Planters on Lafayette

The above photo of the tree pit perennial planter at Great Jones and Lafayette St. was taken last year, lasting well through the Fall and Winter.  Great Jones St. neighbors created and tended it for three years.  It has, however, been replaced (image below) with annual geraniums.  Read the whole story at the NoHo News and find out how to restore its former perennial glory.

Moving AWAY

Away, an e-commerce luggage startup, that has graced Lafayette St. has signed a lease for 56,500 sq. ft. of both showroom and office space at 82 Mercer Street, also known as 503-511
Broadway.  Sorry to see them go, but happy for these two women entrepreneurs, Jen Rubio's and Stephanie Korey's, success.

Welcome The Bari

Korean Food Under a
Japanese Influence, at the Bari
 ,
New York Times-May 8, 2018,
by Florence Fabricant.
The Bari, in NoHo, blends Korean and Japanese influences. Its specialty is food in bowls (bari means bowl), with a separate section on the menu listing seven, including bluefin tuna poke, udon noodles, uni bibimbap and a rice and farro “risotto.”  ... At the sushi bar, a $65 omakase includes more than a dozen pieces.
Looks pretty tempting!

54 Bond St.

54 Bond Street in Manhattan has received a 2018 Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award, the New York Landmarks Conservancy’s highest honor.  It involved $4.5 million in extensive restoration as well as the replication of over 1,000 intricate cast-iron units. Read about the whole process:  Cast Iron Gem in NoHo Wins Preservation Award  Habitat, May 24, 2018

And, then there is the saga of 54 Bond St.'s tree pits.  Adding the three tree pits desired by the Condo Board required approvals from LPC, DOB, DOT and the Parks Dept.  After approx. $40,000 in exploratory fees and filings, 54 Bond has abandoned the project.  More excrutiating details at The Tree Pit That Became a Money Pit

Take the 2018 NoHo Survey.

Last year we launched our first informal census of NoHo-Bowery Stakeholders.  This year we are expanding it to include anyone living or working or owning property between Astor Place and Houston St. and Mercer St. to the east side of the Bowery.  The only identification we require is identifying your block.  CLICK HERE TO TAKE THE SURVEY.

M1 Hotel Text Amendment
  • The Department of City Planning (DCP) is proposing a city-wide zoning text amendment to establish a new special permitfor hotels in M1 districts. If passed, this amendment would require a special permit for hotels in M1 districts, except in MX and M1/R, that are currently as-of-right. Presented last month, City Planning will return to answer additional questions.
And, speaking of hotels, there is illuminating new research on NYC Tourism and other industries from the Center for the Urban Future..."tourism has been elevated from a fairly important part of the city’s economy to one of the four leading drivers of job creation in New York. Indeed, tourism now accounts for about as many jobs as the city’s tech sector, the creative economy, or the finance industry."

Thurs., 6/21 @ 6:30 PM- P.S. 41 Greenwich Village Elementary School, Auditorium, 116 W. 11th St.FULL BOARD, Terri Cude, Chair.  THE PUBLIC SESSION BEGINS AT 6:30 PM. SPEAKER’S CARDS WILL BE NOT BE ACCEPTED AFTER 7:00 PM.

May Wrap-Up:
  • 292 Elizabeth St., Torishiki Restaurant - Replacing the former Siggy's at this address, there was an application for a destination high-end reservations-only Japanese Yakitori Restaurant proposing a 1:00AM closing.  NoHo and contiguous neighbors opposed the application for its intrusion on an unusually narrow and highly residential street.  The Community Board agreed.

  • Merchants House Museum vs. 27 East 4th Street - Therefore, CB2 recommends denial of the application for a text change and two special permits to facilitate the application for bulk and use changes under 74-712 unless and until the proposed development is modified so as to avoid all harm to the Merchant’s House Museum as evidenced by support of the Museum board and the New York City Parks Department.  There are three more stops, however:  Manhattan Borough President — by June 25; City Planning Commission — by August 25; Final Decision: City Council — by September 25.  Here's how you can help.

Other Things
  • 363 Lafayette St. will not be the future home of The Groucho Club.  Because the plan has taken so long to materialize, 363 Lafayettte has leased those floors to office tenants, instead.  We are assuming the plans for a Lafayette St. entrance to the upper floors has also been set-aside, and while an office tenant may have access to the seventh floor terrace, there will be no liquor license attached.

  • The onorous Landmarks Preservation Commission proposal has been defeated.  A jubilent Andrew Berman at GVSHP reports on the restoration of more thorough oversite and fewer staff-level approvals for appropriateness.

But, it's not over yet, there's the matter of the replacement of former Chair Srinivasan.  Read the coverage from Human Scale NYC ..."current LPC Commissioner Fred Bland, a partner in the huge architectural firm of Beyer, Blinder and Belle - and widely regarded as Srinivasan 2.0 in terms of his voting and commentary at hearings -  has been appointed by Mayor de Blasio as interim vice chair. "
