After a disappointing weekend when all the Saturday fixtures were abandonned due to rain, with Belvoir in potentially winning positions in all three games, The current week could not have gone any better with 6 wins from 6 matches for the teams that have played so far. All reports and results are below.
Lets hope for a fine weekend and a continuation of the positive results !

First XI
Belvoir 164 all out (42.1) Notts Unity Casuals 79-6 (26)

Coming in at the early fall of the first wicket, an aggressive Olly Elson (21) was obviously keen to get on with it and smacked 3 excellent fours before Nadim Ghani (2-20) bowled him with a Jaffa.   The elegant Olly Clayfield (23) carried on the good work until he became one of three victims of wicket-keeper Jawad Burney.  Clayfield’s departure coincided with the introduction of Tayyab Khan (3-43) who wreaked havoc with Belvoir’s Middle order.  However, a pumped-up Phil Irvine (46) took the fight to the bowlers with a counter-punching performance that include 2 huge sixes tonked over wide long-on.  His eighth wicket partnership with a dogged Jamie Gilbertson added 40 invaluable runs and a second bonus point before he fell to the tricksy Wasim Karim (3-22).
When the Casuals batted Danny Gibson and Joe Bottomley shared the first two wickets for not many before the Karim brothers, Wasim and Rahim, mounted a fightback.  This was short lived thanks to second change Irvine who took 2-12 in five miserly overs.  Bottomely (3-37) then reduced the Casuals to 63-6 aided by a fabulous one-handed catch by Olly Clayfield diving well to his right at point.  Rahul Saggar and Shahzad Ahmed blocked out another seven overs before it started to rain.  It didn’t stop – match abandoned.

Third XI

Lambley Village 1st XI 260-8 (45) Belvoir 130-3 (25)

Robbie won the toss on a green looking early season wicket and elected to field first.

Belvoir started well with Sam Jepson-Rivers and Oliver Poole (U13 - making his senior Saturday debut) restricting the scoring. Oliver took his first Belvoir wicket with the last ball of his first spell – well held at first slip by Mark Ebb.

Olivia Gilbertson (also U13 making her senior Saturday debut) continued to apply the pressure and also took her first Belvoir wicket with the last ball of her first spell, a sharp legside stumping by Chris Bealby.

The Lambley middle order then decided to cut loose and on a small ground the boundaries started to be hit more frequently. Belvoir continued to work hard in the field and Tim Gilbertson took a towering catch on the boundary off Sam. Catching well obviously runs in the family as Olivia took a great ‘over the shoulder’ catch off Oliver’s bowling as he finished with 3 for 39 off 10.(1 Maiden)

Olivia also returned for a second spell and finished with 2 for 34 off 8 (1 maiden).

Lambley finished 260 -8 off their 45 overs.

Chasing their score Chris Bealby and Sam fell early whilst Mark Ebb 55 batted well before holing out at mid on.  Steve Cartledge (26 n/o) and Tim Gilbertson (7 n/o) had Belvoir ahead of the required run rate before the rain ended proceedings with Robbie assuring the opposition captain that “we would have knocked them off!”

Belvoir finished 130-3 off 25.

Belvoir 102-8 (16)  Thorpe Arnold 100-7 (16)

Belvoir edge Thorpe Arnold in thriller

On a beautiful Tuesday evening, eleven men of the vale made their way to Thorpe Arnold looking to build on a winning start Stamford the previous week. Having won the toss and elected to bat Sam Penford and Phil Irvine strolled out to the middle to begin the innings only for the latter to make the return journey early, bowled for 3. Irvine's dismissal brought Matt Lyon to the crease on debut for Belvoir and with some lusty blows got the scoreboard moving. Lyon was ably supported by Penford who ran well between the wickets, until he ran Lyon out for 24, the first of three run outs. With a large and slow outfield boundaries proved difficult to come by but Aled King (11) and Sam Jepson-Rivers (12) kept the scoreboard moving with Penford who eventually departed LBW for a patient 34. A few lusty blows from captain King meant Belvoir finished 102-8; a very competitive if not large score.

Belvoir took the field knowing a strong showing would be required if they were to defend their total but unfortunately Jepson-Rivers appeared to be on a different page as he failed to pitch the majority of deliveries in his opening over. It can therefore be described as good fortune that one such full toss was hit with incredible power to Lyon at mid-off whom the ball appeared to strike in the chest but stick anyway. Jepson-Rivers continued his knack of taking wickets in his next over where he bowled the Thorpe Arnold number three who offered no shot giving Rivers the excellent figures of 2-19 and providing Belvoir the good start they required. Another debutante Liam Probert (1-20) kept things tight along with Irvine (2-17). The Belvoir fielding left a lot to be desired with multiple run out chances missed and wicket keeper Chris Bealby managed to get struck in the head by a lifting ball from Probert. Irvine should get a particular mention for an exceptional penultimate over that included 2 wickets and a run out off his own bowling to give Daniel Gibson a massive 13 runs to play with off the final over. 7 off the first two deliveries swung things back the home teams way but Gibson was ultimately able to keep his nerve and secure a 2 run victory for the Belvoir side.

