World Hypertension Day May 2018

World Hypertension Day 2018
May 17th was World Hypertension Day, an awareness day to support the efforts to prevent, detect and control hypertension. The theme this year was "Know your numbers", with the aim to raise awareness about high blood pressure.

Hypertension or High Blood Pressure (HBP) is when your blood pressure, which is classified as the force of the blood flowing through your blood vessels, is consistently too high. Certain hereditary and physical traits and lifestyle choices can put you at a greater risk for developing high blood pressure. Some of the hereditary and physical traits which are risk factors for hypertension include family history, age, gender and race. Lifestyle choices or modifiable risk factors include a lack of physical activity, an unhealthy diet, particularly one high in sodium, and being overweight or obese.

Denmark, Trans Fat Ban Pioneer: Lessons for Other Countries

Denmark, Trans Fat Ban Pioneer: Lessons for Other Countries
Denmark pioneered the banning of industrially-produced trans fats in food in 2003, becoming a trailblazer for other European governments determined to protect their public’s health from this heart disease-causing threat.

"We currently have seven countries in the European region that have a legal ban on trans fat. And it all started with Denmark," said Dr. João Breda, head of the WHO European Office for Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases.

Gender and NCDs: Benign Neglect in the Face of a Gaping Window of Opportunity

Gender and NCDs
NCDs are finally having their moment. Diabetes is very much in the public eye from Dhaka to Dakar, the global ‘epidemic’ of obesity is currently the subject of numerous television shows, the row over sugar sweetened beverage taxes and alcohol unit taxes the stuff of parliamentary debates and public information and misinformation battles.

With so much public and political attention on NCDs, 2018 could be a turning point in societal and political approaches to the epidemic. In September the United Nations will host a High-level Meeting on NCDs. Dr Tedros, the head of WHO, has invested considerable political capital in the event, among other things by launching a high-level independent Commission to make recommendations to inform the negotiations on the meeting’s Political Declaration. Expectations are understandably high.

“Yet against this backdrop of cautious optimism, one issue must give cause for concern – the deafening silence on the issue of gender in the discussion.”

Short Survey: Which NCD Groups Do You Work With?

Prevnt20 Survey
The theme of this year’s World No Tobacco Day is tobacco’s impact on cardiovascular health. For Prevent20, it’s a reminder that the policies we support to reduce tobacco-related cancer also help to reduce tobacco-related cardiovascular, lung, diabetes, and a host of other diseases. We share the same goal.

By collaborating with other non-communicable disease organizations, such as heart, lung, and diabetes, we can amplify our message and create a strong, unified voice to advocate for tobacco tax. In this survey, we are assessing the extent to which you are already collaborating with these organizations and to evaluate whether Prevent20 can help to support these efforts.  Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey.
