First-ever CarpentryCon Only A Week Away!
Not long now till the inaugural CarpentryCon kicks off in Dublin on 30 May! We have now finalised our program, and planning for a range of social events is underway. Ticket sales for the whole conference close at midnight on 23 May. Individual day passes for the workshop day on 1 June will be on sale until 30 May for people not attending the whole conference. The workshop day pass is $25, which includes lunch.
We are very grateful for the generous support of our leading sponsor, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, our supporting sponsor, Mozilla, our venue sponsor, University College Dublin, and our other travel and prize sponsors. We could not have done CarpentryCon without them!
Follow the dedicated CarpentryCon 2018 Twitter feed @carpentrycon for all the action in Dublin.
Social Science Lessons Released
The highly anticipated Data Carpentry lessons for Social Sciences have now been released, and are ready for teaching. As the first Data Carpentry Curriculum targeted towards researchers outside of the life sciences, the lessons allow us to reach out to new communities. The curriculum covers data organisation in spreadsheets, data cleaning with OpenRefine, as well as data manipulation and visualization with R. Are you planning to teach these lessons? If so, please let us know through this form. Read more about the lesson release.

What Have We Been Up To?
Maneesha Sane, The Carpentries' Program Manager, has been compiling reports on Carpentries’ activity - the number of workshops we've run, the number of learners attending our workshops, our training events, and more. You can see and comment on the draft report hosted on GitHub, or read more about The Carpentries’ programmatic assessment work. You can also send comments or questions about the data to maneesha@carpentries.org.
Call for Long-Term Survey Responses
Share your impact story with the assessment team! If you’ve taken a Carpentries workshop - Data Carpentry or Software Carpentry - within the past six months, we invite you to complete our Long-Term Impact Survey. Library Carpentry Sprint a Smashing Success
Library Carpentry ran a two-day hackathon over 10-11 May as part of the annual Mozilla Global Sprint. This third sprint (following earlier sprints in 2016 and 2017) featured lots of updates and new curriculum around digital preservation and developing materials to support the FAIR principles. Work was also done to finalise the new website (now launched). More than 150 pull requests and issues were raised against the lessons, with the git and sql lessons getting some much-needed attention. More than 200 commits to the new website repo helped polish the site for launch. Read the full report.
Merger Talks Open with Library Carpentry
The Carpentries' Executive Council and the Library Carpentry governance team have both voted to start discussions about Library Carpentry joining The Carpentries as a Lesson Organisation. The Carpentries are already assisting Library Carpentry with workshop organisation and will be running instructor training for the Library Carpentry community later this year. Read more.
