The Pittsburgh Region's Transportation Future
Last month, the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce hosted county and city elected officials from across the 10-county Pittsburgh region at an event at the Roberto Clemente Museum to discuss shared opportunities to collaborate to move our region forward. The event served as an opportunity to underscore the work undertaken by the public and private sector leaders of the Regional Transportation Alliance to develop a framework and set of principles to guide future transportation investments.
The Pittsburgh region's business community recognizes that a robust, well-maintained and well-connected transportation network is critical for the economic competitiveness of the region. The Allegheny Conference and the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce continue to be focused on strengthening the region's transportation network to ensure a prosperous economy and superior quality of life for all who live and do business in the region. Leading transportation and mobility experts will be in Pittsburgh in October for Rail-Volution, a national mobility conference that we are proud to support. We look forward to learning from these experts.
Carly Dobbins-Bucklad, senior policy analyst with the Allegheny Conference, recently authored a column in the Pittsburgh Business Times on the urgency to take charge of our region's transportation future and the commitment of the Allegheny Conference to convene the public, private and nonprofit communities to work together to identify high-impact transportation opportunities and develop plans to achieve them.

Improving Pennsylvania's Business Competitiveness
To ensure that the Pittsburgh region remains a nationally and globally competitive region for economic development and job growth, it's imperative that we continue to make progress on our overall business climate. This will ensure we are able to continue to attract new employers to invest here and encourage those already here to expand their operations.
The Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce is closely tracking a number of policy issues in Harrisburg affecting the business climate of our region and state. A top priority remains the need to fix a recent tax policy change on the depreciation of business assets that puts Pennsylvania at a competitive disadvantage with every other state in the country. Legislation that fixes this issue continues to make its way through the General Assembly, having passed the State Senate last month. A few more hurdles remain as the bill makes its way through the legislative process. We will continue to advocate strongly for this legislative solution to the bonus depreciation issue.
This recent tax policy change is just one issue facing the competitiveness of our business climate. The Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce leads the statewide CompetePA coalition, which advocates for a number of state policy changes to encourage job growth and economic development in our region and state. 2018 Pennsylvania Legislative Reception
Once again, the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia to host the annual Pennsylvania Legislative Reception. The event, which is taking place in Harrisburg on June 4, brings together state lawmakers and the business community to celebrate the progress made to improve our region's and state's economy and quality of life. The reception is preceded by a joint public policy seminar featuring remarks by high-level state government officials.

Nominations Now Open for Greater Pittsburgh ATHENA Awards and Scholarship
Do you know a woman in the Pittsburgh region who demonstrates excellence in her work and mentorship of other women? Or a younger woman who is emerging as a leader? Nominate them here by 5 p.m., Friday, June 30 for the Greater Pittsburgh ATHENA Awards.
Named for the Greek goddess of strength and wisdom, the ATHENA Award recognizes women who demonstrate excellence in their profession, contribute to their community and help other women to succeed. The ATHENA Young Professional Award recognizes an emerging leader age 35 or younger. (Click here to learn about previous recipients.)
Applications for the 2018-2019 Barbara McNees Spirit of ATHENA Scholarship are also open. The scholarship, a competitive award, pays the recipient's tuition for attendance to an executive education program at Carnegie Mellon University's Tepper School of Business: the Carnegie Mellon Leadership & Negotiation Academy for Women. Please also mark your calendar for the awards luncheon on Friday, Oct. 5 at the Westin Convention Center Pittsburgh. Nearly 900 women and men attended last year's luncheon, which is one of the largest gatherings among the hundreds of ATHENA International-affiliated events presented around the world each year.
