How Somatics enhances your Yoga Practice? by Liz Underwood

Chronic tension or pain need not be the only motivating factor in deciding to try a Somatics class. This movement method is a beautiful prelude for a Yoga practice or for that matter, any form of exercise; in fact they are movements for life, to enhance life.

I came to Somatics, first and briefly in my Yoga teachers’ training in 2005 and more recently in 2015. One of it’s main principles is to relax the muscles from the centre to periphery (in simple terms the muscles that connect our arms and legs all eventually, through connective tissue ultimately connect to the centre of our body) and so the more I incorporated these movements into my own practice I realised how valuable they were for my Yoga students, and began to start each class with these simple, fundamental movements for greater fluidity for body, breath and ease of mind.

There is a mindful element to this practice too. You are guided to sense your body from within, (the meaning of Somatics is to sense oneself from within) as you practice, the movements themselves (known as Pandiculations https://puremovementyoga.co.uk/articulate-pandiculate/  )  are a journey to self discovery and an increased sense of awareness.

The challenge of this practice is the slower pace; but the rewards are the simplicity of the movements and how centred and aligned you feel afterwards.
Liz teaches Wednesday at 6pm and Friday 9.45am.
