Kelly: "I am ecstatic that we are able to add someone with Daniel's extensive legal experience, positive energy and professionalism to our executive team." Feig, who spent the last five years in Hattiesburg after stints at Alabama & Arkansas State, "After thoroughly researching this opportunity and completing the interview process, I am convinced the University is on a path to future growth and success behind the visionary leadership of Dr. Kelly and his staff. Likewise, the athletic department is poised for unprecedented success as a new member of the Big South Conference, and I look forward to being a member of the team." Full presser next Tuesday. (link)
APR: The overall four-year mark is up to 983 as Baseball, FB & WBB all gain two points, respectively (975, 964, 982). MBB up one to 967. Also of note, "The single-year rates for HBCUs have improved 34 points in the last five years alone, reaching 962 during 2016-17. All other schools increased 5 points during that time, from 979 to 984." Only 35 programs with four-years under 930, eight of which will get penalties & lack of post-season access. Tons more. (link - release, link - full data report); More trend lines via the NCAA Research's Twitter feed. (link); USA Today's Berkowitz notes nearly $350K worth of bonuses for Arizona State AD Anderson, Florida State's Wilcox's $17K, a list of HCs who also get incentives due to APR scores. (link)
The FBI agent at the center of the MBB-FBI developments is under investigation for the misappropriation of federal funds used in the probe, leading to more static around the already noisy process. Another new part of the story is 'Jill,' another FBI agent who posed as an aide to the lead FBI agent & took over the operation when 'Jeff DeAngelo' exited the scene. All part of new details from Yahoo's Fischer & Wertheim. Boston College law professor Cassidy: "The question for the government: can we structure the case so we can prove this without this guy, without putting him on the stand? If so, you can argue to the judge that it’s not relevant. If not, it’s a challenge because he’ll be impeached and cross-examined. He’s a liar and a thief. Why should you believe him?" (link); SI's McCann digs with some analysis, "Dawkins may be able to show that undercover agents deceptively groomed him to become a hustler, but he probably wouldn’t be able to show that he was coerced or forced by those agents." (link)
Northwestern AD Phillips named '2018 AD of the Year' by SportsBusiness Journal at last night's annual awards show in New York City. (link); Yahoo's Thamel visited the Wildcats' new Ryan Fieldhouse & Walter Athletics Center, "I’ve been in virtually every football building of note in America, witnessing all the Ferrari leather, barber chairs and nap rooms from Clemson to Eugene to Tuscaloosa. In terms of size, spectacle and spending, Northwestern has sprinted past the biggest names in the facilities arms race." Further, Thamel believes the only comparison is the Dallas Cowboys complex in Frisco. Phillips toured 64 facilities to narrow down the best elements for NU & keeping FB HC Fitzgerald from Michigan a couple of years ago proved to be the spark. More. (link
A local Circuit Court Judge ruled Louisville deliberately avoided open records requests connected to the MBB saga & must now conduct a "diligent" search to fulfill the process. The records look to also include correspondence with & records from The Compliance Group's Smrt. Judge Willett: "The University has consistently refused to produce those records based on an unreasonably narrow interpretation of Dr. Hasselbacher's open records request. Moreover, the University has never articulated a plausible legal basis for denying Dr. Hasselbacher access to those records. Under the circumstances, the University's conduct appears to be nothing more than a deliberate attempt to conceal information that it considers to be embarrassing and damaging to its reputation." (link); The expansion of Papa John's Cardinal Stadium that will be ready for kick this season will add around 6K total seats, less than the 10K originally announced. Former Senior Assoc. AD for Development Jurich says it was more about premium options & an aesthetically pleasing addition than simply a volume play. (link)
Big South Commish Kallander says he's "not generally in favor" of the push by the ACC to move to a 72-team MBB Tourney. Kallander continues by questioning which programs would benefit, also adds, "Now if there’s a way to structure an expansion to benefit the mid-majors. I’d be willing to look at that. I just don’t know what that would look like." ACC Senior Assoc. Commish for MBB Brazeau: "The question was simply put out there, How can more teams, not more of our teams — Saint Mary’s, Middle Tennessee State — is there a way, without adding days, adding weekends, is there a way to increase the number of teams?" (link)
