World commemorates second preeclampsia day
To raise awareness of preeclampsia as a life-threatening complication of pregnancy, maternal health stakeholders around the world are through different activities joining forces to commemorate the second annual World Preeclampsia Day today.

At our Centre, under the auspices of the East Africa Preterm Birth Initiaive (PTBi-EA), we are contributing to the management of preeclampsia by skilling health workers through the PRONTO In-Situ simulation-based obstetrics and newborn emergency training and clinical mentorship at select hospitals in Eastern Uganda. PTBi-EA is doing similar trainings in Kenya’s Migori County.

Latest Research
Short term sequelae of preeclampsia: a single center cohort study
“Hypertension and proteinuria are common after 6 months underlining the importance of close follow up to identify those women who need further care.”
Caesarean section audit to improve quality of care in a rural referral hospital in Tanzania
“Although this is a single centre study, these findings suggest that unnecessary Caesarean sections exist at an alarming rate even in referral hospitals and suggest that a vast number can be averted by introducing a focused CS audit system. Our findings indicate that CS audit is a useful tool and, if well implemented, can enhance rational use of resources, improve decision-making and harmonise practice among care providers.”
Risk factors for mortality and effect of correct fluid prescription in children with diarrhoea and dehydration without severe acute malnutrition admitted to Kenyan hospitals: an observational, association study
“Children at risk of in-hospital death are those with complex presentations rather than uncomplicated dehydration, and the prescription of recommended rehydration guidelines reduces risk of death. Strategies to optimise the delivery of recommended guidance should be accompanied by studies on the management of dehydration in children with comorbidities, the vulnerability of young girls, and the delivery of immediate care.”

Most of deaths due to pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are avoidable through the provision of timely and effective care to the women presenting with these complications. Optimizing health care to prevent and treat women with hypertensive disorders is a necessary step towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
