AthleticDirectorU introduces a new case study model, the first of which is led by UC Davis AD Blue & centered around revenue & attendance challenges at hypothetical Jones University. The case presents multi-year financial & attendance data, as well as situational leadership dynamics for AD Janice Rogers. After considering the circumstances & variables, here's the decision-making framework, "There are two main issues in play here. In the short term, Rogers needs to ensure that she is being responsive to Coach Driscoll and the frustrated donors, to the extent necessary and appropriate. What, if anything, should Rogers do about this? How should she communicate with Coach Driscoll and the donors? There is also a structural issue to manage related to revenue. Rogers must find a way to grow revenue to keep pace with costs. What should Jones U. do to make sure football revenue continues to increase? What analyses need to be performed and who will perform them? Do staffing or structural changes need to be made? If so, what are they and how will she execute them? Overall, what should Janice Rogers do and why?" (link); Watch: Blue overviews the case, "The case study method helps people learn by studying real business and managerial situations encountered by experienced executives. The reader is encouraged to analyze the case and think about how they would proceed if they were the decision-making leader involved in the situation." (link); Once you've worked through the case in a group setting, you'll want to download the follow-up Teaching Note. Note: Don't skip to this part or the value of working through the case appropriately is diluted. (link)
UNLV AD Reed-Francois has completed her first full year leading the Rebels, which was marked by the exits of former Prez Jessup, longtime Senior Assoc. AD Toliver & the coming of a new FB stadium with the Raiders set to ascend on Sin City. Reed-Francois: "When we’ve had personnel challenges, we’ve lived by our core values. It sets the tone for the organization as to what’s tolerable and what’s not, and if you have abhorrent behavior, then this is what you can expect. So if anything, it helped accelerate our culture." Moving forward, Reed-Francois points to MBB as a key focus, "reversing the revenue trend is critical," after an average attendance mark of 10,621. Part of the solution is a better non-conference schedule & Reed-Francois will surge into her second year with continued designs to double the size of the Rebel Athletic Fund annual donors to 5K. (link)
Speaking of surging MBB programs, Memphis is the poster child at the moment as $4.5M is now the expected increase in ticket sales & donations connected to the hire of new HC Hardaway. The total looks to nearly erase the $4.7M shortfall UM Prez Rudd noted when the Tigers decided to make a leadership change. Another note on the Tigers' FY19 budget, "The university's preliminary budget for next year includes a $4.5 million increase in expenses related to recurring athletics operations. Memphis owes Smith nearly $10 million after firing him with three years remaining, but can pay him that figure over six years." (link)
North Dakota's roster of HCs is short on female leadership. UND AD Chaves: "That fact is not lost on me. ... Sometimes, hires come down to timing. But I think in broad terms, diversity in a department is incredibly important." However, Chaves will make his first hire as boss in Grand Forks with the appointment of a new Women's Golf HC in the coming weeks, "We're going to open it up in the next week or so and hope we get a diverse pool of candidates. That's always the goal." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Saturdays Down South's O'Gara writes on the difficulty, but possibility, of a 'Group of 5' FB program breaking through to the College Football Playoff. O'Gara: "How quickly we forget that 2016 Houston was actually following the perfect path for a Group of 5 team to earn a Playoff berth. Tom Herman’s squad opened the season by beating No. 3 Oklahoma on a neutral site. After Week 1, Houston was already up to No. 6 in the Associated Press poll. […] The key with Houston was that not only did it get that big-time marquee win vs. a traditional power — I realize that it’s a challenge for certain Group of 5 schools to land matchups like that — it also started the year as a Top 25 team." The 2018 program that could fit the bill? Florida Atlantic. The Owls open the season at Oklahoma & then play UCF in Orlando a couple of weeks later, already on the radar as a Top 25 squad. (link)

Some more words of wisdom from former Utah AD Hill, who also mentions his interest in possibly doing some consulting down the road, "The juice and the energy that’s around here, being part of a team. We live and die on the weekend as a corporation, and come into work on Monday while living the Utes. Being around young people is just ridiculously fun. […] We've made mistakes, and we didn’t want to do it. But we have to move on. In this business, you can't have a rearview mirror. You have to move on. […] The culture is smart, plays hard and isn’t afraid of high expectations. We set our expectations hard, and if we succeed, great. But if not, we dust ourselves off and move on." (link)
What's it feel like to complete a high-profile HC search? For Texas A&M's Woodward after landing new FB HC Fisher, "It was one of those things where you want to be excited about everything, but it was one of those things where I was too tired to celebrate." Woodward points to stable leadership at the upper levels of any organization as key to success, also notes, "We're in rare air right now. We're competing at the highest level in all of our sports. We're doing the things that we need to be doing, but it's always treacherous at the top." (link)
Kentucky AD Barnhart was still searching for answers on why is Baseball program didn't make the NCAA Tourney, "Look, I’m on a selection committee so I know how difficult it is. I’ve been on the other end of those phone calls, but this one was a little hard to understand. […] If it’s truly about putting the best 64 teams in the country, and people admit we’re one of those teams, but you’re not putting us in because of conference record, I’m not sure that’s a valid reason." Barnhart also talks about the "uniqueness" of UK's new Baseball stadium that's set to come online this Fall, also points to the possible future addition of an indoor space that I think he's saying would be literally underneath the new field. (link)
