Another day, another AD on the move & this time it's Abilene Christian boss De Leon to Purdue as the Boilermakers' new Executive Senior Assoc. AD/Asst. VP for Development. De Leon: "I have a lot of mixed emotions today. I'm sad to be leaving all the wonderful people at ACU, but I'm thrilled to be joining the tremendous staff at Purdue University. My time in Abilene has been unforgettable, and I'm forever grateful to (ACU president) Dr. Phil Schubert for allowing me to fulfill my career goal of becoming a Division I athletics director at such a special place. However, the opportunity to go to a nationally recognized university like Purdue and to be a part of a leadership team in the Big Ten Conference was extremely appealing to me." Purdue AD Bobinski: "Lee is a broadly experienced, results-driven college athletics administrator with a proven record of success in managing development operations and orchestrating fundraising campaigns. Our alumni, donors and fans will immediately take to his amiable personality and commitment to broad-based success." De Leon will begin his time in West Lafayette on June 25th. (link)
The Big East wrapped its spring meetings that included key league office leaders, plus all ADs, SWAs, MBB & WBB HCs. One key item of discussion was how to continue the league's hoops success & the group also heard from NCAA Sr. VP for MBB Gavitt on the Rice Commission recommendations. In response, the conference is chairing three of the eight working groups to implement the recommendations with Commish Ackerman taking the lead on NBA issues & Xavier AD Christopher overseeing the Infractions Working Group. The league will also continue its unique hoops programming push with Fox Sports that sees HCs mic'd up throughout select games, giving viewers an interesting look & listen during the broadcasts. A bit more. (link)
A former Cal Swim student-athlete Rais says she emailed then-Golden Bears & current Penn State AD Barbour directly in 2010 about an instance of alleged sexual harassment by former Asst. AD for Student Services Muqtar, but never head back from Barbour. Rais: "I was shocked that nothing happened. I was even more shocked that I didn't receive any response. I expected something. I thought that, if they really couldn't take any more action that they would let me know - you know: 'Thank you for your letter. I'm sorry but we can't take any more action.' Something like that." Barbour releases a standard statement. Rais swam for Cal "in the early 2000s," says she later spoke up with aims of trying to avoid future abuse by Muqtar. (link)
Georgia: Bulldogs AD McGarity has his department humming, led by FB's National Championship appearance, though OnlineAthens' Weiszer points to McGarity's contract that runs through June of next year. UGA Prez Morehead: "We’re not talking about anything but the current situation, but yes I have great confidence in Greg. He’s doing a tremendous job, but you know we’re good where we are. ... We haven’t had any of those kind of conversations. […] Presidents operate on year-to-year contracts. I don’t think it’s a big issue." Morehead says he believes McGarity would like an extension, but reiterates that the pair haven't discussed the topic. (link); The Athletic's Emerson gets a comment from McGarity on his contract, "There's no urgency. We're in a good position." $48M of the potentially $63M west end zone renovation has been committed & enhancements to the weight room will wait for a bit. Concourses at Sanford Stadium are getting dressed up some with retired numbers & jerseys painted in areas. (link); The UGA Athletics Association is also selling its plane & will use charter services once it's offloaded. The plane cost $1.6M back when it was purchased in 2006. (link); Check out Georgia Governor Deal's customized ring celebrating the National Championship appearance by the Dawgs. (link)
South Carolina WBB HC Staley's defamation suit filed against Missouri AD Sterk has been settled to the tune of $50K with half going to Staley's foundation & the other half to her lawyers. Sterk also apologized for his comments after friction between the two squads back in January, but notes a continued concern about how his student-athletes & coaches were treated after the matchup in Columbia, thanks the SEC for addressing the issues. Mizzou Chancellor Cartwright: "Jim and his team have done a great job over the last two years, and I’m looking forward to continuing to work with him. Additionally, we pledge our support to creating better environments for our athletic competitors and fans, to root for our players and teams, and to end the games respectfully." (link)
