Dalat International School News - Penang, Malaysia
25 May, 2018

As I type these words into my computer, I sit in an empty office occupied by a desk, a plastic chair, and one filing cabinet. The “old” administration building has been gutted of all the furniture and other resources and is now just an empty shell. All the other administrative and support staff have scattered to other temporary locations around campus until we are able to move in to our new building later this summer. It honestly feels a little bit like I am the captain going down with his ship.

These buildings have served us well and the move to our new facilities is bittersweet. We needed new facilities and it is exciting (sweet) for us to be moving into them. That said, we look back on these old wooden buildings and are a little bit sad (bitter) to say goodbye. The memories of what has happened and what has been accomplished in these simple wooden structures will stay with us long after they disappear. Simply stated, the transition, move, and change that the new building brings is bittersweet.

Transition is never easy. It is chaotic, messy, confusing, frustrating, etc. We have been in transition to new facilities for three long years. It started with the construction of The CASTLE right in the middle of our school. Then last year we built our new residence life building (The Lighthouse) on lower campus and this year we took on the monumental task of constructing our new administration, high school, and auditorium building (The Harbor).

I am grateful for a community of staff, students, and parents who have been patient and supportive during all the turmoil that the construction has created for us. The noise, dust, and inconvenience of it all has not been easy for anyone. Yet the grace and patience that you have shown has been amazing and makes me so proud of our community. . .

Okay, so the movers have come and have now taken away my desk, chair, and filing cabinet. I am sitting on the floor in an empty office completing the last administrative task in this old and dilapidated, yet memory-filled building, the finishing of this article for the Dalat News.

In a second or two I will get up (slowly as I am now 50 years old), turn off the light, and walk out for the last time. An era of this school will be coming to an end (bitter) and a new one will begin (sweet). What an amazing time to be a part of Dalat.

Here are some ways to help make this time easier for yourself, your family, and our school community:
  • Plan ahead and arrive early for morning drop-off.
  • Consider sending older students to school and home using Grab.
  • Communicate specific pick-up times to your students.
  • Students with younger siblings should gather everyone to wait for their ride home together.
  • Students waiting for pick-up should wait on the benches under the awnings away from the upper field entry point.
  • Be ready to jump in as soon as your ride arrives.
  • Patience and careful driving benefits everyone!

Senior Prank
2018년 졸업생들 낙서장난
2018年毕业生涂鸦旧教学楼
On Monday evening, May 21, the Class of 2018 took over the high school, wielding cans of spray paint as their weapons. They tagged all of the old buildings with “Class of 2018” and others messages to remember them by. The Senior Prank is a tradition at Dalat, and is always supervised and approved by the sponsors. It gives the graduating seniors a chance to do something memorable and bring laughter to the other students at the same time. The Class of 2018 will definitely be remembered!
