Message from the President
Greetings everyone,

Well, no doubt many of you who attended the convention in Warrnambool will have returned home by now or continued on your journey to another destination.

I had the most marvellous time over the long weekend, meeting up with old friends, meeting newer members and thoroughly enjoying the presentations from the platform.

My sincere thanks to all the presenters and workshop leaders!

A lot of hard work and preparations went into the success of this convention and I again express my sincere thanks to first of all the team down there at Warrnambool for their total dedication to getting everything just right. A huge thanks to Stan McCullough, who lead the team in the planning and execution of a great weekend.

Massive thanks to our VAPS committee too for their participation and the host of volunteers whose help we certainly appreciated.  The great work done by Alfred and Margaret Zommers and team for the inter-club…huge to say the least. My special thanks to Peter Kewley, whose behind the scenes work was awesome. Easy to forget, that the smooth running of our convention, is in the work and planning beforehand.

What a fantastic weekend we had and here’s what our Keynote speaker, Joshua had to say in a note of thanks to me… Hi Ian, I just wanted to say that it was an absolute pleasure to come and speak at VAPS over the weekend. Thank you so much for having me as your keynote speaker on both days. I was really impressed at the professionalism, attention to detail and work all of you put into running such a successful event. And of course, you have a wonderful attentive and passionate audience!

Joshua is a consummate professional himself, so it was wonderful to receive such praise from such an amazing photographer who is so well regarded internationally.

Denis Smith, another great presenter was also suitably impressed… Hi Ian, Once again, I would like to say, thanks, for the invitation to present at VAPS this year... I had a ball. You all did such a great job with the conference.  A lot of people were asking about how to buy the light painting tools.
Here is the link: www.denissmith.com.au

I have created a discount code for a 10% discount on any purchase. The code is VAPS10    I was approached by a bunch of people keen to see me at their clubs. My immediate response was, hell yes! I will be putting together a bit of a VAPS Tour that will take in a bunch of the larger clubs, and I spoke to a few people keen to bring their smaller clubs together as well. This is a great opportunity to get around the clubs, and I would promote the events in the general photography community, a great way for the clubs to get some reach.
Any interested people can contact me at hello@denissmith.com.au

Some new distributors to the VAPS organization, of camera’s, photographic gear and supplies have approached us, and they will feature in our conventions and advertising here in newsbrief. These commercial entities are slowly realizing that the VAPS name and entity is very large and one of Australia’s best run photographic organizations.

For those who missed out on the convention, there is always next year, this time we head to Traralgon and the Latrobe Valley Camera Club is looking after us. Same last weekend in May, so start planning!

All the best for your winter photography everyone

Stay safe and healthy

Warm regards
Ian Rolfe
(President)

Jenny Colson

Special Award

Jenny joined the Essendon Camera Club early in 1993, with her girlfriend Sue Jackson. She fitted well into the club and was soon actively involved in its activities. She became secretary in 1997 and held that position till 2002. In 2003, she was elected as president. She held this position, initially for five years.  She resumed as president in 2009, and served another three years. She was also print and slide secretary for several years, which is an onerous job.  Jenny is a keen photographer and she was soon promoted from B-grade to A-grade photographer in the club.

Jenny was at the forefront of organizing the yearly Melbourne Cup Weekend get-away. A number of members of the club would go away for the Cup “long-weekend”, e.g. to Echuca, Halls Gap, and so on. The idea was to enjoy the company of other club members, dress-up for a Cup sweep, and take some photographs. In recognition of her long and extensive service with the club, she was made a life member.

In 2006, she became treasurer of VAPS, and held that position for 12 years. She brought out her monthly treasurer’s report, which was clear and detailed, for all those years.  In VAPS, Jenny has attended the Convention each year, where she helped behind the counter, and was on hand to assist as required.  At committee meetings, Jenny also prepares the lunches. This is something she also does at VAPS judging events.

She is friendly, frank and full of common sense.  Not afraid to speak her mind, she a positive, lively, honest and forthright personality on the committee.  Thankfully, she is going to remain in a non-executive role, without the onerous duties of Treasurer. Her contribution to photography in general in the past 25 years has been enormous, and she is worthy of heartfelt thanks.

She has already received the State Service Award and the Meritorious Award so in 2018, to mark her retirement as VAPS Treasurer, the VAPS committee wishes to confer on her a special medal of service in thanks for her extensive and exceptional service to photography.

Alan Cole

Alan Cole is a founding member of Yea Camera club and one of the people who form the backbone of the club.  He helped establish some of the basic structures for both the senior and junior camera clubs.  He has a passion for photography and encourages that in the membership through his many presentations on different topics. The club is frequently asked to photograph local events and Alan is often the Go-To man because of his keenness to participate.  He is enthusiastic as a photographer and because of his eagerness, he continually improve his skills.

He was Vice President from 2008 – 9 and Secretary from 2009 – 12.  In 2011, he established and taught the curriculum for Yea Junior Camera Club.  In 2013, he made a presentation to the senior club monthly meeting on sports photography.  He mentors members on how to photograph the Yea Tigers netball and football, the images being printed in the local paper.  From 2011 onwards, he made a presentation series on “Back to Basics’ and ‘Know Your Camera’.  Other presentations include ‘Stress Test Your Lens,’ in 2014, ‘Lightbox Use and Construction’ and ‘Flash photography’ in 2015.

He has entered many local competitions and performed consistently well so his skills are acknowledged by these ongoing successes in the competitions. He has won at Whittlesea and Berwick, been a section winner at the Yea Annual Show and scored well in the 2017 interclub.  He is repeatedly asked to take photos for politicians and local businesses.

Since the inception of the club, Alan has presented the Projected Image section of the club’s monthly meetings. He devised, and consistently revises, the I.T. Program for data entry of the exhibitions into the Annual Competition. He represents the club as a judge for Alexandra Camera Club and co-ordinates the judging of our competition on judging day. He has organised photo outings into the city.

Alan Cole continues to play a significant role in Yea Camera club so the club justifiably wishes to thank him for his substantial contribution. VAPS has no hesitation in presenting him the Meritorious Service Award.

Assistance for Disability Photography
Hi all,

I’m interested in running a group for the inpatients who will likely have a spinal or brain injury.

Most of these patients use wheelchairs or walking aids and some have limited or impaired use of the fine motor skills in their hands.

I’m curious as to any contacts you may have who use a modified camera to cater for grip issues.

Would any members be open to helping me run the groups weekly here at Royal Talbot Rehab in Kew?

Please give me a call on 0405 696 701 to discuss.

Warm regards,

Tim Marchinton

Warragul National News -- Thank you and Congratulations

Congratulations to everyone who was part of our club National Competition and Exhibition.
I was so happy to see so many people at the exhibition. Two years ago we had approximately 200 people attend, last year that leapt up to approximately 300 and this year again jumped up to about 400! Thank you to those who gave so much time to help organise the exhibition, bump in and bump out and man the desk every day.

Congratulations also to those who entered as well as those who received acceptances. Special congratulations to Linda Keagle on so many successful images. Very exciting to receive the most successful exhibitor in digital and the most successful local exhibitor.
Your work is amazing Linda, well deserved recognition.

Also, a big congratulation to Jake Trotman for receiving the most successful Warragul Camera Club member first time National entrant.

With gratitude to you all. Jane