More from the South Carolina as Gamecocks AD Tanner says he's "pessimistic" about having enough details back from the NCAA in the next seven days on embattled MBB student-athlete Bowen to allow for a sound decision by Bowen's family on whether he should stay in the NBA Draft or return to Columbia. Tanner calls some of the feedback from Indianapolis "vague," adds, "I’m not one to pile on the NCAA, I think they get that enough. They do a lot of good things they don’t get a lot of credit for. But it's (the investigation) just not complete. There are still questions that are being asked, there’s some determinations to be made. [...] I’m still holding out a little bit of hope that there’s some direction before we get to the end of this thing, where he knows what he can consider." (link)
N.C. State's release calls it an "unrivaled licensing deal" as the Wolfpack & rival North Carolina packaged their licensing rights & IMG College Licensing will be the partner to steward both brands. For the Tar Heels it's an extension with IMGCL (through 2025), while the NCSU piece is brand new for the company (four-year deal). Of note, "By capitalizing on their combined licensing value, both institutions received signing bonuses and improvements to previous contracts." (link, link)

The Summit League is moving its office from Elmhurst, IL - just west of Chicago - to Sioux Falls, SD, which will give the league "a more centralized location within its current footprint." The relocation will be done by August 1 in a temporary home before moving into space at the Sanford Sports Complex. Commish Douple: "We have always felt at home in Sioux Falls and this move further establishes our presence in the geographic area of our league." (link); Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner continues pressing Vegas as a key marketplace for the Pac-12, outlines how the league should capitalize on the glitz & glam by setting up premier opening weekend FB matchups once the new Raiders/UNLV stadium is done, as well as playing the FB title game at the end of the year, buttressed by notable MBB games the night before in T-Mobile Arena. (link)

Athletic departments in the state of Oregon receive monies from the state lottery, which previously included sports parlays, leading to questions about how the recent SCOTUS decision on PASPA may impact the lottery proceeds. Oregon AD Mullens & Oregon State boss Barnes both call the support stream "critical" to their books. Portland State received $1M+ last year & the Beavers got $453K. Barnes does believe a move on PASPA could be positive if it leads to new revenues. Mullens thinks a "highly regulated framework" could be created to ensure integrity in the competitions. More. (link); Notable sports gambling media personality Fuhrman: "The part of the sports gambling legalization debate that baffles me is the NCAA, Pro leagues, and other conservative groups pretending NOBODY is currently betting sports outside of legal jurisdictions. People will find ways to bet; either get on board or get out of the way." (link)
With the Kansas AD search as backdrop, KUSports.com explores comments from Iowa State AD Pollard about holding a post in the Big 12. Acknowledging that "it can be absolutely smothering if you want to do it well because you've got to be everything to everybody," Pollard identifies culture fit with the campus and ability to overcome paralysis by analysis to actually make decisions as primary keys to success. Also talks about being able to handle "unhealthy" scrutiny with instantaneous feedback coming from decisions. Circling back on the culture piece: "Creating that culture is not as simple as just saying it. You've got to walk it. And that's what makes it so challenging. People like to say, 'Oh, you need a fund-raiser or you need this or you need that.' I think culture raises money and individuals just facilitate culture. You could be the world's greatest fund-raiser but if you're selling a bad culture, people don't want to be part of that." (link)
Deadspin's Hruby doesn't hold back with this title: "The NCAA Is Running Out Of Excuses On Brain Injuries." Hruby goes deep on the every day life of former Texas FB student-athlete Ploetz and his wife's 24/7 care for him during his final few years before he passed away in 2015. Seven months after his death, a CTE diagnosis came in and in 2017 Deb Ploetz filed a wrongful death lawsuit seeking $1M+ in damages against the NCAA. That trial begins next month and will be "the first such suit brought against a major football organization on behalf of a former player with CTE to be hear by a jury." Former Texas Women's AD and past Women's Sports Foundation CEO Lopiano believes the NCAA and its member schools could face more than $1B in brain trauma liability. If that estimate seems high, consider this: "An actuarial report produced as part of the NCAA’s class action settlement in 2014 estimates that for athletes whose college careers began between 1956 and 2008, as many as 300 a year will someday be diagnosed with CTE." Lots, lots more here. (link)
