sea tuna fishing trip during May. Joe pre-conditioned excited Rankin team members licking their lips, in expectation of a feast, by reminding them that last year was a poor harvest. Well as you can see, 2018 was a bumper year. Bring on the sashimi!

Joseph is an experienced commercial solicitor with degrees in both Law and Business. Before coming to the law, Joseph managed a small family business for many years and also worked in marketing and product management. He therefore has a unique insight into the everyday challenges faced by small businesses and consequently offers his clients legal advice that is realistic, commercial and above all can be practically acted upon.

Announcement: Rankin drops the '& Co.'

Those that know Rankin & Co., know that we don’t follow convention. We interrogate it. If we cannot justify a process on first principles, we scrap it. That’s why we’ve done away with a traditional office space, complex partnership agreements and fixed hours of work. These are but artefacts of convention - elements that were once essential for the operation of a law firm, but which have been outmoded by the effective implementation of new technologies.

Recently, we spotted another artefact of convention - the ‘& Co.’ in Rankin & Co.

The ‘& Co.’ conjures images of the conventional law firm; images of a cornershop office with a faded billboard reading ‘lawyer & Co’.  ‘& Co.’ once stood for boutique, honest and time-tested. But today, ‘& Co.’ implies that we are no different from the rest. So, it is time to scrap yet another artefact of convention. The ‘& Co.’ that served us well for the past four years has gone. It worked for a long time and we're sad to see it go but we're even more excited to bring in the new. Change is good, and necessary.

‘Rankin & Co.’ is rebranding to ‘Rankin’.

We're getting very close to the official launch of our new branding and I thought that it would be a good time to update our most valued clients, associates and referral partners on where Rankin is going and what you can expect next.

The new Rankin logo represents change, growth, and our plans for the future.

The use of Rankin further demonstrates our boldness and makes a strong representation of our unique vision for the company. The treatment of the 'kin' in the branding reflects our approach - we consider ourselves family. We want it to be more about you than it is about us. When you build a relationship with a client or associate it's really about a long-term partnership.

Over the last few months we've been working toward this release, we're very happy with it and are confident that you will be too.

We have already begun the process of switching out the old with the new and we expect to be fully transitioned in the next few weeks.

We’d love to know what you think. We love it and hope you do too.

Lawyers Weekly Article: Boutique reveals Brisbane expansion

Self-described virtual law firm, Rankin & Co. has continued its growth trajectory by expanding into the Queensland capital, after revealing it has “grown by over 100 per cent since April 2017”, with staff now totalling 16 and revenue pushing beyond $3 million.

Brisbane workplace relations expert and principal Steve Gifford has been hired by Rankin & Co. to head up the new Brisbane base.

“I have a young family and had considered creating my own virtual firm, so when Rankin & Co. outlined their business model and ask me to join, they were pushing me through an open door,” Mr Gifford said on his new role.