The Big 12 hosted an interesting conversation yesterday on esports & its viability within the NCAA ecosystem was debated. Dallas Mavericks Owner Cuban's perspective, "The goals of the NCAA aren't necessarily in alignment with the mission of esports [...] I think League of Legends is more of a sport than golf." Commish Bowlsby thinks there's plenty of money to be made off the sport, but also points to Title IX gender balance issues, ultimately, "I think esports is an extraordinary phenomenon. I really do... I just think it's misaligned with traditional athletics." (link, link); More video of the panel here. (link)

Longtime Utah AD Hill will sit in the AD chair for the Utes for the last time next week, says seriously he still wants to get to the $20M mark in fundraising for upgrades to Rice-Eccles Stadium, "Part of it was me just saying I need to focus a little bit on my way out and I’ll do the best I can and then we’ll move on." University CIO Hess worked with Hill for a couple of decades, "There was never anything in his mind that wasn’t an action the next day. He coalesced people around an idea, and then boom, it happened. That’s quite a talent. It was fun to watch. He thought he could do anything. He thought he could take the university to where it needed to be. And he stuck with the university. He got all kinds of offers and he’d always analyze them. He just loved the place and cared about the place. We’re so glad he did." VP of University Relations Esplin notes how Hill was never satisfied with average & reveled in getting through hard times. (link)
"I’m still waiting for a really easy year. Those just don’t seem to happen for an athletic director." Never have truer words been spoken. It's from Montana AD Haslam as part of the spring tour for his Grizzlies as a FB HC change, down FB attendance & a Women's Soccer leadership shift due to some sketchy circumstances provided some challenges during the 17-18 campaign. There were certainly also highs, like MBB's journey to the Big Dance. Haslam also notes the importance of getting out & traveling as an AD, "you can get locked too much in your world and kind of hunker down into your bubble if you’re not careful." (link)
Kansas State AD Taylor with his latest 'Ask the AD' entry, says his Baseball search is focused on mainly 'Power 5' ACs & non-P5 HCs, indicates he would be "extra cautious" about moving FB game to Thursday or Friday nights, notes new turf for FB that's "going to feel a lot differently for the players because it's going to be softer and newer." Taylor also touches on his interest in getting Nebraska on more schedules. (link)
ADs & HCs better start understanding how to use the 'mute' button on Twitter, not the 'block' option. Why? A Federal Judge's ruling that President Trump was violating the First Amendment by blocking some followers of his Twitter account could have far-reaching effects on leadership's use of social media. Awful Announcing's Bucholtz: "Considering that NCAA coaches and athletic directors at public universities are state employees (and some of the best-paid state employees), and that their Twitter accounts are also ways to communicate to the public about their position (something detailed early on in that decision), it would seem likely that this ruling would suggest they might wind up in First Amendment trouble by blocking critics." (link)
Listen: CBS legal analyst Ford is the latest guest on Conversations on College Athletics with 2D Consulting's Durham. Ford talks about the recent SCOTUS-PASPA ruling, "You’ll see a new significant layer of regulation on gambling that will possibly provide protections to allay the concerns of college athletic directors. […] Athletics Directors will want to know how all parties involved with gambling can help each other through communication to stay in front of any potential problems that could arise." (link); LSU AVC & Executive Director for the Cox Communications Center for Student-Athletes Miles chats with 1.Question co-host @TaiMBrown on his unique role reporting to the Vice Provost of Academic Support & Review, as well as a dotted line to the AD. Miles: "Our purpose when setting up this reporting structure was to promote and preserve the integrity of the academic recruitment and retention process. […] We try to be the premier provider of transformative Student-Athlete support services, recognizing that there is a transformation that happens once they enter school." More. (link)
It's Personnel: Washington State AD Chun hires Ohio State Assoc. Dir. of Development Straub as Senior Assoc. AD of the Cougar Athletic Fund. The pair worked together at OSU from 2010-2012. (link); Florida extends Track & Field HC Holloway through 2028. (link); Wisconsin Swimming & Diving HC Suguiyama will start with a $150K salary in his three-year deal, which is 34% more than his predecessor made. Also of note: "UW Athletics is projected to spend $1.5 million more on salaries and fringe benefits than it budgeted in the 2017-18 school year but is on pace for an overall surplus." (link); There have been 54 HC openings in Division I MBB since last season, with four still open: Alabama A&M, Chicago State, Delaware State and Detroit. The complete list of the coaching carousel shown here. (link); Newly named New Mexico State Chancellor Arvizu and President Floros will make $500K and $450K, respectively, "with provisions that require and reward future growth of the student body, research portfolio, and overall revenues of NMSU." (link); Disney/ABC's Rosenblum will exit after less than two years as Prez of Business Ops (link); Cox Media will shut down its sports verticals come June 30, including Land of 10, SEC Country, and DieHards. Dawg Nation survives. The Dallas Morning News' Baby wonders if "the disappearing college jobs over the last 18 mos. have anything to do w/ the lack of access imposed by schools." (link, link)