Vanderbilt Asst. AD for FB Grooms is the latest 1.Question guest for co-host @TaiMBrown & the pair discuss how the admin-level football operations role benefits the athletics department as a whole. Grooms notes that the Football Operations Admin has to translate all aspects of the program down to one voice in senior-level athletics decisions. Of note, "Being in between the head coach and AD, you have to keep the head coach abreast of the big picture items in the athletics department as he is usually tuned in to just the football program. […] You have to have a relationship with the AD because you have to communicate the aspects of the football program that may have an effect on major decisions in the department." (link)
Under Armour's struggles continue as Nike will take over the on-field deal with Major League Baseball starting in 2020, an opportunity previously won by UA. Per SBD's Lefton, "An industry source said that by not doing the deal, UA will save around $50M at a time when the brand's growth has slowed and its market cap shrunk dramatically. By shedding the MLB deal, UA can reduce overhead at a time when that looks to be paramount." (link)
It's Personnel: UC Riverside Sr. Assoc. AD/CFAO Boele bumped up to SWA. (link); Holy Cross AD Pine promotes Asst. AD Dawkins to Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Development and gives her sport oversight. (link); Tennessee's Vice Chancellor for Communications Robinson departs just three weeks after former Chancellor Davenport. Robinson initially worked for the Vols as Senior Assoc. AD for Communications before switching to the campus side a year ago. (link); The Orlando Magic have expressed interest in Michigan State's MBB HC Izzo. (link); Baylor AD Rhoades brings former Virginia Men's Tennis HC Boland back from the USTA to the campus side, hires him as the new Director of Tennis and Men's Head Tennis Coach for the Bears. (link); NC State extends both Track & Field/Men's XC HC Geiger and Women's XC HC Henes through 2020. (link); Drexel Prez Fry gets a five-year extension. (link)
Tennessee AD Fulmer enjoys league AD meetings better than his previous days in coaches meetings, comparing those to Cold War Era Russia: "It’s different than the coaches. [That is]  like sitting with the Russians — at least it used to be. No one wanted to agree on anything. In the athletic directors’ meetings, everybody has their reasons for doing things or voting how they vote. But there’s also some feeling of cooperation for the conference’s sake, and I’ve enjoyed that. ... I think I learn something every time I go. We have three former coaches now that are in there now [as athletic directors], so that’s maybe given them another perspective on things a little bit more." On the prediction by former Auburn FB HC Tuberville that Fulmer will one day have a presence like Wisconsin AD Alvarez, Fulmer: "I’ve only done this for six months so I’ve got a long way to prove I’m a Barry Alvarez. But I hope we can help impact the conference, and in our case, certainly the University of Tennessee, so check back with me in [14] years. That’s about how long [Alvarez] has been doing this." (link)
TV: This piece from the Wall Street Journal got a ton of play yesterday, even though the headline doesn't match the value of the contents. Ultimately, what's important here is ESPN's struggling internal morale, business/finance trends & some friction between recently departed boss Skipper & Disney head honcho Iger stretching back to 2012, not its "being consumed by politics," as the headline tries to sensationalize. Former ESPN headliner & current WME-IMG co-Prez Shapiro: "They have some enormous challenges but they have by far the best brand in sports." (link); The Athletic's Davis in follow-up to the piece says there's no evidence politics has played a role in ESPN's subscriber losses. (link); Neilsen's addition of OOH (out of home) viewing measurement has been significant for ESPN, to the tune of a 8.5% lift in ratings points. Also on OOH, "Broadcast networks saw a 13% lift among member of Gen Z and a 10% lift among millennials. Entertainment networks saw a 5% lift with Gen Z and a 4% lift with millennials." (link)
We previously included the story on a "multi-million dollar" donation from Simmons Bank to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and earlier this week the bank made it official by presenting members of the UAPB athletic department and Chancellor Alexander with the $2.5M check. Interim AD Wells-Kilbert on the largest gift in school history: "We are grateful to Simmons Bank for its long-standing partnership with UAPB, and more specifically, this major gift that will allow us to complete much-needed upgrades. These improvements will benefit our student-athletes and create a better fan experience during football and baseball games." (link)
