<<First Name>>!

Let's catch up, we have lots of news and events coming up to tell you about. But first...

If you're looking to maximise your tax return by making a tax-deductible gift this EOFY, then we have a great opportunity for you to support our community gallery. This year we are raising funds to replace our old and inefficient lighting system with new LED technology that will cut our energy use down by 75%.

This year your gift is one that will keep on giving - as we save money through lower power bills, we can put that back into our programming and youth activities. Please see our project page online for full details, and click here to donate - it's your last chance this EOFY!

Thank you to those of you who have already donated!

Defective Rituals

by Carolyn McKenzie-Craig, Caity Reynolds and Katelyn Jane-Dunn

The failure of subjective conformance is ritualised in the practices of three contemporary female artists. These works at once explore, satirize and subvert the expectations of being female through explorations in different media.

Birth/Rebirth

by Mia Peronis

This photographic series explores the challenges that come with motherhood; extreme highs and lows in physical, emotional and mental wellbeing, and a total surrender of pre-motherhood independence. All of these challenges present an ongoing journey of growth and acceptance for the artist, and are explored through Mia Peronis’ observations of her own family, captured one moment at a time.

The Logic of Dreams

by Suzannah Babicci

In a union of opposites, this exhibition of small sculpture work explores an expression of the artist's experiences with nature, and the outward reality of the world. Though manifested through conscious and rational, even mechanical processes; mystery sets in and reveals more than meets the eye.

New Director -

This week the new temporary Director of Umbrella has joined the team. Kellie Williams, previously the Company Manager of Dancenorth, has a richly diverse working experience. Her career to date has included; contributing to the leadership of a cutting edge regional arts company, five years within the Queensland Government, including grants management at Arts Queensland, one year with a state-run art gallery, three years at the helm of an innovative not-for-profit, three years within an Olympic sporting organisation and five years as a professional artist.

We are very excited to have Kellie come on board. Drop by and say hi if you are at Umbrella or meet her at the next opening!

Printmakers at Pop Up Percivals

While you are doing your Sunday market shopping, why not wander down a bit further and find our Studio Printmakers selling some unique fine art prints at the Pop Up Percival's space!

Our printmakers will be there between 9am - 12pm every Sunday until 15 July 2018.
It's in the Flinders St Mall, a few doors down from Mary Who? Bookshop (in the old Salvos store).

Umbrella heads to CIAF: 12 - 15 July

This year we have worked with some new Murris in Ink artists to produce works for the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair 2018 – Martina Ah Sam and Shirley Dawson have created beautiful prints telling the stories of their people and country. Returning to the show are Tommy Pau, Toby Cedar, Obery Sambo, and Gail Mabo with new works honouring her father Eddie Mabo. We’re really impressed by the work they’ve all made, and invite you to come and visit the Umbrella section at CIAF 2018 if you’re making the trip up to Cairns.

Balinese artist studio residency

We are very excited to have Balinese artist, I Made Griyawan, come to work in our studio downstairs which is part of The Grand Hotel Townsville Artist in Residence program. This program is supported by funding from the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy. It enables us to bring two artists (one international, one national) to Townsville to undertake a short residency, give an artist talk/open studio and deliver a masterclass to local artists. Made has been in several group exhibitions in Bali, Japan and the USA. He is one of the finest practitioners of the Batuan School of Balinese traditional painting.
