May ends on a high note for Suncare

May has been another productive and successful month for Suncare. I am pleased to say that we have ended on a high note.

We have achieved our 200th Home Care Package and our Short-Term Restorative Care packages are now running at an average capacity of 80 percent. This is a great result from our staff and a testament to the quality of services we provide our customers and the communities we serve.

On 28-29 May, we held our annual Leadership Forum - an opportunity we take to bring together our wider leadership group and team leaders to talk through all that’s happening in the business, address challenges and provide guidance and practical tools to help them continue to do the great work they do.

Other news this month is the building works to the Maroochydore Day Respite Centre, which needs a new roof due to general wear and tear and storm damage sustained over past seasons. More details about an alternative venue for our services are provided below.

Upgrade works for Day Respite Centre

This year the Maroochydore Day Respite Centre celebrates 40 years. Officially opened on 28 October 1978, the centre has become a vital community hub providing a meeting place, social support, respite care and more than one million meals to the aged and elderly community on the central Sunshine Coast.

After all this hard work and wear and tear, the centre is receiving a well-deserved upgrade. The most urgent of these is replacement of the roof damaged over the storm season. This work will start on Monday 11 June. It’s extensive work that will require the closure of the hall and the relocation of services until the works are expected to be completed in mid-late September.

For customers
From 11 June, Suncare’s regular day respite and social support services will relocate to the Kawana Forest Meeting Place, 60 Woodlands Boulevard, Meridian Plains. Our services will continue as normal and there will be no changes to the existing schedules. Transport services will also operate as normal.

For hall hirers
Due to the nature of building works and for safety reasons the hall will not be available during the building works.

Updates on completion will be posted regularly on our website www.suncare.org.au. Alternatively, please call the Maroochydore Day Respite Centre team on 1800 786 227 for more information. Thank you for your understanding during this necessary and important building work. We look forward to welcoming our customers and the community back to the Maroochydore Day Respite Centre in late September.

Volunteer profile: Sally Dickinson

National Volunteer Week is held in May each year and acknowledges the generous contribution of volunteers nationally. Suncare has more than 200 volunteers helping the aged community, so this month we met Sally Dickinson, volunteer at the Maroochydore Community Centre to hear how she got involved.
Sally grew up in rural South West England enjoying many activities including ballet, Brownies, horse riding and Guides before joining youth clubs and attending local dances. Read more.

Artists featured during Reconciliation Week

Works by Nandjimadji Art Group members Rebecca Jones, Tracey Nicholson, Jody Wheatley, Ali Clarey and Maggie Veitcha are being hosted by Caloundra Stockland this week as part of a Reconciliation Week display. With the Reconciliation Coastal Walk on this Friday 1 June at Golden Beach, the week is a great time to learn, share and grow.

Rockhampton staff delivering gardening services now have new tools to provide improved service to clients, including Carolyn Hewitt (pictured above) who receives fortnightly services from Suncare. Staff and clients are very excited with the benefits of the new equipment now on hand.

D Cafes a place for support and information

D Cafe meetings are held regularly across the Sunshine and Central Coasts and offer the opportunity for carers of people with Dementia to meet others in similar situations and share stories.
During these informal meetings, carers can talk about what is currently working for them, and what could work better. Information is available about Carer Support Programs and services to help in caring roles. Read more.

Advocacy and education support service

Aged and Disability Advocacy Australia is a not-for-profit, independent organisation that provides free, confidential, and client directed advocacy and guardianship services to older people and people with disability across Queensland.
