Clean2Antarctica Diary - entry no. 2

Oh Meghan... 😍

While Meghan and Harry were preparing for their big day, I was filming my boss's wife in the shower. True story.

All three of us are taking cold showers every morning to prepare for the cold, and of course it had to make it into the weekly video update (which so far is Dutch only).
But what's really on my mind is Meghan's dress. Because I'm responsible for our crowdfunding campaign with a goal of €300.000, which is how her dress cost. There are people who are outraged at a € 40 million wedding that upholds the spectacle of a former colonial empire. But then again, the production of 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' cost € 15 million more and we both know what you're more excited about. Maybe there's nothing wrong with a real-life princess love story (still looking for my own).

But that still leaves me with the task of raising Meghan's dress. All of yesterday I broke my head on how to communicate why it's worth donating to us. And I want to be honest: Yes we have sponsors who finance the expedition, so reaching the South Pole is almost (but not yet!) possible. But that's not the end goal. The goal is for everyone to discover that throwing something away is a waste. Waste of your creativity. Waste of your money. Waste of your energy.

On our website I want to find the simplest words possible, but here I can just tell you: We are on a mission to boost the transition to a circular economy, by inspiring individuals and companies to think and act differently. The reason I'm so excited about this project is because it cuts through all the crap of who is to blame for sustainability. It's not the government or big businesses, it's you and me. And waste is not a problem but a huge opportunity. Not because by stopping to buy plastic packaging you have saved the oceans from plastic, but because when people take such a decision it starts a personal and societal movement that forces big changes. It helps people and it helps you to become accountable and realise that you can change things. It makes you put your money where your mouth is, and in my case deleting Facebook is one of the many spinoffs. That's what I'm working for. And for that we need money to turn this expedition into a much broader 'adventure for change'.

It is really, freaking difficult to explain what the mission is.  Because there is so much to say. After 5 months of refining texts I'm still not done. But I hope that it's clear enough for people to understand that this is worth their money.

So, my friend, will you take a moment to support Meghan's dress our mission to bring change?
Support now

I'm constantly being challenged and I learn a lot these days. For example that crowdfunding means asking people all the time to support you. So better support us now, because it is my job to ask you a few more times if you don't :-)

And since I don't have Facebook anymore, I get really happy if you answer this email with your thoughts and feedback. Even it's only two words! Maybe you have questions or suggestions about what I can write about next time.

If you want to follow more than my personal thoughts I suggest subscribing to our awesome Clean2Antarctica newsletter (in Dutch or English).
