Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting 2018

Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting 2018
Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting 2018
At the 30th Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting in Geneva, government representatives discussed a series of bold proposals, including 100 per cent smoke free public spaces; a 20 per cent sugar tax on drinks; immunisations for all girls aged 9-13 against cervical cancer by 2025; one-stop crisis centres for victims of gender-based violence, and the creation of a Commonwealth Evidence Base for Cancer Control; and an acceleration of universal health coverage (UHC).

UHC will help to protect Commonwealth citizens from challenges such as non-communicable diseases (NCDs) - the central focus of this year’s health summit - which currently affect more than 400 million people across the 53 member countries.

The theme of the meeting was: 'Enhancing the global fight against NCDs: raising awareness, mobilising resources and ensuring accessibility to universal health coverage’

Addressing a packed room of ministers, delegates and observers, the Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, said, “This year’s meeting enables us to focus on fully playing our part as the Commonwealth in mobilising to tackle the growing crisis of NCDs, which is causing devastation in all our member countries, and affecting with particular severity Small Island Developing States and low and middle-income countries.”

WHO Director-General has called for all countries to take action to help end the suffering caused by cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer as long as it is prevented with HPV vaccination, detected early, and managed effectively. Prevention and early treatment are highly cost-effective. Worldwide however, cervical cancer remains one of the gravest threats to women’s lives, and globally, one woman dies of cervical cancer every two minutes. This suffering is unacceptable, and cannot continue. In recognition of this, WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus today made a global call for action towards the elimination of cervical cancer.

Diet, Nutrition, Physical Activity and Cancer: a Global Perspective

Diet, Nutrition, Physical Activity and Cancer: a Global Perspective
The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) Network is a leading global authority on the links between diet, nutrition and physical activity, and cancer prevention and survival. Building on the landmark First and Second Expert Reports - published in 1997 and 2007 respectively - WCRF International embarked on the Continuous Update Project (CUP). During this decade-long project, scientific research from around the world was continually added to the CUP’s unique database, which is held and systematically reviewed by a team of scientists at Imperial College London.
The Third Expert Report, Diet, Nutrition, Physical Activity and Cancer: a Global Perspective, brings together their conclusions and presents the most up to date, reliable and evidence-based cancer prevention advice currently available.

The report contains updated evidence on the links between diet, nutrition and physical activity exposures and the risk of 17 cancers organised both according to exposures, and by cancer type. The report also includes updated evidence on five cancer sites which have not been assessed since 2007 - mouth, pharynx and larynx; nasopharyngeal; lung; cervical; and skin cancers.

It was a sea of elegant red at the Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel, recently, as corporate companies, sponsors, and socialites made a fashionable entrance to celebrate The Heart Foundation of Jamaica’s annual event, Go Red for Women.

The global initiative, which was originally created by the American Heart Association in 2004, to raise health awareness of heart disease and stroke in women, has been acknowledged in Jamaica for over five years and has seen scores of local ladies rallying around the worthy cause. Those in attendance walked the red carpet in fascinating and other fabulous trends, received gift bags from Hunt’s and Jergens, made themselves feel at home in Ashley Furniture Homestore’s life size living room suite and enjoyed the spirits and non alcoholic beverages from CPJ, all before entering the marvellously decorated Venetian room.
