So Much News!

There's so much to tell you about. Prepare yourself for a novel-length newsletter. Whew! With that disclaimer out of the way, here goes:

I am thrilled to have my work in the lobby of Ladd Tower in Portland, Oregon. This luxury apartment building is located right on Park Avenue. Hello, I just won Monopoly. Or was that Park Place?  Anyway, it's a good thing. It's in the Park Blocks, just around the corner from the Portland Art Museum. Five of my paintings are on display, along with Portland sculptor Dave Haslett's work. A public reception is in the works-- I'll let you know the details soon! In the meantime, check out images from the space, below.

Speaking of space, I've really been wanting to play with white space in my landscapes. It's been percolating, but not yet executed. So many ideas, so little time. Meanwhile, a new abstract series has emerged from these ideas, and I couldn't be more pleased. Check out the images below!

Speaking of abstracts, I've sized up some of my acrylic works on paper to larger oil versions. This was inspired by a woman at a show who picked up one of the 9x9-inch pieces and said, "I need something like this, only bigger." I realized I did, too.  See images, below.

Speaking of sizing up, I created a larger, stand-alone version of one of the panels from my most recent reflections triptych. I always try to make each panel in a multi-paneled piece "work" as a composition on its own, as well as within the whole piece. I often get inspired to riff on them. In this case, the panel in question took me by the throat and said, "Do it!" I answered the call. See images below.

Apropos of nothing that has gone before, see my latest tree-trunk painting.... below.

And, finally...Has art been on your mind? Have you been contemplating a Rachel Harvey oil painting acquisition? Now's the time to do it. We are moving to Mexico next June. Only for a year, but, still. :D  I'm sure I will be painting, but who knows what, and I won't be doing shows. So if you've been thinking about a purchase, do it now!

Why Mexico? Both kids are in dual immersion programs, John has a smattering of Spanish, and I'm semi-conversational. Our plan is learn the language, immerse ourselves in the culture, and, generally, take one long family sabbatical. I am super excited about it!

If you have advice, experience, a place for rent... talk to me!

Warmest regards,

Rachel

P.S. Salt Lake City-area peeps: I will be doing a pop-up show this month! See the show schedule, below, for the details. Save the date!

Tree trunks are hypnotic... who's with me?
Draw Me In, 36x72 inches, oil on canvas, $4250.
I finished this reflections triptych and have enjoyed living with it on my wall while it dried. The more I looked at it, the more I wanted to paint a stand-alone piece based on the right-hand panel. I worked it up to a larger size and went slightly redder in tone.
Summer Perfection, 60x50 inches, $6150, and Loves Only Thee, 80x20 inches, $3150.

I've done many in this Foliage series in acrylics on paper-- 9x9 and 12x12 inches. I got inspired to work them up into larger oils on canvas. I'm really happy with the results.
Top: Gossamer 1, Gossamer 2, 24x24 inches, on beveled-edge canvases, $950 each; Bottom: Aura 1, Aura 2, 30x30 inches, $1450 each.

I really love this little series. It's all about composition, contrast, lines, negative and positive space*... things I love. I asked "what do you see?" on FB & IG and got some interesting answers, ranging from bird's eye to womb to jumping whales and trout. Also, a hurricane. Tell me what you see!
Into the Blue 1, Into the Blue 2 & Into the Blue 3, 30x30 inches, $1450 each.
*negative space is the space around and between the subject(s) of a painting; positive space is the subject, itself.

And here's the work on display in the lobby of Ladd Tower:
l-r, Always Enough, This is the Day, Falling In, Ever and Ever, Lengthen the Day. All are 36x48 except the center one, which is 60x48 inches.

ABOUT MY NEWSLETTER

New pieces, works in progress, notifications of art shows and other happenings, insights into my artistic process and always, some philosophical ramblings thrown in.  You've been warned. :D

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.
