The Wind In Your Sails

Some words from your president

A very short Write Angles this month because of this... but speaking of breaks it's time for summer! Our end-of-year author book launch will take place on Saturday, June 16 at Laurel Bookstore 3-5 in lieu of our 3rd Sunday meeting. And, on July 22nd,  Fred Dodsworth has graciously offered to host our summer social at his Berkeley home. Save the date, bring a friend, and enjoy our annual reading of Columbus

Last year's summer social at Heinhold's First & Last Chance Saloon >>

As we wrap up our club's business for 2017-2018 and look forward to a summer break, I'd like I want to thank everyone who helped the club move forward this year! Here's a few shoutouts:

I'll start with Lynn Fraley, my VEEP: thanks for helping manage our move to Preservation Park and shape the flow of our meetings. Jane Glendinning thanks for being our NorCal rep and all those YUMMY brownies! Henry Hitz our Treasurer, thanks for keeping track of the dollars and cents and making all that coffee. Thank you to Teresa Boardman and all of the substitute secretaries who have helped journal the story of our business decisions. Lucille Bellucci and Kymberlie Ingalls, thanks for booking all those interesting speakers, and thanks also, Kymberlie, for being our Central Board rep. Karma Bennett thank you so much for your general awesomenes and cheer and food and posting on the website and helping manage the flow of information, including all those fab interviews by Cristina Deptula! Thanks to JoAnn Ainsworth for keeping our Published Member Pages up-to-date. Huge thanks to Linda Brown for keeping the club ticking in all the ways you do, and Linda Zallen for processing all our new member applications. And thanks to both Lindas for doing such a wonderful job with orientations! Tim Jollymore you rocked it with all that great leadership at book and writer's events; Liz Flynn having you sit at the door and greet people gave our meetings a nice groove; and Gerald Mahoney thanks for all the photos! Thank you Christine Volker for running our election so smoothly! Thanks to everyone who facilitated a support group: Henry Hitz, Kymberlie Ingalls, Bruce Shiguera & Anne Fox, Leena Prasad, and Wendy Sonenson. And thanks Francine Howard for keeping everyone safely  "under the umbrella" and being a rudder of influence. Thank you Fred Dodsworth for co-hosting a wonderful reading and our summer party!!! And finally, thanks to Tom Higgins for all your support and encouragement in helping us all "think bigger." (Did I forget anyone? I will probably remember as soon as I hit 'send'! Thank you!!!)

And to all of you who donated books, bought raffle tickets, brought a friend, hosted an event, attended an event, read and presented, or supported the club in any way... may you be endlessly rewarded by your own writing success!

Before you read on, please take a moment to renew your membership!

Have a relaxing summer, and don't forget to

Welcome Kermit Heartsong!

Our election process was lively and interesting, with THREE excellent candidates for Vice President.

Congratulations to Kermit Heartsong, who has some great ideas for helping our club sail on! Kermit E. Heartsong is an author, a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle (online edition, former), a publisher for Tayen Lane Publishing (100+ books published, former), an entrepreneur, and an award-winning game designer. Kermit has written three non-fiction books (Ukraine: ZBIG's Grand Chessboard & How the West Was Checkmated; Illusions, Dystopia & Monsters; The United States of Mammon), produced over fifty language-based games and toys, as the founder/CEO of Word Origin, Inc., and, personally, developed two, award-winning games—Articulation and Articulation Jr/Sr—that won consecutive ‘Game of the Year Awards.’ Further, Kermit has worked as a screenwriter, developmental editor, writing coach, graphic designer, and publishing consultant. Kermit is currently the Managing Director at WSDG Design.

Kermit is a member of California Writers Club (Marin and Berkeley branches), a former student/member of the Writer's Boot Camp (Santa Monica), and a student at the Writer's Workshop (San Francisco). Come and meet Kermit at our June 16th writer's event.

Affairs of the State

Here's what's happening at the division and state level, and/or in other branches.

Do you know about NorCal?

Our coalition of CWC branches in Northern Calfornia

The Northern California regional group for the CWC is on a tear to increase its visibility among the branches of the state organization.  They want you all to know their raison d’etre, which is to provide an informal place for branch members to talk about their needs, wants, events, obstacles and triumphs.

There is no other place for the 15 branches of the Northern California region to learn and profit from each other’s experiences.  The state-wide organization of the California Writers Club is more focused on the formal aspects of maintaining a non-profit business.  So the NorCal group is it for communication among the branches.  Its attractive website can be found at http://cwcnorcalwriters.org

The calendar on the Norcal website is particularly important since it lists all the major events of the 15 chapters, allowing CWC members to know about and attend events at nearby chapters. The calendar has fallen into some disuse recently, but a major effort now is being made to upgrade its listings, with a new push to get good information from the various program chairs.

At the May 5 NorCal meeting, Board officers were elected for the coming term.  They are: Secretary: Evelyn LaTorre; Treasurer: Dave LaRoche; Co-Chairs:  Carole Bumpus and Kymberlie Ingalls.  Carole, having already completed three years as Chair, has agreed to serve again with a co-chair, hopefully to pass on the baton to Kymberlie.
