June 4th marks the end of our season and the much awaited SPRING SHOWCASE!

There's only one week left to finish any turnings you were planning to enter for the Spring Showcase! What better way to celebrate woodturning than to showcase our work?  Competition promotes learning and helps hone our skills.

You can enter one piece in each of eight types of turning projects:
  • Bowl and Platter Class
  • Spindle Class
  • Box Class
  • Hollow Form Class
  • Pen or Pencil Class
  • Segmented Class
  • Innovative Class
  • Wig Stand Class
The TWG has a bounty of turners - some with accomplished skills and others whose talent is developing. To provide a way for everyone to participate fairly, the Showcase will have three skill levels:
  • Novice Level
  • Intermediate Level
  • Open Level
Everyone should feel welcome, but we really want to encourage people who are new turners. The rules will help you learn how to get ready.

This year's Showcase will include knowledgeable, independent judges who will award ribbons and give feedback to participants, but it will also allow the members to choose one piece that gets the Best In Show ribbon.

Wig stands will be in a special class with ribbons and Woodchuckers Gift Certificates given to the Best In Class. Members may submit as many wig stands as possible. After the Showcase, all wig stands entered will be donated to cancer hospitals. Instructions on turning a Wig stand are available here.

Here’s how the Showcase will work.

[To save time, print the Showcase Entry Form (print double sided, please) and fill it out at home – one form for each of your pieces. If you don’t have a printer, there will be forms available at the venue.]

On June 4, our meeting will start at the usual time, 7:00 PM. If you are participating in the Showcase, come directly to the Entry Desk. Your name will be checked against our membership list (you need to be a member in good standing). Once you have an entry form for each piece entered, your work will be taken to the competition room by a "runner." Runners keep the entry form with each entry.

In the competition room, each piece is checked to ensure that there are no identifying marks visible. Signatures will be covered so that all entries are anonymous. The entry is then put in the appropriate section along with its entry form (remember that judges have the final say as to what skill level each piece represents). No members will be in the room during preparation and while the judges are making their decisions.

While the judges are working in the competition room, Dave Taylor will be giving a demo on wig stand making.

When the judges have finished awarding ribbons, members will be invited to view the showcase and cast their ballots for the Best In Show award.  One ribbon will be awarded to the entry that gets the most votes.

Please note: With June 4 being a special evening featuring our Spring Showcase, we will not have our usual Show & Tell table or our Raffle Table.
Last Meeting Report
At our May 7 meeting TWG member Wyatt Walkem demonstrated coring green wood to make nesting bowls. Wyatt talked about the types of coring systems available, their challenges and their advantages.

A big thank-you to Wyatt from all the guild members for his thorough, informative and enthusiastic talk!

News
Registration is still open for the AAW 2018 Symposium taking place June 14-17 in Portland, Oregon. The conference will bring together more than more 1,200 turners from around the globe to learn, share, and celebrate the art and craft of woodturning making it the largest woodturning event in the world. No other event offers as many opportunities for all levels of turners to learn from the world’s best.
For program and registration instructions, go to the AAW's Symposium promotional page.
The Toronto Woodturners Guild encourages all its members to join and support the AAW.
Show & Tell Table
With June 4 being a special evening featuring our Spring Showcase, we will not have our usual Show & Tell table, or our raffle. Start planning for next year, with our first meeting on Monday September 10.
President's Message
The TWG Woodturning Showcase is only one week away. I trust many of you are in your shops finishing up your entries. Maybe you already have a piece that you completed over the last year that spoke to you in one of those “Aha!” moments. So many of you have shared wonderful turnings at our Show & Tell table through the year, I can’t wait to see what you’ll bring for our annual competition.
The wig stand challenge is new to our competition this year. I hope it will generate lots of interest so it becomes a permanent feature of future events. It’s all for a great cause in support cancer patients.

Since this will likely be the last regular eBlast for the 2017-2018 season, I want to send you every best wish for a wonderful summer. It’s time to kick back and enjoy the warm weather that has finally arrived. If you spend time on the lathe, think back on the great demonstrations we’ve seen this year to "prime the pump" on your own creative efforts. Turning is fun, but as we say on our website, it’s potentially dangerous. So above all, be safe!

To every member: thank you for supporting the TWG with your attendance, participation and membership. I also want to give a special shout out to the people who help with organizing and running our Guild. The TWG would not be possible without the hours of volunteer, unpaid effort so many members put in. From sweeping the floor after a demo to work behind the scenes – it’s all terribly important and very much appreciated.