Fairfield boss Schlickmann with his latest 'From the Director's Chair' installment, recaps a bunch of highlights from the 2017-18 campaign, but also looks forward. Schlickmann points to working through budget processes, wants to continue branding upgrades at a number of facilities, improvement projects are also on the docket for a number of venues. Schlickmann: "It's all about who we aspire to be as an institution, which is 'premier' and 'modern.'" Schlickmann also mentions a coming strategic plan for his department. More. (link)
The Razorback Foundation pushed $7M+ to athletics in 2017 to help cover salary costs for over five dozen employees who exceed their pay limits set by the state. It's the latest in a look by Arkansas Online to connect the dots between the Foundation & university as it seeks to get access to open records. Of course, many of the five dozen are coaches, but AVC/Senior Assoc. AD for Administration & Sport Programs Cromer Peoples receives $10K annually & Assoc. AD for Public Relations Trainor $1.2K for their commitments to speak at Razorback Club events.  (link)
More Personnel: TCU Baseball HC Schlossnagle pulls his name from consideration at Mississippi State after visiting Starkville over the weekend. (link); Boston University has narrowed its search for a new Men's Hockey HC, group includes BU AHC O'Connell, Boston Bruins AC Pandolfo, as well as Union HC Bennett. (link); Northwestern Prez Schapiro will begin his two-year term as Big Ten's Chair of the Council of Presidents/Chancellors, joined by Vice Chair and Ohio State Prez Drake, and past chairs Indiana Prez McRobobie and Minnesota Prez Kaler. The quartet also serves as the Exec/Compensation Committee for the league. (link); Santa Clara Prez Father Engh will step down at the end of the 2018-19 academic year. (link); The Arizona Board of Regents approved salary bumps for presidents last week based on "exemplary performance." Arizona State Prez Crow’s base was raised by $90K to $690K, Northern Arizona Prez Cheng’s base salary up to $475K from $390K, and Arizona Prez Robbins will receive a $675K base salary, an increase from $600K. Scheduled future pay increases for each scheduled for September of each of the next three years. (link); The College of Charleston will use William Funk & Associates to help find its next president. Note: I don't think Kansas's 247Sports outlet really has any idea who's in the mix to become the next AD for the Jayhawks, but that certainly hasn't stopped considerable speculation. The newest 'hot board' reviews the possibilities of Arkansas State AD Mohajir, former Arkansas boss Long, Oklahoma Senior Assoc. AD for External Mossman, Northern Illinois AD Frazier, Ole Miss boss Bjork, UCF's White, Colorado State AD Parker, Florida Executive Assoc. AD for Internal Veatch, Cincinnati AD Bohn, Memphis boss Bowen & KU Interim AD Lester. Each gets a "one-line summary," "one-line concern," "why he fits," & "contract details." (link)
North Carolina's student newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel, gets comments from a student under the moniker of "S" who is currently running a sports gambling operation on the Chapel Hill campus. "S" talks of using the likes of Venmo, Apple Pay & Cash App to collect balances, labeling the transactions as "rent" or "LSAT tutoring." "S" also notes stories of some unpaid debts, "If gambling is legal, then it’s pretty easy to get your money left on the street." Tar Heels Senior Assoc. AD for Strategic Communications Kirschner points to the department focusing on the integrity of games, "The concern is already there. We’ll see how this affects peoples’ attitudes." A bit more. (link)
Rutgers is a year out from completing its $115M RWJBarnabas Health Athletic Performance Center. Updated pictures from the project show the steel structure being complete with a topping off ceremony set for today. Math on the new digs works out to $960 per square foot for the new venue that four programs will call home (Wrestling, Gymnastics, MBB & WBB). Lots more construction images. (link)
Nike VP for Design and Special Projects Hatfield is also a former University of Oregon pole vaulter, holds an architecture degree and "is the man behind the Air Jordan basketball shoe." His design for UO's Hayward Field reconstruction was the first one selected as it kept the iconic look of the stadium & updated the facility to the level required to host the 2021 World Outdoor Championships. However, Hatfield's design was rejected at some point in favor of one unveiled last month that completely changes the old digs. Hatfield has not minced words on this decision and in a lengthy letter spells out his opinion: "If you're gonna spend north of $200 million ... please ... consider this. For all that moola you get a fancy looking stadium but you get a second-rate PERFORMANCE venue and a third rate INDOOR training facility. ... As I see it, the new GLASS HORSESHOE design is beautiful, even sensual and on TV and in person it will be spectacular. The big problem is, IT DOES NOT WORK." Lots here, including Hatfield pointing out that UO won't say much at this point to upset the Phil Knight apple cart, as Knight and his wife have agreed to help finance the $200M project after just announcing a $500M donation to the school for science. Yesterday's D1.ticker included a clip about the proliferation/dominance of NBA content on Twitter & today is a look at, "How signature shoes have taken over the NBA." "Only 11 current players have a signature shoe with a U.S.-based basketball company like Nike, Adidas, Under Armour and, yes, Big Baller Brand, while another eight have signature models with a Chinese brand. And yet, nearly 70 percent of the players who appeared in a game this season played in a signature shoe -- 327 in all. [...] Worn by a whopping 67 percent of the league, the NBA's official outfitter saw more players donning a Swoosh than any other brand. Ninety players wore one of the past two Kobe AD models, each released after Bryant's 2016 retirement. Forty-two laced up George's debut PG1 model, a $110 shoe that was immediately much loved for its standout performance." More in an article in which your hoops student-athletes would likely find some value. (link)
Also Noticed: More from former ESPN MBB analyst & new scheduling consultant Adams on his work with Conference USA, "There is much more to this strategy. Phase I is playing out right now as you see the new conference format. The non-conference portion will be more apparent as phase II rolls out in 2019-20. There are many intricate parts to this comprehensive strategy. Stay tuned." (link); Arkansas Baseball HC Van Horn wonders why the NCAA isn't utilizing instant replay in the Regional round of the Tourney. (link); Attorneys for women involved in charges connected to former Arizona FB student-athlete Bradford argue a consolidation of lawsuits would only help to make the University's case easier. (link)
