June News from JOF

Hi Friends Summer is always a busy time for us at Jackson Orthopedic Foundation.

Summer Internships: We are finalizing plans for our Summer Intern Program (July 10 to August 18), and look forward to meeting our new intern applicants after the application deadline closes June 16. If you know a student who will be in the Bay Area this summer, has completed a year of college, and is interested in learning more about a career in health care, our program may be a match. Learn more about the program and apply here by June 16.

Injection Workshop: On Saturday, June 23, JOF will offer the first of two Orthopedic Injection Workshops we’ll be making available to primary care clinicians in 2018 at Holy Names University’s Nursing Simulation Lab in Oakland. Learn more about the workshop and sign up here.

New Digs: JOF is moving! We have signed a lease on a new office at 400 30th Street (at Summit), Suite 102, Oakland (CA 94609), and will be moving there in June. We plan to be in our new offices by July 1, just in time for our Summer Intern Program to get underway, along with other JOF activities.

Men's Health Month: Please scroll down to learn about Men's Health Month, which is being observed during June. And don't forget about Men's Health Week, June 11
–17.

Celebrating Our 20th! And finally, we are making plans in 2018 to toast our 20th anniversary as an organization and our work to improve the lives of people with musculoskeletal conditions through education, research and service. Watch for news about our celebratory plans as they unfold.

We hope you find our newsletter useful, and we invite you to continue to engage with us on social media. We have added a link, below, to make it easy to forward the newsletter to others whom you think would be interested in our work. Thanks for spreading the word about JOF!

JOF's Summer Intern Program Offers the Opportunity to Explore Various Health Care Fields

Saturday, June 16, is the final day to apply for JOF’s Summer Intern Program, which runs July 10 to August 18, 2018.

The annual program is designed to provide college students with an immersion experience in health care. It gives students the opportunity to explore various health fields while shadowing experienced providers as they treat patients.

Whether a student is interested in becoming a nurse, a physician, a physician assistant, or a physical or occupational therapist, this internship allows each student the chance to witness the unique aspects of each professional role.

The cost of the program in 2018 is $500 per student. Scholarships may be made available, based on student need.

Students can apply online or download the application in printable PDF format. They will be contacted for an interview two to three weeks following receipt of their application.

Please contact our Intern Coordinator with any questions.

Don't Miss It! JOF's Next Injection Workshop is June 23 at Holy Names University in Oakland

As part of our effort to improve patient outcomes through professional education, JOF will offer two Orthopedic Injection Workshops in 2018 at Holy Names University in Oakland. The workshops will be held in the university's Nursing Simulation Lab on Saturday, June 23, and Saturday, October 27.

Instructors are Kathleen Geier, DNP, and AJ Benham, DNP. Each workshop, valued at 6.5 CEU, is a day-long session with research-based content and hands-on practice using anatomical models. Price for the June 23 workshop is $300.

Corticosteroid injections can be a useful addition to the available treatment options for musculoskeletal and joint injuries and painful conditions. The injections require specialized skills, but with practice they can be performed safely and effectively by primary care clinicians.

Learn more about the workshops here.

You can sign up for either the June 23 or the October 27 workshop here. For questions, write info@jacksonortho.org or call 510.238.4851.

Men's Health Month Brings Focus to Important Health Issues

Health issues can be equally complex for men as for women. Getting it right involves eating well, exercising regularly and getting regular checkups. It sounds simple enough, but we can sometimes lose sight of how important these health truisms are.

When it comes to exercise, we need to find, and do, something we enjoy. If you love to swim, that’s what you’ll do, but if that’s not your thing, there are many other ways to stay active. Here’s an article about finding an exercise you love and sticking with it.

In seeking information about men’s health in June in observance of Men’s Health Month—and June 11–17 during Men’s Health Week—we quickly see there are some very good reasons to follow these health axioms.

The purpose of Men’s Health Month is to heighten awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. This annual observance gives health care providers, public policy makers, the media, and individuals an opportunity to encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury.

The Men’s Health Resource Center, managed by the Men's Health Network, a national non-profit headquartered in Washington, DC, suggests the health spectrum for men includes cardiovascular health, sexual reproductive health, mental health, prostate health, cancers, and health issues connected to obesity, aging and nutrition. Aging issues can include cardiovascular, dental, eye, gastrointestinal, genitourinary and respiratory health.

And then there’s our favorite—skeletal health, or what we call musculoskeletal health. Maintaining musculoskeletal health can be challenging. According to the Men’s Resource Center, middle-aged men don’t experience loss of bone mass at the rate that women do following menopause, yet by age 65 or 70 both women and men are losing bone mass at the same rate. And the ability to process calcium, an essential nutrient for bone health, decreases in both sexes.

There are other statistics that are more troubling about men. For example, men are at greater risk for death in every age group. And more men than women are born (105 vs. 100), yet by age 35, women outnumber men.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the top threats to men’s health include heart disease, cancer and unintentional injury. Men also die at higher rates than women from 9 of the top 10 causes of death and are the victims of over 92% of workplace deaths. And yet women are 100% more likely to visit the doctor for annual examinations and preventive services than men (CDC study, 2001). What you don't know can sometimes hurt you.

The Alameda County Public Health Department offers a valuable resource guide on its website suggesting ways that men can stay physically, mentally and even financially healthy. Click here for a pdf copy of the guide.
