Prince Charles given insight into inspiring young coders
The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall were given insight into an innovative outreach programme teaching coding skills to young girls.
During a visit to YOOX NET-A-PORTER’s White City tech hub, Prince Charles and Camilla joined a coding session with more than 60 local schoolgirls, aged 11 to 13, as part of a special session of Imperial CodeLab.Readfull article.
Airbus and Imperial encourage girls to explore careers in aerospace engineering
As part of its ongoing commitment to women in science, Imperial hosted an Aeronautics open day to inspire the next generation of aerospace engineers.
The day, sponsored by Airbus and run by the Department of Aeronautics, included 80 girls aged 13-15 from eight different London schools who attended workshops, talks and activities to discover what a career in aerospace engineering looks like. Read full article.
Dorset, UK, used as model for finding life traces on Mars
By studying streams on the UK coast, experts have calculated how much organic matter we might find on Mars, and where to look.
Dorset is home to highly acidic sulphur streams that host bacteria which thrive in extreme conditions. One such environment, in St Oswald’s Bay, mimics the conditions on Mars billions of years ago. Readfull article.

This full day at Imperial College London introduces A-Level Chemists to what it is like to be an undergraduate in the Chemistry Department. Booking is open to any student currently in Year 12 studying at a non-selective state school (Wednesday 13 June). On Thursday 14 June, the same event will be open to Year 12 students from any schools.

The BioPaint Initiative - 3 & 5 July 2018
A two day activity designed to introduce Year 12 biology students to synthetic biology and biological engineering. Imperial postgraduate students will run the sessions, which have been funded by the US-UK Fulbright Commission. Students will receive an Arduino kit (theirs to keep) which they will learn to program to construct their own UV spectrometer. Using lab techniques, they will produce genetically modified E.coli and use their spectrometers to measure bacterial growth. Attendees will also learn about synthetic biology research and life as an Imperial student. Lunch will be provided.
This event is for a maximum of 25 students. Early applications will be prioritised. Click here to register your interest.
The fascinating world of molecules - Years 7-9 10 July 2018; 11am-12pm
In this fascinating demo lecture, Professor Ramon Vilar, will take you on a trip through the Periodic Table and illustrate how scientists study molecules that Nature has produced over millions of years as well as how new molecules are made.

Programmes for schools
Proto Maker Challenge This is a fully funded programme for students aged 11-14. The programme works with secondary schools local to White City and involves three full days of making in the Reach Out Makerspace and two after school mentoring sessions. The Maker Challenge - Summer Intensive Aimed at young people aged 14-18 who are local to White City, The Maker Challenge offers the opportunity to develop an idea and see it through to creation using cutting edge technologies. Apply for the Summer Maker Challenge here.
Intermediate Biology Olympiad Competition
Teachers can now register their 16-17 year old students for this year’s Intermediate Biology Olympiad (taking place from 15th – 21st June). Students are encouraged to put their participation in the competition on their further or higher education applications. All participating students are also eligible to receive free BioNet membership for one year.
The Nancy Rothwell Award 2018 specimen drawing competition for 7 – 18 year olds is now open for submissions. Prizes include an experience day at the Royal Veterinary College for students, and their school can also win £100.
There are three age categories (7-11, 12-14 and 15-18) and prizes will be awarded to three runners up and the winner.Visit the Royal Society of Biology website for more information.
The Award will close for entries on 10th September 2018.
Physics Department Outreach events
A level Project Open Day - 21 June
Are you interested in finding out what it would be like to study physics as a degree? This open day is for Year 12 students currently studying physics and thinking about their next step into higher education.
GCSE Project Open Day - 22 June
This event is aimed at GCSE students who plan to take physics at A Level. The day will consist of short talks and tips on how to apply for physics at university.

Photography Competition 2018
‘Patterns in nature’ is the theme of this year’s Royal Society of Biology Photography Competition. Life on Earth encompasses a myriad of regular forms, sequences and structures and we invite students to capture these details of biology. Supported by Eppendorf, there are two categories each with a cash prize: 18+ (£1000) and under 18s (£500). Entries close on 31st July 2018.

School Visits Programme
Jane Marshall, Imperial's Outreach School Visits Programme Manager, offers entertaining and informative talks to sixth formers in state schools across London and the South East.
Topics covered include the benefits of a degree, choosing your course and university and an insight into uni life, writing an excellent Personal Statement and preparing for university interviews.
Jane also offers mock interviews for Year 13 students. Schools can book for autumn 2018 and beyond. Please email Jane Marshall.
