ETER data for the year 2015 now available on-line
The provisional release of ETER data for the year 2015 (for students academic year 2015/2016) is now available on-line. The data currently covers 30 (of 36) countries and 2,144 HEIs. For the first time, this new release includes student data for Slovenian HEIs. The final release of the 2015 data will take place 9th September 2018 and will include the remaining countries, new variables on geography, student mobility and university hospitals, as well as a new Web interface.
With this release, ETER data are available for five consecutive years (2011-2015) and, therefore, provide important information on the temporal evolution of European Higher Education. The release of the 2016 data will take place in late spring 2019.
ETER in a nutshell (2014 edition)
  • 2,764 individual Higher Education Institutions in 36 countries.
  • Countries covered: EU-28, EEA-EFTA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland), candidate countries (the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (fYRoM), Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey).
  • 22,7 mio. undergraduate students and 0,7 mio. PhD students (2014/2015).
  • 85% of all tertiary education students in the participating countries
  • Average Completeness of the data 78%.
  • Data available for the years 2011 to 2015.
The European Tertiary Education Register (ETER) is a database that provides a core set of data on Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) delivering degrees at the tertiary level in Europe. It provides descriptive information, such as legal status and foundation year, geographical information, students and graduates, staff, HEI expenditures, research activities, as well as a set of pre-defined indicators characterizing relevant dimensions of HEI activities, like the extent of subject specialization, international mobility, gender balance.
ETER is a project supported by the European Commission’s Directorate General for Education Youth, Sport and Culture and the Joint Research Centre for the years from 2013 to 2019. It is a joint undertaking of five partners - USI, Università della Svizzera Italiana, Lugano, Joanneum Research, Graz, NIFU – Nordic Institute for Studies in Innovation, Research and Education, Oslo, University of Rome La Sapienza and University of Pisa – in close collaboration with EUROSTAT, with a network of national experts and with the National Statistical Authorities of the participating countries.
ETER is a European Commission initiative implemented by a consortium of five partners, which aims at providing data on Higher Education Institutions in Europe. It is an Erasmus+ project fully financed by the European Commission.
