A Message From The President

May 24, 2018                       Volume 6 No. 134
Europe’s Global Privacy Agenda, Recipe for Innovation

By tomorrow, 25th May 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy for all individuals within the European Union and the European Economic Area (EEA) will come into effect. The law also addresses the export of personal data outside the EU and EEA. Whereas it is a European law, GDPR is expected to have a global reach.

Some who argue that the rule will not achieve global reach predicate their argument on the idea that the ability of companies to collect, analyze, sell and monetize user data with minimal restrictions is the basis for an innovative digital industry. They argue that new users are drawn by free services and companies make money from the data collected. Indeed that GDPR may remain enforceable only in Europe and may not be respected in other jurisdictions.
When I first read George Orwell’s piece 1984, sometime in 1982, it was just two years to that future. In the classic, George Orwell introduced the term “Big Brother is Watching you” as an expression of life without freedom.

In it, Winston Smith wrestles with oppression in Oceania, a place where the Party scrutinizes human actions with ever-watchful Big Brother. Defying a ban on individuality, Winston dares to express his thoughts in a diary and pursues a relationship with Julia. These criminal deeds bring Winston into the eye of the opposition, who then must reform the nonconformist.
