Dr Alam to speak on Stroke at Headway Conference

We are delighted to announce that Dr Sajid Alam will be a keynote speaker at our fourth Neuro Conference on Wednesday 17 October 2018 at Kesgrave Conference Centre, Twelve Acre Approach, Kesgrave.

Dr Alam is a consultant in stroke medicine at Ipswich Hospital and has a particular interest in the management of TIAs (transient ischaemic attacks or ‘mini-strokes’), hyper-acute strokes and the complex investigations often required after a stroke.

He graduated from The Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2004, a faculty of Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).

Dr Alam has triple accreditation for general internal medicine, geriatrics and stroke medicine.

His main speciality is medicine for the older person, and his sub-speciality expertise is in stroke medicine, particularly in cryptogenic and young stroke.

He will speak about strokes, TIAs and atrial fibrillation.

Dr Alam is the third speaker confirmed for the conference, joining world-renowned health expert Professor Robert Winston and Dr Hilda Hayo, Chief Admiral Nurse and CEO of Dementia UK.

We have attracted huge interest in our first three conferences, with author Dr Jane Hawking talking about her life as a family carer in 2017, famed scientist Prof Stephen Hawking making a rare public appearance to discuss his life with motor neurone disease in 2016, and local brain injury survivor Andrew Renton taking his first public steps in 21 years in 2015.

This year’s event promises to be another highlight in Suffolk’s calendar, with further eminent keynote speakers to be announced in due course to address guests on a broad range of subjects related to brain injury and neurological conditions in the healthcare sector.

Tickets are priced at £40 (plus booking fee) and are available from Eventbrite by clicking the button below:

Businesses and individuals alike took part in the cycling route, which consisted of 28 or 40 miles through Ipswich, Newbourne and Felixstowe, while others chose the new 10 mile walking route through the centre of Ipswich.

Among those taking part were teams from Seven Asset, Pound Gates, Orwell Trucks, Feathers Hair Salon Group and a team of six from Headway.

Approaching £4,000 has been raised this year so far, with £50,000 raised in the 10 years of our flagship fundraising event. Read more here.

London Marathon runners go the extra mile!

Our two amazing runners, Sue Vincent and Jo Fellowes, completed the hottest London Marathon on record on April 22 and raised almost £5,000!

Both admitted the heat, which reached 24.1C, put paid to their race plans, but they did incredibly well to finish with Sue in a time of 5 hours, 14 minutes and 52 seconds, and Jo in a time of 5 hours, 39 minutes and 33 seconds.

Sue raised £2,309.26, while Jo raised £2,488.33, which is going towards equipment and resources for our two monthly dementia groups in Ipswich.

Hope has been busy in the community raising awareness of how our Brainy Dogs project helps those with acquired brain injuries and neurological conditions. Here she is with pupils at Stone Lodge Academy in Ipswich.

Satellite & Dementia hubs update

Felixstowe Community Hospital is the new venue for our satellite hub service in Felixstowe on a Monday from June 4. The service helps users with their skills and cognitive abilities that may have been impaired as a result of their injury or condition through rehabilitation activities.

The link with the hospital will enable inpatients to access Headway’s support during their recovery and speed up discharge times, as well as reducing readmission.

We also provide a satellite hub service in in Haverhill at the Chalkstone Community Centre on a Wednesday, and in Woodbridge at the Deben Annexe, Woodbridge Community Hall, also on a Wednesday.

In addition, we provide monthly social support groups for adults with dementia and a carer, with a fish and chips lunch.

The group in Ipswich meets on the second Friday of the month at St Augustine's Church in Bucklesham Road, while a new group in Martlesham will meet from June 28 on the fourth Thursday of the month at St Michael's Church Centre, The Drift.

Help us win up to £4,000 by voting for Headway Suffolk throughout June at Tesco Haverhill in Cangle Road. Thank you!
