May 22, 2018 Joint Committee on Carbon Reduction Capitol Hearing Room F Noon-2 pm.  Oregon state Senate President Peter Courtney and House Speaker Tina Kotek formed a Joint Committee on Carbon Reduciton to meet ahead of fhe 2019 Legislative Session to work on climate change legislation.  Shilpa Joshi, Coalition Direcotr at Renew Oregon says:
It is our first opportunity to assert our commitment to this work by packing the room. We need to show ... how serious we are about passing a strong, stringent cap and invest policy in 2019. We will hear from DEQ's director [Dept. of Environmental Quality], a researcher from OCCRI [Oregon Climate Change Research Institute], and an economist from Resources for the Future. There will not be a chance for public comment.

It's also our first chance to learn more about the Speaker and President's plan for the next 7 months of committee meetings.
It's easiest for us here in Salem to get to the Capitol and our presence at the hearing willl show our reseolve, but If you can't get there, you can watch it live at this link: https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/citizen_engagement/Pages/Legislative-Video.aspx   Scroll to the Joint Committee on Carbon Reduction, Hearing Room F.  Click on the video icon.  The audio will come on once the committee members are settled.

June 25, 2018 Discussion  of Our Renewable Future: Laying the Path for One Hundred Percent Clean Energy

What might a 100% renewable future look like? Which technologies will play a crucial role in our energy future? What challenges will we face in this transition? And how can we make sure our new system is just and equitable? Energy expert Richard Heinberg and scientist David Fridley explore these questions in their book Our Renewable Future: Laying the Path for One Hundred Percent Clean Energy. This clear-eyed and urgent guide was chosen as one of GreenBiz’s six Best Sustainability Books of 2016.

Join us in a discussion of this book on Monday, June 25th from 6:30 to 8:30 at 945 Columbia St. NE. Simply read the book online for free at ourrenewablefuture.org or purchase it and come prepared to share your thoughts. We welcome all people interested in the topic.

Please let us know if you plan to come. RSVP or request more informtion at  Coordinators@350salemor.org   Put Book Discussion in Subject Line.

TAKE ACTION

Comment on FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) Review of Pipeline Permit Process For the first time in almost two decades FERC is undertaking a review of its gas pipeline and related facility permitting process.  This will affect the Jordan Cove LNG terminal in Coos Bay and 230 mile Pacific Connector Pipeline (more on that below) as well as dozens of pipeline projects in other states. It is urgent that we make our voices heard.  The deadline for submitting public comments is June 18, 2018.

As our friends at Rogue Climate, leaders in the campaign to stop Jordan Cove, said, "Many pipeline companies are using this opportunity to comment on FERC’s process saying it should be less time consuming and costly for applicants, so we must urge FERC to reform its pipeline review process to ensure that—above all else—the public interest is protected."

The FERC review will consider 1) its methodology for determining need; 2) use of eminent domain and landowner intereests; 3) evaluation of environmental impact; 4) efficiency and effectiveness of certification process.

We don't have to be experts to comment; we do need to tell FERC they must protect the public interest.   Rogue Climate has put together a great guide for commenting, including what the review is for, talking points, and step-by-step instructions for submitting comments online.  Here it is:
https://www.rogueclimate.org/submit_a_comment_to_ferc_process

Along with gas pipeline opponents all over the country let's flood FERC with comments.  The comment deadline is June 18, 2018.

No LNG - No Pipeline - No Fracked Gas in Oregon

Jordan Cove LNG Export terminal and Pacific Connector Pipeline would be Oregon's biggest source of climate changing emissions, but we can stop it before it starts.

State and federal agencies will soon start holding hearings and taking public comments on permits, easements and environmental review.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Agency is beginning  a review of its pipeline permitting process and will take comments on the use of eminent domain, climate change impacts and other topics (see above).

We need to be ready to show up and to flood these agencies with comments.

Portland Business Alliance and Oregon Business & Industry have spoken out in support of Jordan Cove, but we know many of their member businesses are on our side. We want them to take a stand to Stop Jordan Cove.  Join us on May 31 for the people-to-business postcard party described above.

We need volunteers to spread the word, educate our community and get Salem involved to stop Jordan Cove:
Contact  Coordinators@350salemor.org
Or use our Volunteer sign-up at   https://350salemor.org/contact/volunteer/

The Pacific Connector Pipeline is a proposed 229-mile pipeline that would take fracked* gas sourced from the Rocky Mountains or Canada from Malin near Klamath Falls to Coos Bay, where it would be liquefied and exported from a giant new facility, the Jordan Cove LNG Export terminal. This project would become the largest source of climate pollution in Oregon and would undermine action to meet goals to protect our climate and transition to renewable energy.
*(Most natural gas produced in the US and Canada is produced by fracking and this is increasing as conventional sources are depleted.)

The Governor and Oregon Agencies have the authority to deny permits and stop this project. Learn more from the No LNG Exports Coalition  http://www.nolngexports.org/
Check out Oil Change International's life-cycle analysis of all the greenhouse gas emissions that would come from this project:  http://priceofoil.org/2018/01/11/jordan-cove-lng-and-pacific-connector-pipeline-greenhouse-gas-emissions/

Tell Governor Kate Brown we need her to stand up for Oregon and for the climate and stop this project for good/

Kalama Methanol Refinery
After the defeat of coal, oil and LNG terminals on the Columbia, this project would be another insult to the Columbia, bringing fracked gas to be refined in Kalama, WA to produce methanol for shipment to China for manufaturing plastics.  The first Environmental Impact Statement was overturned by a state heariungs board for negecting to cover the climate change impacts of this energy intensive project. An analysis by the  Stockholm Environmental Institute indicates that these impacts would be very large.

Jasmine Zimmer-Stuckey of Columbia Riverkeeper recently pointed out another good reason to stop this project:  the world is already awash in plastic waste and China's decision to drastically reduce imports of recycled plastic for reprocessing means it will only get worse.

Comments are being taken now on the new Environmental Impact Statement.  Columbia Riverkeeper has more information and links for submitting comments here.

IN SOLIDARITY

Poor People's Campaign
350.org has endorsed the Poor People's Campaign "because it lifts up the voices and deepens the leadership of those most affected by systemic racism, poverty, the war economy, and ecological devastation and it is working towards building unity across movements.

At this time of intensifying political, economic, and moral crisis, with the lives of the most vulnerable under vicious attack, people in growing numbers around the country are fighting back for their lives, communities and deepest values. And we are deeply committed to supporting the struggles of the most vulnerable and standing in solidarity with these communities...Any actions against the fossil fuel industry, for climate justice, and a fossil free world that 350 groups organize will be incorporated as moral revival action. In order for your actions to be part of this important effort you will need to connect with the local PPC chair in your state. Here is the list of state chairs. If you have trouble getting in touch with a Chair you can email Laurel Ashton at: laurel@poorpeoplescampaign.org.
