What a wonderful group of learners we have in our school this Term! Here's what we've been up to...

Coromandel Area School Cross Country.
Read on for more information about this day.

Kia Ora koutou,

Brrrrrr! Wrap up warm and get those hot water bottles out!  The cold snap is definitely here! In terms of school uniform, if you are at all struggling to get the correct jumper or jacket required for school, please let us know.  We do have ways to support our whanau to make sure our akonga are wrapped up warm for the coming months!

Last week we had all seasons in one day for our annual school Cross Country, and what a ‘real’ cross country it was!  The rain pelted down before it started, just in time to muddy the tracks more, and then it held off until students were getting back on the buses to return to school.  Over 190 students took part, and it was amazing to see the grit, determination, and fun that was had by students of all ages.

We had three students go forward to the Thames Valley Senior Cross Country competition, and they all did themselves and our school proud.  Alex Sowerby, Nakita Marx, and Brooke Teklenburg all gained results in the top 20 of their respective grades, with Brooke coming 9th in the Under 19 division.

This week I would like to highlight our third and final strategic goal for our kura.  This one is extremely important, as without it being effective, teaching and learning comes second best.

Strategic Goal Three: Well-being of students and staff. The three main targets that sit under this goal are:

  1. Improve culture of behaviour and learning through developing a positive sense of community, school & self in ALL learners (staff & students)

  2. Build leadership capability in both students and staff

  3. Support the enhancement of the ‘physical environment’ in and outside of the classroom

Next week, all whanau will be given a chance to voice their opinions on the first target above, when we send out a survey about building a positive culture for learning in the school.  This is part of being a PB4L School-Wide school (Positive Behaviour for Learning). We look forward to hearing your voice!

I would like to remind our whanau of our new initiative to hear more from you!  If you have any views about health and safety at our kura, or if you see a hazard or potential risk that you wish to inform us about, then please email our Health & Safety Officer on healthandsafety@coroarea.school.nz.

It was great to hear that we had a good turnout at the World Challenge parents meeting this week, and the students are buzzing about the chance to travel to India in June/July next year.  What an amazing opportunity for our akonga to see the world, and a big thank you must go to Whaea Toni Sinclair for leading this initiative.

Well, as the long weekend approaches, I hope you are all looking forward to having the extended time to spend with whanau.  Let’s hope the sunshine stays out! Thank you all for a great start to Term Two.

Koren Hopoi

Lion by Carter Hopoi
He slowly walks through the long golden field of tall grass.
Stepping silently.
His enormous thick mane sweeping side to side brushing up dust.
He creeps around in the shadows ready to pounce.
The sharp teeth ready for action, his stomach rumbling waiting for a big feed.
His muscly legs extend out fully.
With one great leap and immense chomp,
the frightened wildebeest falls and skids across the filthy fields of golden grass.
Once more a successful meal.
He celebrates with a thunderous roar.
Roar by Aaliyah Beere
She roars like a colossal earthquake.
She runs with the sand lashing at her powerful body.
She passes through the forest like a rat sneaking around.
I hear her claws digging into the ground and the slimy dribble splatting on the wet silky dirt.
I see the plants moving side to side like someone slow dancing with me standing there frightened with my teeth chattering.
Blake Olliff
Shivering cold when I wake up.
Having a milo to warm up.
White frozen grass makes me freeze.
Hoping no frost bite for me.
Winters coming, make sure you're warm!
Avriannah Jeffery
It is cold.
You're wrapped up in a blanket with hot milo.
Ice and snow everywhere.
You feel like an ice cube.
Cold but fun.
Skates and sled, people playing in the snow, fun but far too cold.
Shivering cold.
Coromandel Area School Cross Country
This exciting annual event was held on Friday 25th May at the Coromandel Golf Club in 'wintery' conditions.  Just as the last bus loaded with students left the school heading for the Coromandel Golf Club, the skies opened up and it teemed down, but within 15 minutes, the rain was all over and the students went on to have an awesome day.

At Coromandel Area School we work hard to provide a safe physical and emotional environment for our students, our staff and our community.  We are in the process of updating our documents and systems in school.
You will now be able to report a risk or hazard if you see something on the school grounds that is unsafe.
To do this you can either request a hard copy hazard reporting template from Karen in the office and once filled out, return back to her, or you can access the word document called 'hazard reporting template' from our website.  This document can then be emailed to healthandsafety@coroarea.school.nz
Some risks / hazard examples that you may report:
*slipperty floor while using the gym for after school sports
*nail sticking out of building
*front gate by hall damaged and needs repairs
*the bark on the junior playground needs to be raked and spread out evenly.
Please report what you see so that risks can be investigated as soon as possible.
Thank you for helping us make Coromandel Area School a safer place for everyone.
Emergency Contact Information
When enrolling at Coromandel Area School, parents / caregivers are asked to provide emergency contact information.  The person listed will be contacted in the event of a health or safety emergency if the parent / caregiver is unable to be contacted.  In some cases, this important information has not been provided and in other cases, this information may need updating, so I have enclosed a form to be returned to the office upon completion.
Thank you for your assistance.
National Simultaneous Storytime 2018
The National Simultaneous Storytime took place across Australia and New Zealand on 23rd May at 1.00 p.m.  Some lucky prirmary students from Coromandel enjoyed 'Hickory Dickory Dash' in the school library.
School Uniforms
If you have any items of school uniform, paticularly jackets or jerseys,  that your children no longer wear, can we please have them?  Quite often we have students who forget items of uniform, have been unable to dry uniform due to wet weather, or have an 'incident' occur while at school.
Please drop any uniform into Mrs Morrissey in the office.
A big thank you in advance.
Kia ora Koutou
In Kiwi Can we have been focussed on resolving conflict and during one of our activities, the students were partnered up and had to get an object across the room, and in true Kiwi fashion, we added a challenge.  The tamariki could not use their hands and had to come up with other strategies or other parts of their bodies to use.
We have also been looking at Fairplay and in particular, sportsmanship.  What does it mean to play fair?
*taking turns
*playing by the rules
*playing with respect and accepting the outcome of the game
Sometimes we don't get a turn or win the game, but it is important not to get upset and to give it another go and try again next time.
Our tamariki have told us that sportsmanship is enjoying the activity, not putting your team or the other team down, keeping it positive and respectful on the sideline and accepting the choice of the referee or coaches.
Remember our catchphrase:
'Play fairly, speak clearly, don't shout, work it out!'
Until next time, 'be great, be awesome, be you.'

Ka kite from the Kiwi Can Team
Crazy Day is 22nd June, and if you'd like to organise your child's costume, now is the time to begin.
Things are going to be a bit different this year.  The groups are being categorised by whanau groups and the themes are ...
Hauraki:   1970's - 1990's (go big or go home)
Matawai:  Kiwi workers (farmers, roadworkers, builders ...)
Tokatea:   Tourists (big packs, colourful jackets, terrible pronunciations ...)
Kapanga:  Surfers (stereotypical dude or dudette).
This is a whole school event oganised by the Student Council.  The day promises to be full of fun activities for everyone.