Legal Matters: University of Arkansas System Chief Audit Executive Flournoy "did not see fraud" but did find some "areas where we could strengthen some controls" in his routine internal audit regarding travel and purchasing policies in the Razorbacks athletic department. The 20-page report references more than a dozen "issues" in FY17, including two charges "totaling $2,846 related to the payment of airfare for spouses of employees traveling on Athletics business." (link); The University of New Mexico Foundation must release records connected to the sponsorship agreement with WisePies. (link); Forbes' Heitner goes in on why the NCAA's victory in Arkansas Tech's (DII) legal pushback on having to vacate 205 wins due to violations that occurred in 2012 "reinforces strength...to hand out penalties" for the governing body. (link)
The Comeback's Keeley predicts three ways the NFL's new national anthem policy might affect college football: 1) It could embolden schools to make similar rules ("Ultimately, most schools perform the national anthem while football players are still in locker rooms. We have to imagine that will continue, but it also begs the question of whether or not schools will ensure that is always the case in order to limit protesting opportunities."); 2) Players know that the NFL owners are still taking notes ("It’s a sad thing that players have to balance their potential future employment against standing up (or kneeling down) for what they think is right, but the NFL is a private entity and, for better or worse, can make their own rules most of the time. If you’re a good talent on the fringe of getting picked by an NFL team, having a protest or two on your “record” could possibly be the difference between getting selected or not."); and, 3) It's going to force coaches to have actual opinions ("[The new NFL rule] is going to have a trickle-down effect on the college level and might even lead to an increase in protests here where there aren’t strict rules. That’s going to put the focus back on coaches to actually present opinions and clear ideologies when it comes to freedom of expression and how it correlates to their football team. They can say they don’t allow it, they can say they’re cool with it, but either way, they have to say something.") (link)
Also Noticed: Colorado AD George gets $25K for each team that has a single-year perfect APR, will pick up $250K this year. (link); Texas AD Del Conte on the future of concession prices: "We’re going to be like Walmart. We’re going to roll back those prices. Not too far back, but we’re rolling them back." (link); Binghamton will host the first Contemporary Athletics Issues Summit for coaches and administrators in both high school and collegiate sports this August. "The focus of the summit is to enhance communication within athletic departments and collaborate with the main campus and community. Clinicians in the areas of collegiate athletics, athletics trainers, and mental-health professionals will address how empirically based techniques can foster an environment that empowers student-athletes and staff. Key topics will include leadership, mental health, substance use, the evolution of coaching to understand the unique needs of emerging adults." (link); The Big South renews with Geico for another three years. (link); Pitt FB will play at Wisconsin in 2026 and the Badgers will return the favor in 2027. (link); Lots of Houston FB matchup news: home against Utah in 2026 and in Salt Lake City the following year, home and away with Rice in 2022 & 2023, respectively and home against UTSA in 2025. (link); Kentucky FB student-athlete Walker faces drug trafficking and drug paraphernalia charges after his Thursday morning arrest. (link)
University of London professor Empson in this Harvard Business Review piece asks a question many, if not all, of us (and our significant others) would like the answer to: "If You’re So Successful, Why Are You Still Working 70 Hours a Week?" Piece offers that insecurity is often at the heart of overwork and burnout, especially with the "inherent intangibility of knowledge work" and culture of promotion that turns colleagues into competitors. Talks about elite professional orgs targeting "insecure overachievers" during the hiring process because they are self-motivating and self-disciplining, and who tend to blame themselves, not the org culture, for their own overwork. A final message to leadership cautions: "If you are a leader, you have a responsibility not just to your firm but to the people who work within it. Help your colleagues to achieve their full potential, but do not allow yourself to exacerbate and exploit their insecurities. And remember that your ultimate 'duty of care' is to yourself." (link)