MOM - Phil Irvine
DOD - Chris Bealby for deciding his head was better to stop the ball than his gloves.

Bottesford U13 56 all out (13.2) Belvoir U13 62-0 (5.5)

A trip across the A52 to the local rivals saw Olivia Gilbertson and Sammy Hardy open the bowling as Bottesford looked to take advantage of the relatively small boundaries. Sammy finished with 1 for 7 as Jack Hall (1 for 10) and Will Creed (2 for 2) took over from where the attack started – with Sammy and Jack also taking safe catches. Champagne moment in the field – Arthur Ridout’s diving stop on the mid on boundary!

Sam McCarthy and Oliver Poole (2 for 2) continued to put the Bottesford batsmen to the sword backed up by Jack Hall and Tommy Bealby (wkt keeper) creating a couple of sharp run outs! Dan Wade and Kyle Polzin (1 for 0) finished off the tailenders and Bottesford ended 56 all out.

This did not look to be a challenging target and Tommy (37 retired not out) and Will (25 not out) made light work of the bowling. Tommy hit three 6s and three 4s whilst Will weighed in with one 6 and three 4s to complete the victory in 5.5 overs.

A good all round performance from the Belvoir juniors!

Caythorpe (Notts) U13 93-10 (17.3) Belvoir U13 141-6 (18) (Cup 1st round)

First round of the Cup and Belvoir made the trip north of the Trent to Caythorpe.

Losing the toss Caythorpe put Belvoir in to bat.

Belvoir started quickly but lost 2 quick wickets – Liam Tew (9) hitting two 4s.  Jacob Marshall-Taylor (18) and Will Creed (36 retired not out) settled down punishing the bad balls and frequently rotating the strike. Jacob hit two 4s and one 6 whilst Will hit one 6 and six 4s.

Sammy Hardy (26) and Oliver Poole (19) were in next continuing the momentum with Sammy hitting five 4s and Oliver three 4s. Jack Hall (11 including two 4s) and Olivia Gilbertson (2 not out) saw out the full 18 overs as Belvoir posted 141 for 6. That seemed a big score albeit with short boundaries!

Olivia and Liam opened the bowling and got amongst the wickets straight away. Olivia finished with 2 for 6 (both bowled) and Liam 1 for 8 (Liam also bowled their number 2 batsman off a no ball for 0!!!! – could have been costly as he went on to hit 55 not out).

Sammy, Oliver and Will kept the pressure on and Jack Hall came on with a blistering 3 over spell taking 3 for 8. Dan Wade kept it tight at the end and Eddie Marshall bowled 1.3 overs taking 2 for 3 on debut for the U13s – one of the wickets a great piece of glove work and quick thinking from Tommy Bealby to stump their number 10 batsman.

Fantastic team performance, a lot of diving in the field (body on the line fielding) – supporting each other in the field. Caythorpe finished 93 for 9 (batsman 11 did not bat due to illness).

Belvoir march on to Round 2 of the Cup – and we only played with 10 players!

Belvoir U12 253 (net)  Ellerslie U12 227 (net)

A chilly evening at the BCG saw Belvoir batting first. Arthur (15) and Sam (5) got us off to a good start .The next pair of Ollie and Zach batted steadily against some tidy bowling. We were probably below par at halfway but Charlie and Thomas put on a net 20 for the third pairing and Zac (17) and Joe carried on the good work scoring 19 for their 4 overs.
We needed to bowl and field well and Arther 2-6 and Sam started us off well so that Ellerslie were always behind the clock. Zach 2-8 bowled very straight and was well supported by Ollie 1-17. At halfway, Ellerslie were only 3 runs behind Belvoir. Charlie 2-5 and Thomas kept the brakes applied and the final pair of bowlers ,Zac 0-7 and Joe 2-10 ensured a 26 run victory. Both Joe's wickets fell to alert and opportunistic stumpings from Arthur. It is good to see that we  have a promising bunch of junior wicket keepers in William (see U11 report) Zac and Arthur.

Belvoir U11 309 (net) Coddington & Winthorpe U11 250 (net) (Cup )

Belvoir batted first, first pair Arthur Rideout 22 and Thomas Thornton 39, got us of to a cracking start putting on 61runs from the bat, not just big hitting but taking the singles and quick 2's,  this onslaught put Coddington on the back foot.

Second pair of Tom Sanders 7 and Gus Hagger 10, keep the board ticking over.

Third pairing of Joesf Rideout 6 and Liam Polzin 0 ensured that Coddington did not get back into the game.

Final pair of William Thornton 13 and George Marshall 10 kept the pressure up on Coddington, giving us a net total of 309.