CT Post runs a profile of UConn AD Benedict, who seems to be staying quite calm amid some difficulties making a MBB HC change. Benedict on being a first-time AD, "I worked for a lot of good people and spent a lot of time as a No. 2. I was involved in a lot of different decisions in a lot of different places. But until you’re the one who’s making it, it has a different effect on you both personally and professionally. From that standpoint, I own what has happened (with Ollie and Dan Hurley). I don’t take it lightly. It impacts a lot of people’s lives. That’s the tough side of this business." On his hire of new HC Hurley, "You know what was difficult? The waiting. While I hadn’t met him yet, I had a really strong belief in the research I had done that Dan was the right person. But it took time to even have that first sit-down." (link)
Pushing forward Virginia FB is clearly a top priority for new Cavs AD Williams & UVa FB HC Mendenhall notes, "She’s standing there and talking to the moms of these young men, basically saying that they can do anything. And that she’s an example. Right at the beginning, Carla said, 'I’m here to help, and I love being involved in recruiting. Use me.'" Williams: "We know that in order to get people in the stands, the product on the field has to be attractive. So, how do you do that? You have to have better players, and you have to be able to attract better players. […] I love recruiting. I love talking to parents. I love talking to prospects. And I’ve done a lot of that." (link)
Facility Updates: The construction of the Left Field Lofts at Mississippi State's Dudy Noble Field is underway. (link); Check out this time lapse video of the first part of renovations to the Arkansas FB weight room. (link); The State Board of Higher Ed in North Dakota was busy this week, also granting approval to UND to fundraise $35M for the second phase of the school's High Performance Center. An unused golf course could provide up to $8M toward the goal. Phase two includes "athletic support spaces: offices, meeting rooms, locker rooms, weight rooms, nutrition room, athletic therapy rooms and other training-related spaces that support UND's student athletes and UND's ROTC student." TV Rights Notes: TV scheduling expert Sarzyniak writes on how the UFC addition for ESPN & WWE catch for Fox could impact some college FB. Sarzyniak wonders if the UFC deal will help or hinder a potential run at the Mountain West. (link); Outkick the Coverage's Travis notes the paths forward for both ESPN & Fox, as well as combat programming now living under the Disney umbrella. In closing, "Fox chose the WWE over the UFC because its superstars don’t lose unexpectedly and cripple the next pay-per-view buy. ESPN chose the UFC." (link); ESPN's Rovell: "The Fertittas presented to investors two years ago that the new UFC TV rights would be worth $450 million a year. Sources say officials at WME-IMG, which bought the UFC for $4B, never believed it would be that high. But $300M a year is a significant drop." (link); Former Fox Sports executive Crakes: "Not talked about enough: Major sports media properties (WWE & UFC) become available & tech media passes, again. In fact, so far only established media (ESPN & Turner) acquiring high quality sports content for digital platforms exclusively on a scaled basis. Counter Narrative." (link); Awful Announcing's Koo believes ESPN+ is giving ESPN some good things to talk about after a run of negative press. (link)
The NFL & Fanatics ink a 10-year deal for the manufacturing of all NFL fan merchandise starting in 2020. The only items not part of the pact are jerseys & on-field swag. 'Why Leaders Don't Always Make Great Managers' comes from the perspective of Priceline & Upside Founder Walker. Thesis: "Management is the art of accomplishing objectives through others, and that’s different from leadership, which is more the art of inspiring others and getting them to want to do things. I’ve never thought of myself as a particularly good manager. A manager’s job is to develop the people they work with. It’s about process. I’m not a strong process person. I’m more an out-of-the-box guy. I’ve always hired managers to do the job of management, which is no insult at all. It’s not beneath me in any way. It’s just not my strength. Create things? I’m your guy. Solve unusual problems? Maybe. Dream up whole new ways to approach things? I’m your guy. Manage? Not so much." Also, I love this takeaway, "My style is not to perpetuate a false illusion that you work for me. You work for you. You get up every day and you come in here because you want to be here. We’re not having a discussion about who’s in charge. If you have a better idea, great. Let’s hear it." More. (link)
