ENRIO Meeting Rome

On April 11, 2018 ENRIO held its bi-annual meeting in Rome. Nicole Foeger (ENRIO chair) welcomed the participants and thanked Cinzia Caporale (CNR) for hosting this meeting. For the first time over 40 participants from 23 member countries took part in the meeting.

ENRIO/ENERI RIO Boot Camp

The “Training and Capacity Building” WP of the ENERI project organized a Research Integrity Boot Camp April 9-10, 2018. The boot camp took its inspiration from a similar concept in the U.S., namely the U.S. RIO Boot Camp in which a chosen case is exercised from a variety of perspectives in a collegially facilitated workshop over a few intensive days.

Portugal: Portugal issues an official statement on Integrity on Scientific Research

The National Council of Ethics for Life Sciences (CNECV), faced with the lack of a substantial framework on research integrity in Portugal, which may undermine the credibility of national science, and attentive to international developments, especially the recent publication of the revised edition of ALLEA’s "The European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity", has considered it to be of the utmost relevance to issue a statement on the matter of research integrity.

France: Creation of the French Office for Integrity in Science (OFIS)

As a result of the Corvol’s report, a decision was taken by the Ministry of Superior Education and Research: the creation of the OFIS, l’Office Français pour l’Integrité en Science (French Office for Integrity in Science) in September 2017. The goal of the OFIS is not to deal with individual cases but rather to act as an observatory for the implementation of the French National Charter for RI. Its general role is to coordinate and impulse the efforts of RI in all institutions.

Germany: Third version of the Curriculum "Good Scientific Practice"

On behalf of and in cooperation with the German Research Ombudsman (Ombudsman fuer die Wissenschaft), some experts from the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) and teachers from other universities, Team Scientific Integrity will soon start the revision of the 2012 curriculum.

Sweden: Responsibility for authors and co-authors

In a decision from October 2017 the Expert Group on Scientific Misconduct in Sweden make some profound statements concerning whom or who of the authors can be held responsible for the scientific misconduct, the Expert Group makes the following assessment. To judge whether a case consist of misconduct or not is often difficult and take a lot of effort. An even more difficult task is to evaluate who can be held responsible.

France: Questionable journals and editors: a raising issue?

The European Code of Conduct on Research Integrity identifies, in addition to direct violations of the good research practices, a few examples of other unacceptable practices including: establishing or supporting journals that undermine the quality control of research (predatory journals).

International Integrity Networks: APRI and ARIN

As networks designed to bring together complementary expertise and resources around a common theme, both the Asia Pacific Research Integrity Network (APRI) and the African Research Integrity Network (ARIN) emerged in response to a need for exchanging ideas and information across a geographic region. Like ENRIO, these networks began with a small and dedicated group of individuals whose shared enthusiasm has contributed to a dynamic evolution.

European Network for Academic Integrity: ENAI

European Network for Academic Integrity (ENAI) is an association supporting higher education institutions to work together in the field of academic integrity. ENAI was established in May 2017 and so far there are 23 member institutions from 17 countries, 11 individual supporters and 3 affiliated networks.

Open access to research data and publications: The unintended consequences

Open access to scientific data and publications were the timely topics of two concurrent workshops held in Brussels on the 31st January and 1st February 2018. Both workshops explored the unintended consequences and potential ethical issues of open access, and looked at potential mitigating actions that might reduce these potentially negative consequences.

The Bonn PRINTEGER Statement: the organisational responsibility for research integrity 

The "Bonn PRINTEGER Statement: Working with research integrity – guidance for research performing organisations" was finalized by the members of the consensus team during the PRINTEGER European Conference on Research Integrity February 5-7, 2018 in Bonn, Germany. The members of the consensus team came from different fields and countries across Europe.

Austrian Agency for Research Integrity -  Symposium: Creating a culture of integrity

The Austrian Agency for Research Integrity celebrates its 10-years anniversary. In honor of this occasion the agency invites for a one-day symposium on the 10th of September 2018 into Palais Niederösterreich in Vienna. International as well as Austrian speakers will talk about challenges and opportunities of building more confidence in science but also in creating a culture of integrity within the research system.

PUBMET 2018 - The 5th Conference on Scholarly Publishing in the Context of Open Science

6th World Conference on Research Integrity
02-05 June 2019 in Hong Kong, Asia

The WCRI is the largest and most significant international conference on research integrity. Since the first conference in Lisbon in 2007, it has given researchers, teachers, funding agencies, government officials, journal editors, senior administrators, and research students opportunities to share experiences and to discuss and promote integrity in research. The conference is now a biennial event, and the University of Hong Kong and RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia are proud to co-organize the next world conference.
