AU Journalism Award winners announced
The Journalism Division recognized its top journalism students in April, inducting nine new members into Kappa Tau Alpha (KTA), the National Honors Society, and announcing a new suite of awards that recognize and reward quality news projects by undergraduate journalism majors, as well as presenting the Rodger Streitmatter Journalism Award for Excellence to Ambar Pardilla ('18 SOC).

Alum wins Virginia newspaper awards
The Virginia Press Association recognized work by Fallon Forbush, a 2018 Interactive Journalism program alumnus, as some of the best the Commonwealth’s newspapers had to offer in 2017. His news writing and photography as a reporter with the Alexandria-based Connection Newspapers was honored during a banquet in Richmond last month.

The White House Correspondents Dinner through the eyes of a student
Journalism student Mawal Sidi attended the 2018 WHCA dinner as a guest of CNN along with Lauren Lumpkin ('18 SOC). CNN also gave Sidi and Lumpkin a tour of its headquarters, where they met journalists and other CNN staff.

Journalism Prof. Sullivan, students' work published in The Post
Professor John Sullivan's story on the decline in the shootings of unarmed people appeared in The Washington Post earlier this month —with reporters Angela Swartz, Samuel Northrop, Kate McCormick and Matthew Bernardini contributing.
Swartz, Northrop and Bernardini are current graduate students in the journalism program. McCormick is a former Investigative Reporting Workshop intern and now a post-graduate fellow with IRW and FRONTLINE.

After #MeToo, AU journalists explore 'New Boundaries'
NBCWashington.com, the media partner for the spring class in convergent journalism, posted the students' semester-long project exploring MeToo for millennials. Called The New Boundaries, Professor Amy Eisman's class collaborated with NBC Washington and Professor Jeremiah Patterson's class for the movement's effect on college students.

Panel highlights investigative journalism, women in media
Journalism Professor Jane Hall welcomed Katharine Weymouth, granddaughter of Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham, and Washington Post investigative reporter Kimbriell Kelly to discuss the importance of the Oscar-nominated 2017 film, The Post, which highlights the tremendous impact investigative reporting can have.

Class visits WTOP, hears from alums about working in radio
On the last day of class, Professor Jill Olmsted took her undergraduate radio class to WTOP radio. They spoke with Mike McMearty, director of news and programming, about how the award-winning station works in gathering radio news, doing podcasts, online videos and the digital news team.
Students also heard from WTOP reporters Megan Cloherty (an SOC alum) and Kate Ryan about their passion for the radio news business, the pressure of deadlines and making a living.
Other SOC alums who work at WTOP include Senior Digital Editor Colleen Kelleher, Digital Editor Teta Alim and Assistant Editor Liz Anderson (all are former students of Professor Olmsted), and SOC alums News Director Julia Ziegler, Ditial Editor Omama Altaleb, Editor Judy Taub and reporter Neal Augenstein.

- Journalism students Courtney Rozen and Riddhi Sarkar both won 2018 scholarships of $3,000 each from the American News Women's Club.They were honored along with anchor Ann Curry at an awards dinner at the National Press Club on May 9. Riddhi is a rising senior in journalism; Courtney just graduated and was editor-in-chief of The Eagle.
- Journalism Professor Sherri Williams worked with Melissa Harris-Perry and students to document black college students’ experiences. Read an overview from Harris-Perry and check out the Black on Campus program, where Williams is a director and Lauren Lumpkin ('18 SOC) is a fellow.
