News and updates from mission driven communications agency, Movement Media

Creative & Collaborative
Climate Solutions

Dear friends & allies,

I’m proud to share Movement Media’s latest video, produced with Gather Films for Grow Ahead, a crowdfunding platform that supports climate resiliency projects around the world. The video explains their latest initiative to plant 1 million trees by 2020 in partnership with small-scale farmers.

Among our highlighted press coverage thismonth, is an epic podcast where Australian health and sustainability author, Alexx Stuart, of Low Tox Life, has an in-depth interview with Dr. Gero Leson, Dr. Bronner’s Vice President of Special Operations, and his work building the company’s fair trade and organic supply chain.

We hope you’ll watch and listen to both and read on below!

All the best,
Ryan
on behalf of Movement Media

In the Works

Grow Ahead’s platform allows for supporters, as organizations or individuals, to fund development efforts led by small-scale farmers around the world, such as farmer-to-farmer trainings, scholarships, and tree plantings. Recently, Heine Brothers’ Coffee, an organic and fair trade coffee roaster from Louisville, Kentucky, and green coffee importing cooperative, Coop Coffees, announced commitments to support a regenerative agroforestry tree planting campaign in Northern Peru for the Norandino Cooperative as part of Grow Ahead’s initiative to plant 1 million trees by 2020 in partnership with small-scale farmers.

PLANT TREES. SUPPORT AGROFORESTRY. GROW RESILIENCE.

Fellow animal rights and social justice activist and funder Alissa Hauser, recently told me about Liberate Philanthropy, “a new blog series curated by Justice Funders to re-imagine and practice philanthropy free of its current constraints — the accumulation and privatization of wealth, and the centralization of power and control — to one that redistributes wealth, democratizes power and shifts economic control to communities.” Love this notion. Can’t wait to read more.

I am deeply inspired by the Earth Guardians and Our Children’s Trust who are in the process of suing the government for failing to safeguard the climate for future generations. These youth have successfully done it before in Washington state, and, to the consternation of the current federal administration, on October 29, 2018, Juliana v. United States is set to go to trial.

The episode, "Won’t You Be My Neighbor?: Kids’ TV, Then And Now", of the NPR show, 1A, made me so nostalgic for my childhood mornings watching Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Reading Rainbow and Sesame Street. The messages of inclusiveness, love, and the power of imagination empowered me as a child and it was wonderful to hear all of the ways PBS is doing the very same for the children of this generation, my own two boys included. I remember always wanting to make a donation during the fundraisers when I was little, but I never had the power or money to do so. I went online and did just that after the podcast episode was over and it felt so good.

While I was recently looking into installing a rain barrel to the gutter system on my house, I came across the DC Rain Barrel rebate incentive program. As of January 4, 2018, District homeowners who install rain barrels are eligible for a rebate based on the volume of stormwater that is captured and stored from rooftops. Rebates are issued as a direct reimbursement to homeowners at a rate of $2 per gallon captured. For example, a 50-gallon rain barrel would yield a $100 rebate after installation. I’m psyched to install a rain barrel system on my property!

This link leads to go-go music. Recently, I listened to an episode of the NPR show, 1A, called "Conserving the Culture of Chocolate Cities." DC was majority black when I was a kid and now has a pronounced vanilla swirl, so that title caught my attention. It inspired me to share some some funky DC music. This track is by Slim.
