From the HS Academic Head.....

I recently visited a tertiary education institution and up on the wall of one of the lecturing halls was the quote: “LIFE ISN`T ABOUT WAITING FOR THE STORM TO PASS, IT’S LEARNING TO DANCE IN THE RAIN”. What does this actually mean? It means that we all encounter difficult times, whether we are adults or students, whether it is at work, at home or as a student at school. More often, we will sit back and wait for those storms to pass, wasting valuable time - time we could have used to learn from the experience. Learning from each experience will help us to deal better with the next storm we encounter.
We need to teach our children that there will be good times and that there will be bad times. We need to teach them to face the difficult times and not wait for it to pass; to rather turn it around, to create a learning experience from it and as a result, let it become a positive experience. This will help them when they grow into young adults and come face-to-face with more challenges.

We are very excited to host the Key Stage 2 Grandparents and Special Person Day on Friday, 1st of June. Having grandparents is a privilege and is not always granted to everybody. In some instances the grandparents live in other cities or countries, therefore, on Friday, we will also recognise and celebrate the other significant people in our children's lives that play a fundamental role in their upbringing and their childhood.

They High School have started writing their internal June Examinations. The examinations will run from 28 May until 8 June. Good luck to all the students writing, as well as the teachers assessing the papers. Letters regarding the June reports will go out soon.

Ms Carolissen and Mr Radnitz are currently in Budapest with a group of students at the annual SEK Culture event. From the photos I have seen, it looks like our students are having an excellent time and at the same time they are learning so much from the students from the other SEK and IES schools. More news regarding this will be revealed in the next few weeks.
Kind Regards

Butterfly World

In our class we have been learning all about insects and how important these little creatures are to the environment. As part of our learning experience the Reception classes visited Butterfly World on Friday the 15th of May.  The students were all very excited as they got on the bus, ready for their adventure.  The students had a wonderful time, learning about all the different creatures that live at the Butterfly World Zoo and they were eager to share some of their favourite parts of the outing. They were all asked to write a sentence and draw a picture describing their favourite part.

It was a lovely day that the students will remember for a long time.

Natural Disasters

In Year 4 the students have been learning about the topic Natural Disasters. They have covered Tsunami’s, Volcanoes, Wildfires, Earthquakes, Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Avalanches and many more.  The students took the teaching into their own hands by presenting orals to their fellow classmates about their chosen Natural Disaster. The learners were able to bring 3D representations of their chosen Natural Disaster.

We had some exploding Volcanoes, terrifying Earthquake models, interesting tectonic plate movement, monstrous Typhoons and so on. The students learnt that Natural Disasters can be avoided, how to keep safe when one occurs, the history of different disasters that occurred and what causes the disaster to occur.  The students all took part in the lesson and had a wonderful time teaching each other.

From the German classroom

We have worked hard and had fun in the German class this Term.  Year 7 and 8 students do not have the pressure of CIE examinations yet, so we often have more time stretch out activities. In a foreign language class, students should be the active ones, so I try to make sure that students have enough opportunities in class to be active participants.

The Yrade 7's were recently given the task of interviewing each other.  In a foreign language, it is just as important to be able to ask questions as it is to answer them, so this is good practice.

The Year 8's were asked to come up with a creative way of quizzing their classmates on exam material. They got to stand in front of the classroom and act as teachers. I look forward to seeing even more of students’ creative initiative next term.

Friday Culture Lessons

From sport to food, Term 2 has provided the high school students with a host of ‘Health and Fitness’ experiences. The Friday culture lesson has focused on the importance of the health and wellbeing of each student.  We have been lucky enough to welcome a variety of guests into school who have shared their knowledge and expertise, volunteering their time to provide taster sessions for our students.

The term began with a presentation from Fiona Thornton of Into Nutrition.  Students were asked to consider how they fuel their bodies and what food they eat to keep themselves energised. Fiona corrected many myths about healthy and unhealthy foods and provided very useful ideas for breakfasts and snacks to maximise their energy levels and optimise learning throughout the day.

A range of different sporting sessions have been on offer throughout the term; students have been able to try activities they had never previously done, including volleyball and CrossFit.  Michelle Marais, from Back to Basics Pilates, provided students with an introduction to Pilates. Harder than most of the students expected, Michelle explained the anaerobic exercise and its benefits before engaging students in some classic Pilate’s techniques. This was followed up by Michelle hosting an aerobic exercise session the following week, enabling students to experience the difference between the two exercise types.

Finally, every high school student was given the chance to learn how to cook quick, simple and healthy snacks.  Estelle Smith, from Annie B School of Home Cooking, ran two interactive cookery classes teaching students (and staff) how to make hummus and banana cocoa ice cream. Some very enthusiastic student volunteers assisted Estelle, and thankfully everyone got to taste the finished products.  Consequently, and largely due to the enthusiasm of our students, Estelle is running a cookery workshop exclusively for BIS students during the forthcoming holidays.  For more information regarding this please contact the school.

As a school we are always grateful to external visitors whose professions can be inspirational for our high school students. Many thanks to Fiona, Michelle and Estelle for their motivational sessions this term.

Soccer Results

Our U9 soccer team played against Woodbridge last week Wednesday, 23 May at the Parklands Sport Complex. The team gave it all they had and beat Woodbridge with a score of 2-1. Goals were scored by Dumisani Ngono and Declan Macpherson.

Declan was awarded Player of the match for his dedication to the team.

Well done, we are proud of you, boys!

The U10 soccer team played their last match of the term on Tuesday. CBC proved to be a strong opponent and unfortunately we lost 0-3. Tom Carter- Hutton was selected by his team mates as  Player of the match.
On Tuesday the U11 soccer team played their last match for the term against CBC. After a nail-biting match, the boys lost 0-1. Thank you to all the parents for their support and for the team's dedication and perseverance throughout the term.
The U12 soccer team faced CBC in a second game of the season.  An early goal in the first half saw CBC leading 1 – 0. Our boys fought back with a vengeance, showing excellent teamwork and very good defense. Although the U12 boys had some really good attempts at goal, the CBC goalkeeper proved to be formidable and we could just not get the ball past him.

The game ended with a 1-0 victory to CBC. I am very proud of the sportsmanship our boys’ displayed, despite losing the game.

ROLLER COASTER ENGINEERS!

In MYP 1 Life Science students are learning about force, motion, and different types of energy. The past week MYP 1 students have been researching, creating, and building a model roller coaster. After developing an initial design, we used many trial and error runs to check the progress of our work after making any necessary adjustments. In the end, we successfully designed a model roller coaster that met all the requirements. This project has allowed them to truly understand the physics behind force and motion.

Community Helpers

In English Is Fun for Playgroup, we wrapped up our unit on Community Helpers with a long and fun project exploring how doctors help us feel better. Our youngest students cared for dolls by mending "owies". Then, each child created their own doctor's medical kit that they were able to bring home and continue the imagination process! These kits contained real bandaids, cotton balls, Q-tips and several colored 2D images.

The kids also learned about what each one can do to keep themselves and their classmates healthy. For example, washing their hands with soap regularly and covering their mouths with the inside of their elbows when they cough and sneeze!

Keep up the good work, my Playgroup friends!.