I must mention Coddington's 9 year old leg spinner Oliver Conneutt on his action and ability to spin the ball ( one to watch out for in the future I think).

Thomas Thornton opened the bowling for Belvoir and bowled the opener with a quick Yorker from his 2 overs, Gus Hagger bowled a very steady 2 overs giving the batsmen nothing to hit.

Then for the second match on the trot along came Josef Rideout taking 2 wickets from 2 overs for just a few and well backed up by Liam Pozlin who showed what he can do with the ball in his second over.

Tom Sanders first over was below his usually standards, again showed us what he is all about in his second over having his last balls just mm's over the middle stump. William Thornton was as usual was on the money from ball one and was unlucky to end up without any wickets in the column.

Bowling out the innings was the reliable George Marshall ( who gets better every time I see him) taking a wicket, and Arthur Rideout my go to finisher.

Tom sanders and William Thornton taking 2 catches in the field. The team was well marshalled by Arthur Rideout from behind the stumps and the more senior members.

A big thank you to scorers Anita and Gareth. Great team performance, roll on the next round.

Kinoulton U11 71-7 (16)  Belvoir U11 121-2 (16)

Kinoulton batted first, Thomas Thornton opened the bowling 2-0-9 and Tom Sanders 2-0-4 got us of to a good start, then came Gus Hagger 2-0-18, this a unusually expensive couple of overs from Gus( must have been the cold night) and in his first game for Belvoir Alfie White with a tidy spell of leg spin of 2-1-6, a good stumping from William Thornton down the leg side. Next up was James Diamond 2-1-12 again a good stumping from William, then the star of the show 8 year old Jesse Marshall-Taylor with figures of 2-3-4 bowled, catch from Alfie and again a third stumping from William T(look out Arthur he's after the glove job).Last pair was Liam Pozlin 2-0-13 and William Thornton 2-1-2 to close down the innings and leave Kinoulton on Net Total of 229.

The opening pair of Thomas Thornton 25 not out and Alfie White 12 not out got us on our way, second pairing of the star man Jesse Marshall-Taylor 4 but run out on the last ball of the fourth over(must work on our calling) and Liam Pozlin 2 not out ensured we stayed in front of the rate. Third pair of Tom Sanders who top scored with 30 not out (about time Tom) and Gus Hagger 6 not out, some great running from Gus to ensure we kept piling on the runs. Our final pairing of William Thornton 11 not out and James Diamond 3 not out(who just gets better with each match) saw us to a net total of 309 and a second victory in as many days.

Man of the Match is spilt between William Thornton, 3 stumpings, 2-1-2 and a 11 not out and Jesse Marshall-Taylor with a return of 2-3-4 from his spell.

Junior Focus
season to date

The juniors have managed to take advantage of the relatively dry start to this season with only one game having to be rearranged due to weather so far. We are benefiting from the hard work many of the juniors did over the winter at the Kings School nets – setting them up to hit the ground running when the season started. The winter coaching at Trent Bridge with Andy Pick (Notts CCC Bowling Coach) and with Paul Johnson (Notts CCC Batting Coach) has made a real difference too in how the players approach the game.

The U11s have got off to a winning start in their league with plenty of fixtures coming in the next few weeks. Paul Sanders (U11 coach) is working hard on Friday nights improving the younger members as each week seems to bring more new players to the BCG.

The U12s have had an encouraging couple of fixtures in a new format for the Newark League at this age group (pairs cricket – the same as U11 cricket). Again Chris Bealby (U12 coach) has been developing the players’ skills in training  which they can all take into the upcoming games.

The U13s are 100% from their 2 matches with all the players chipping in with runs and wickets. The fielding especially has been very pleasing to watch – again it must be down to Ryan Lewis’s Friday coaching sessions!

The U15s have won 1 / lost 1 with good contributions from many of the players with bat and ball.

A number of our juniors are continuing to play County and Sub-County representative cricket which Belvoir are glad to support as it further develops players in those county set ups.

From U13 the juniors can start to play adult cricket and U15s Aled King, Oscar Brady, Joe De’Ath and Kellan Poole have all continued to develop their cricket in the adult sides along with U14 Alex McNulty. With Belvoir playing Saturday (3 teams), Sunday and Tuesday League cricket there are plenty of opportunities for the teenagers to supplement their junior cricket with some adult cricket. Great experience.

A number of the U13s have made their senior debuts already this summer - Tommy Bealby, Olivia Gilbertson, Jonathan Hedley and Oliver Poole making valuable contributions. There are still more teenagers that have not played senior cricket yet this summer (due to weather, availability and injury) which leaves the club in a very healthy position as these youngsters are the future of the club.

Let’s hope the good weather continues, the players and coaches keep working hard and we all enjoy a great summer of junior cricket.

Up The (Junior) Belvoir!
